Sorry, but that sounds like a terrible alternative to the Pentax K-x.

First, there's no need to upgrade the K-x kit lens. Second, you can get a Pentax M42 50mm f/1.4 prime for $70. Third, it's more versatile and not at all limiting. Fourth, it outperforms Canon and Nikon in low-light (high ISO). It even outperforms its big brother, the K-7, in high ISO, which is a big deal. Fifth, it runs great on the AA batteries that are widely available. Plus, it's lightweight and compact, as are the Pentax lenses. And of course, it has fantastic image quality.

I've also heard from many that Pentax is easier to learn on than Nikon. I'd have to agree from using my friend's D300 and D200, among cheaper Nikons.

I have no knowledge about Pentax but i know that the best of the best comes from Canon and Nikon. You can search Flickr for some photos and compare maybe..
At the end of the day what really matters is your skills of taking photos, iv'e seen people get fantastic looking shots using just a Nikon D40 and stock lens and seen people using a D300 and take crappy shots.

Anyway thats not what this threads for the person that asked the original question - Pentax camera's are good no doubt about it, you'll be happy with any. Me, I used pentax film and now Canon digital with some lenses from my dads old film canon setup. I prefer canon because of the feel and just went for it, their all good, I got my 400d for £230 delivered with 8gb sandisk card so I'm very happy and got some great shots with it. Just go with what you can get and itll be good im sure. just research the options with it though for future upgrades. any kit lenses will be fine, but if you want a aperture of like 1.8 get a 50mm 1.8 for cheap anyway. good luck.

...yet you just said you don't know anything about Pentax. I certainly don't know what the best camera in the world is. In fact, if I had to guess, I'd say it's a Nikon (out of the three). However, it's neither here nor there as we're talking about entry-level dslr's.

Pentax is unknown to many people. I know I knew nothing about them before I came across the K-x a month ago. I even have a bias towards Nikon. But there's a reason the K-x has introduced Pentax to many a new photographer, and it isn't the colors. It's revolutionized the entry-level DSLR... it's as simple as that.

It even won the TIPA award for Best Entry Level DSLR.

Photographer > lens > camera body

We can all agree there!

Because when you spend 5k off some loner who found the phone and millions want to see it with ad revenues they probably made 40k so far :cool:

A) that dude is not from Gizmodo.
B) Whatever Gizmodo "earned" from this is going back to the lawyers now.

:(

I was turning into my neighborhood in my 2006 Grand Prix when the tires chirped, and my car immediately started making a loud "whining noise" that got worse when I turned.

Funny, some of you might recall I bought that Alienware computer a few days ago. It never, ever fails.

I bought my Macbook is summer 2006 - Alternator went out three days later
iPhone in June 2007 - Starter goes out the next day
iMac in September 2008 - Brake calipers lock up same week
And now Alienware in April 2010 - car problems 2 days later

 ! I think it's a sign I shouldn't be buying big purchase electronics.

I'm *praying* it's just a power steering pump, and I can get away for a couple hundred dollars. Cause I really, *really* don't have much more than that right now.

Free Super Saver shipping or Free Amazon Prime shipping? Don't know about the Free Amazon Prime shipping but I've seen the Free Super Saver shipping take a week to process the order before it even shipped. Good Luck!

On my 2nd one. The 1st broke the little metal tab on the back when taking it out of the package. Store in Tampa (was on business trip) was awesome in swapping it out for another.

I'll need a few days to retrain my hand for this since it's so small. The lack of a substantial arch is quite a change.

Funny you ask, I cancelled my order and payed for shipping. I realized the Amazon scam, "Dont pay for shipping, we wont ship your order for a week". That is the ONE thing I hate about amazon.

Whenever I choose Free Super Saver shipping, I typically get my shipment in around 3-4 days from my order date. The longest I've ever waited was until Friday from an order I placed on a Sunday night.

Hell, I've ordered stuff and it's arrived 2 days later with FSSS.

When I ordered my MBP from Amazon with FSSS, I believe I only waited 3-4 days (ordered it on a Thursday, got it on the Monday). I was in the middle of midterms when I ordered it, and it arrived just after I finished my last one Perfect.
