So this is my 3G, took it off the charger yesterday morning.

There was a fair amount of txting
A total of maybe 1 hour talk time
Wifi was set ON for about 8hours total doing a fetch every 15min
Location Services is off, and so is push and 3G
Took a few pictures also
Played the Ipod for about 5minutes and also played shoutcast for another 5 minutes.

Battery life good or bad?

Looks good to me. 5 hours usage is about the best you can expect (unless a large part was on wifi).

Depends on what you've done so far, but it does look like it, IMO. You should do a DFU restore, since they'll ask if you did that anyway, and that might improve things. All I know is I get that kind of usage daily and I'm on a 3G. Battery life does depend on lots of things though, most notably what kind of reception you have throug out the day (if your radios are constantly searching for a 3G or EDGE signal, then your battery will be sucked down). I posted a link on battery life above on other things to watch out for. Anyway, you shouldn't have to turn everything off to get normal battery life.

Edit: I thought I'd posted this above, but I can't find it. Here's the thread I referred to:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/525741/

Right, I want real world use, so my iPhone is always searching for 3G, edge, wi-fi, and push... and I've done restores in the past, so I dont know how effective they really are. I'm on wi-fi 98% of the time because I'm either at school, home, or at friend's homes with wi-fi so really the only time I'm on 3G is when im on the road or out in public areas without free wi-fi. To be honest, I'd rather be on wi-fi 24/7 until AT&T can truly deliver 7 mbps 3G or better because the faster the internet connection on the iphone, the better most apps (that use the net) will perform, even if it means it'll suck your battery a bit more. When your on an iPhone 3GS thats on a fast wi-fi network... the performance really shines! Any how, thanks for posting that thread and for the info, i"ll try another DFU restore

Here is mine. I keep everything on 24/7, email, 3G, location services, push email-contacts-calendar-bookmarks, notifications and WiFi. I can get double the usage time but that would reduce the standby to about 24 to 36 hours.

I just recently got my 3G S. It is my first iPhone ever.
My settings:
3G: on
wifi: off
push: off
fetch: off
brightness: 10%
location services: off

At 18% battery remaining I have:
USAGE: 4 hours 38 minutes
STANDBY: 11 hours 53 minutes

My usage consists of a lot emailing, a bit of safari, some quick messaging, a few phone calls, and about 30 min of 2D gaming. I have already gone through a few charges and I am thinking my battery isn't quite up to par. I was wondering if you guys think this kind of battery life warrants a replacement?

sounds about right

with my wife's iphone 3G i usually had around 3 hours of non-stop web surfing

My 3G gets about 5 hours of surfing a day and standby at least 16 hours, so I wouldn't be too happy if a 3GS wasn't better than that. Since it's your first iPhone a "restore as new" wouldn't help you, but you should try a DFU restore from backup for the hell of it. Also, I don't think you specifically say that you calibrated the battery, so let it die and recharge to 100 to make sure the meter is accurate. FYI, it may take awhile before you really know how your battery is going to be, so have patience. If after a few weeks you still aren't doing much better, you might want to have them do an analysis at the store.

if your back light is up all the way it will drain in hours however if it is down all the way it will last 2 days. i use the internet and fb all the time so i am constantly running on the 3g network which also drains battery. if you have blue-tooth on that will also lower battery life. so for best battery life use wifi (if u can) instead of 3g and turn back light all the way down and turn blue tooth off if you don't need it.

At 18% battery remaining I have:
USAGE: 4 hours 38 minutes
STANDBY: 11 hours 53 minutes

Have you calibrated your battery yet? If not, run it until the automatic shutoff and then charge to 100% + 1 hr before using. Until you've done that, I wouldn't rely to much on that battery percentage; it may be way off.

I drained it to about 5% and then charged it overnight the day I got it but perhaps that doesn't count as a complete calibration. I will also try a restore if that doesn't work. Thanks for the advice everyone!

iPhone 3GS

Wifi - on
3G on
Localization - off
Push - on
Auto Brightness - on and at about 60%

I think its poor :(, what do you guys think?

EDIT: Wifi was used dramatically through this time at home, maybe about 40 - 50 mins of calls and a 17 min podcast.

Seem normal to anyone?

