Not necessarily, as you can find decent portable amps for less than $100 (CMOY, Pimeta, etc.)its going to be three digits, if not more.

kinda expensive ...
looks nice. there are only a few using pens anymore, but i like the writing with it, so im with youI just received this via FedEx.
Never said CMOY was a good amp, but it is the starting range for headphone amps and is better than nothing. Plus the HD595 is a low impedance headphone so it doesn't necessarily need an amp.i hardly count cmoy as a good amp. plus its a full sized headphone, which means if he goes for a portable, the least he should do is nuforce icon or a fiio e7. both of which run at or around the 80-100 mark.

Bought BF:BC2 from Gamefly and received it today. Really liking it so far.
Okay if you want to get into specifics, in my opinion the sound quality of the HD595 doesn't change/improve too dramatically unless you spend upwards of $300 for a nice solid state or tube amp. Anything less than that to me isn't worth it especially when theres very little change to the already forward sounding 595's. You're much better off ripping your music with FLAC or using LAME MP3 and ensure that your source is high in quality. Garbage in = garbage out.yeah, and so is the AKG K701..
Any of those are fine, but I would personally recommend you to head over to Head-Fi.org and read up on all the possibilities. You'll find much better answers there, but I warn you it's not for the faint of heart. NuForce Icon Mobile
or
USB DAC Headphone Amplifier E7
I take it that the DAC has to be connected to my iPhone via the USB cable? Then I connect my headphones to the AMP? That seems like an awful lot of stuff to carry around. But if the ipod adapter is extra for the NuForce, I'll go with the DAC. It depends on the advice/opinions I get here though, because I have no clue about these things.
I do love Fringe!
