3.1.2 on my 3G absolutely awesome with push notifications, push mobileme, wifi...

5.5hrs of usage (bit of everything), 30% remaining.

Died at 7+hrs of usage.

With minimal usage could easily last up to 3 days before charging.

Battery is now 1 year old.

My 3GS on 3.1.2 with the exact same settings absolutely sucks.

10% depletion surfing on wifi for about 15min.

4hrs max usage before it's dead.

Battery life has dropped big time with the 3.1.2 update, i think the usages stats are going up during sleep time as well!

I rarely follow cellphone technology after my June 2007 but...

BlackBerry Storm™ 9500

Standby time: 15 days (356 hours)
Talk Time: 6 hours
Battery: 1400 mAhr removable/rechargeable cryptographic Lithium cell

What the hell is Apple doing?!

Is this actual usage times that you recorded or the specs? Apple claims 300 hours as well....

Genius Swapped My 3GS

After DFU install as New iPhone I got 8 hours of Standby 5 hours of Usage. I was upset as my girlfriends 3G get 3x that.

I was polite and had saved some images from this thread.

I made an appt at the Genius bar for tomorrow evening. I have always thought my battery life has been mediocre. Now i see some outstanding results in this thread. I have a 3GS running 3.1.2: Should I continue with the appointment or does this usage seem fine? It generally fluctuates between these results and about 4 hours usage with 9 hours standby before hitting 10%. These are the same results I have had before jailbreaking so that has not had an effect.

I'm actually getting very similar results on my 3G running 3.1.2. I'm heading to the Apple store tonight to see if there's anything they can do about it.

Depends on what you do on the phone. If you are using 3G data, for the most part, 4 hours is pretty good for usage. Some of these phones with outstanding usage is mostly listening to music for hours.

This is fairly typical now...

This is consistent with my current experience except WiFi On and Bluetooth On.

Things have improved with the new iPhone OS - my usage is still much the same:

I used to get longer - maybe charge every two days - but I use the phone for data a lot more now and I hear 3.1 does bad things to your battery...

3GS 16Gb 3.1
Brightness Auto 25%
3G 2 Hours
WiFi Off
Bluetooth Off
Location Services On
Notifications On (multiple apps)
Push On (multiple accounts)
Fetch 15 Minutes (multiple accounts)
iPod 2 Hours
Calls 45 Minutes
Frequent use of apps for navigation, route planning, social networking

I am quite happy with having to charge every day, though on very long days I come close to it shutting itself down.

But now I never really run dry - which is a good thing. I guess the new OS makes the difference? The other explanation is more iPod time - I think both counters go up if you are listening to music, artificially inflating the total time...

I agree

Depends on what you do on the phone. If you are using 3G data, for the most part, 4 hours is pretty good for usage. Some of these phones with outstanding usage is mostly listening to music for hours.

I post my typical days - but playing a game will kill 20% in about an hour, surfing on 3G aimlessly for an hour will do the same. The only reason my battery lasts how it does is the phone is just sitting there most of the time. And as I suspect (post above), listening to music makes both counters go up, so adding them may not be accurate.

Having said that, I used to have a 3G handset - K800i - that only needed a charge every three days or so, and I used the internet on that quite a bit, played games, camera with flash and so on. I think the iPhone, for whatever reason - maybe that awesome screen - uses up more juice.

Though if there is any concern about the phone, taking it to the Genius Bar won't hurt - there might actually be something up with it.

I get about 8 Hours 30 usage with mine/ 1 day 6 hours standby on my iPhone 3GS 3.0.1 before it's at 10%. 4 Hours of 3G surfing whilst commuting to college/at college etc mostly involves listening to youtube vids, surfing forums, downloading a few apps etc. iPod is always on whislt 3G is on as 3g is on whilst im commuting, revising, doing essays etc

At this point its about 50% - 60%

Then at home I put on the WiFi, get around another 4 - 5 hours usage, at this point though it's never off, always surfing, listening to iPod, texting ALOT, few calls, throughout the day I go through around 40-50 mins of calls.

Other settings: Brightness at 50%/Push ON (I get around 2 - 3 emails an hour, mostly junk from jobsites:rolleyes:, still an annoyance to delete!)/vibrate on/Bluetooth never on cant send anything to other people with other phones.

My battery life has gone up since I got it, it's about a month old. I had AppleCare deliver me a box so they could send out a new one a week ago but the battery life has improved, I haven't tried going to 3.1.2 as I've heard it worsens it.

stop complaining... most smart phones have to be charged everyday.... its called having high power parts to make them awesome

My 3GS had excellent battery life until 3.1.2 came along. I am currently having about half the battery life I had before the update. I use to go to bed with more than 50% battery life left. Now it hits the the point where it has to auto shutdown every day.

Something in the update is terribly wrong.

General question. From your experience what is the life cycle like of iPhone batteries? I am on a 3GS 32gig. I have had it since end of Sept and just wondering if I should expect to need it replaced within a year.

After recalibrating my battery post-3.1.2 upgrade, it definitely looks like battery life has improved. There isn't much usage yet but my battery life used to decrease quite a bit faster on standby than it is now. Here's what I've got so far:

iPhoneUpload-32.jpg

I'll run it down to 5% or so and see how much I can milk out of this charge.

ETA: Usage was basically all calls with maybe 5 mins of checking email and texting. Location services on, 3G on, brightness set to probably 75%. No iPod usage at all, though that's about to change as I'm headed to the gym.

You've certainly turned your iPhone into a full-time hobby. Good to know JB isn't affected battery life.

this is an average day for me, played loads of games surfed the web and had some music on

I used to get pretty decent battery life (~4.5 hours of usage, ~18+ standby) but lately it's been much, much worse.

Anyone? Also, has anybody experienced the usage information disappearing from their settings? Whenever I check mine it is blank.

If you plug in or respring/restart your phone at all during a power cycle it goes blank until you recharge to 100%.

Here's mine (jailbroken 3GS). Not sure if it's good or not but it seems to be worse since my upgrade to 3.1.2.
