I just picked this up today from work. Well, it actually came in today, I ordered it a week ago. I am a techy, and it seemed like a pretty cool tool to use when it comes to music, video/photo editing, etc. Anyone have any opinions on it, use it on a daily basis, etc.?

I've had a bunch of people recommend this to me for FCP editing, but it seems like it'd be slower moving my hands between that and the keyboard, when I could just use the J/K/L scrubbing shortcuts and keep my hand in one place. Let us know what you think...

*edit*
I thought this was a different product, so the above isn't really as relevant...my bad, it's been a long day.

Are you kidding me? What is there appealing about that product? I'm not trying to be a d*ck, I just want to know... why?

I agree.

Without a proper OS and expandability (USB port, card reader) the iPad is just an oversized iPhone. Oh, I can't download my camera's photos onto it? Oh, if someone has a USB key with some document I need, I can't get it unless they email it to me, then I go to find a Wifi hotspot to download it? Look, not everyone carries a bloody computer with them. The funny thing is, even if the other person has an iPad, the only way to transfer files directly between them is Bluetooth; and I'm not even sure if it can even do THAT.

It's just pretty, really. It has very little functionality. If you want to read, get a Kindle. If you want to browse the web, keep your iPhone and notebook/netbook. If you want to look cool, get an iPad.

Majority of people don't care about OS and expandability. This is a mass market device, not for geeks. My mother wouldn't understand crap about PC/Macs but she can work with my iPhone just fine without any issues. Some people just want a device that works, iPad would be perfect for them. If done properly, iPads will be a very low maintaince devices perfect for those type of people.

Not to mention there are more people who don't have iphones or netbooks/iphones. Those would be fine for them as well since they might not want the small screen that iPod touch has.

I have the next one up - the Space Explorer with palm rest and buttons. I do 3d CAD work on it all day and it is excellent. Haven't tried it for anything other than CAD but I know I would struggle to go back to doing 3d assemblies without it now.

Is that the Augusta Tricked Out? I love the colour. =] I also love the fork, even though it's not straight-blade.

What else are you gonna throw on there?

Hopefully my build will be done by spring too. I still need to find a good deal on some RB-021s and a new stem. I've got some other stuff lying around I can build it up with.

Yeah its the Augusta, thought I'd give Tommaso a try.

I'm going to try not to skimp on parts on this build. Miche Advanced crank, H+Son wheels (eventually), and I also want the RB-021s.

I use one pretty much daily for 3D CAD. They are absolutely amazing. The only problem with them is that you get so used to them that you forget how to use a computer without one, so showing anybody else something on their own computer is terrible.

I use one for modeling home theaters and their acoustic environment in Sketchup. I increased productivity by about 50% with it. I feel lost and clumsy without it.

Is that why it's so cheap?

Exactly. For instance, the mass market still wants space, and a maximum of 64GB for $699 USD (or $829 USD with 3G) proves otherwise. This product wasn't made with the mass market in mind. This product was the brain child of one thought, "How can we make more money by giving people even less?"

I've been a Mac user and loyal fan for years, but this just proves Apple is out of it.

the iPad is just simply a $500 status symbol. Now can we get back to the purchases?

Well I dont do that type of work, or 3D renderings either, so is it useful for stuff like iTunes, Adobe, and just basic Mac stuff as well? I havent tried it yet because I havent received my 27 incher yet, but I am curious to know what it does.

I ordered the SSD macbook air this morning. I bought the air when it first came out but it was too slow and sold on eBay after a couple months. I needed a very portable computer and when this model came out a while back I thought it would be perfect. Then came all the tablet talk so I figured I would wait and see if it was something revolutionary before I got the air. Well, it wasn't revolutionary so I ordered the air. I will still probably get the iPad when it comes out as it will make a great nightstand/living room device but I need a semi-powerful ultraportable which is not what the iPad is.

Hahah, a $500 computer is a status symbol? I think not. I can see plenty of college kids who simply want internet and iWork getting this affordable alternative to a MacBook. And then plenty others who buy it for fun, but it certainly isn't a status symbol. People buy netbooks for fun. Are they a status symbol?

I would get the iPad based mainly on what potential applications and accessories it can bring to the table. I would like to use it to:

Put my post processed pictures on
MLB application (big fan of my team and I can't watch them on tv from my location.)
I also design, so the potential of being able to do my designs and put them in a viewer on the tablet is a great for me.

It still has two months, more information will be available then. Until then though, it has my interest.

Not really. The top half doesn't spin freely, it just rotates slightly in either direction. It's meant for 3D work of any sort, and that is what it excels at. I can't see how one would use it for any of the Adobe software, and I definitely can't see where it would work for iTunes.

One thing I wish it could do that it can't is pan through large spreadsheets, instead of scrolling up/down/left/right with the mouse.

Macs have become that way. Been in a Starbucks lately?
Really? I hardly think of someone having a higher status than another person just by owning a Mac. Go out and do something worthwhile and then maybe claim your status title.

Macs are so common that they aren't nearly a status symbol. Starbucks isn't cheap, but I don't envy anyone drinking it. Same with Macs. Plus, I was talking about the iPad in relation to other Macs, not Macs in general. If anything, the MacBook Air would be the status symbol since you get the least bang for your buck.