100% charged
No sim, no wifi, no bluetooth, push, and pretty much EVERYTHING OFF
Auto dim mid brightness, volume at 1
1st Gen iPhone

About ~4 hours of Bookworm later (don't ask), I get the 20% battery left.

20% drain per hour while on a non-intensive game :mad:

Meh, not bad and not great. Have you calibrated? How long have you had it? Signal strength? So many factors to really know for sure. You could turn your brightness down to 50 (I know not a biggie, but every bit helps).

For a 1st gen, I'm not understanding why you expect much better. Games run batteries down, even on the 3G's. 5 hours on a 3G is about all I can get. Would you consider TapDefense an intensive game. That runs my battery down pretty quickly on my 3G.

Calibrate it? its totally died a couple of times last week and I've fully charged it?

Recorded a screen shot of usage at the same battery level, an improvement??

* location services – on
* bluetooth – off
* push email – off
* push notifications – on
* 3g – on when not around home/work uni
* wifi – on when around home/work/uni
* brightness – 40%
* autobrightness – on
* auto lock interval – 1 min
* mail polling – set to manual

Usage: 5ish hours (1hr Rope n Fly, 2hr iPod, 30min safari and rest is just screwing around opening closing System app).
Call duration: 13mins
Standby: 1 day 8 hours
Battery level: 20%

I'm connected with Virgin (Optus) and find it that its not always on 3g and roams back to 2g. Anyone with same carrier having same battery life? This is my 2nd iPhone 3GS, want to go back to apple for my 3rd but no available appointments. Battery life is miserable poor.

I've restored as new, ran it down to 0% 3 times left it to FULLY charge for 10 hours overnight. I'm running out of ideas......

After seeing this thread (and various others) a while back, i started taking random shots of my batter life to compare, though i've done them over a couple months, so can't remember extra configs each time, but i know roughly.

All on a 8 month old 3G 16gb.

As i work abroad 4 days a week, i mostly have location services off, data off, i never have 3G turned on (cant use it abroad and the signal is weak to non-existent where i live in the UK), i don't use it for calls much (as again, calls from abroad are extortionate & work landline is free) so i TXT alot instead, infact i try to keep calls short, sweet & to the point! I'm no a phone chatter :D Never have push on (no need) and brightness is always on 50%, auto bright on, auto lock 5 mins (which i rarely leave to anyway). I never turn the phone off at night (use the alarm every day) and only turn it off for take-offs & landings.

SO..

This one would have been traveling from work to home.
B/T = off untill i got home the next day, needed for the car
Wifi = mostly off
Briefly checking mail & app store before i leave work, about 4/5 hours of iPod use, with a few games of Harbour master and paper toss, txting, some video podcasts, a couple of short calls.

IMG_0343.png

This one was from a w/end at work, had to work over, but didn't use wifi much, quite a bit of iPod, ALOT of TXTing, tbh the thing was lit up most of the evening/ Checking the app store, some surfing etc. No video. No calls. This was the w/end before the short above.

IMG_0341.png

The last 3 are just average weeks at work & travel. I'll charge the phone before i leave Sunday @ 4pm and will re-charge regardless of where it's at (hence why the bar is still green in some) on Wednesday evening, circa 10pm.
Settings/ use just similar to the previous.

about a month later..

tbh i'm very happy with my battery, i've not yet been in the situation where i've been desperate for power, does me fine. I find myself really only needing to charge twice a week, which is no worse than my old simple nokias.

I will say i do drain it heavily at the weekends, where i will have Wifi, location, B/T etc on all the time, when the B/T is connected in the car that drains it bad, and now i've got apps like CoPilot, i can easily drain the battery out in a day or so, so i know it's not perfect, lol;)

Latest run since yestermorning or saturday late night (i think)

Push contacts and calendar
Push notifications
Mail set to 1hr auto fetch (4 accounts)
Location services on
3G & Wi-Fi on
BT off
Brightness 45%

Phone use:

About 7 texts
4hr 21m duration 3G call
About 1hr data use (Safari, Stocks, Weather, App store, iTunes Youtube)
About 40m of iPod use

Here's what i get...make of it what you will.

Apple should've followed in Nokia's footstep and put a 1500mAh battery in this thing

Is it normal if my battery is below 40% and it has only been through 10 hours of standby and almost no usage? Time to take it in?
