I have an early 2011 MPB, with the stock 4GB of RAM. I just downloaded the new iSTAT Menu 4, which sits on my Menu Bar, and noticed that even with my relatively light use, I was using about 95% of Memory, and with just 1 day, 10 hours of uptime, I had 288,000 of page outs...so I figured some more RAM was needed.

I bought 16GB of RAM and a tool kit. My MBP is much happier now.

I'm considering going to 16 - though have 8 already so may not make as dramatic a difference, but I definitely notice some slowdown when using Photoshop with multiple layers.

How is it - the early 2011 model is still a really fast machine (I have the 2.2 model), so I'm sure more RAM would make it even better.

As you point out, I'm not sure going from 8GB to 16GB will be as noticeable as my going from 4GB to 16GB. You are doing heavier stuff than me, so it will probably make a difference for you, too.

I find everything is smoother with the RAM upgrade...no lags or momentary freeze ups when loading a page or an app, no beach balls...all much smoother, and therefore, faster. Not wildly faster..but certainly noticeable.

Also, with the 4GB, with only, say, Mail app and Safari open, I was using pretty much 100% memory, and with just about 1 1/2 days of uptime, I had 288,000+ page outs. Now...zero page outs.

I don't know if this is related (since my technical knowledge is...er...limited, to say the most), but it seems that my wake-from-sleep time, and re-boot time, is quicker. Possibly just my misperception...but it does seem so.

Wake from sleep may be due to OS X having more space in the RAM to cache items, meaning it doesn't take as long for them to load. I'm not 100% sure though, but it sounds like a reasonable explanation :p

I have about 8GBs of Page outs vs 25GB page ins after 10 days uptime. Sounds a lot worse than it feels to be honest, only time I notice is when I have a few big apps open. Also working on a video project and had FCP, Motion, Illustrator and Photoshop all open at the same time, I'm sure that can't be good... :p

That explanation works for me, but you could have told me the Wake Up Fairy was doing it, and I would have bought that, too.:p

From what little I know (trust me..."little" is an overstatement)...it sounds like upgrading your RAM would be a good idea.

As my grandmother would say...it couldn't hoit, boychik!

I just ordered this laptop lap tray. I have a Logitech lap tray, which is very solid and comfortable, but the tray surface s so smooth that the MBP slides down the tray all the time when I'm seated in a chair. I'm sure some sort of jury rig fix could be applied to keep the computer from sliding, but for aesthetic reasons I prefer not to do that. (Fussy old putz, ain't I? :p)The laptop tray below, although less solid (according to the Amazon reviews), does have a bar at the bottom to keep the computer from sliding down, and it shaped so the vents are totally exposed, improving air flow and keeping the computer cooler. It's also quite inexpensive.

That looks really neat. I'm going to add it to my Amazon Wish List and await your personal review of it.

Probably should have bought this during the Steam summer sale, but totally dropped the ball on that one. Mainly because I just found out about this game. I played the demo and discovered I'm terrible at it, so these little Kerbalnauts have no idea what disasters are in store for them, lol.

The corners cracked on my last one, but I liked it so much that I wanted another one. Saw it as a chance to try a new color (old one was grey). Plus, it did take a couple tumbles so I wasn't surprised it cracked.

Devicewear Union rear shell in dark blue for my iPad 3.

I am told it came from a 2004 330 of some sort and it has 97,000 miles on it. It will come with a 12 month warranty that hopefully doesn't have any exclusions for track use.

Of course it's not going to be warrantied for track use, why would it be? Not like anyone would ever know though.

Personally if you are spending that much money already , given the mileage I would just go ahead and do a rebuild on it while it's sitting right there. Even if the engines are known to go much longer, 100k miles is 100k miles and the engine could benefit from a rebuild.

To the best of my knowledge it does have any damage to it that new internals and a crap load of labor wouldn't solve. Of course the cost would go way up - this used engine costs $2800. A remanufactured engine would have cost $8000 for the engine alone. We checked. This car isn't worth that sort of investment.

edit: the value of the car post repair will exceed its current value (not much, since it's not running) plus the cost of the repair. Other options won't be that favorable. The route I am taking replaces a 120k mile engine with a 97k engine with some track prep done to it, and will deal with some major maintenance items as long as the engine is out of the car. That's about as good an outcome as I can expect under the circumstances.

Don't worry about the value of the car. Enjoy it how you want and for what it is, BMWs last good 3 series. (IMO) VERY few cars are good financial investments, but it IS good to invest a little into what makes you happy.

It's a Topeak Ride Case. Here's a link to the one for the iPhone 5:

http://amzn.com/B00B139YUW

I just purchased it after seeing that post as well. The one in the picture in the link looks slightly different than the one I got, though. The only difference is that the case that goes on the phone goes all the way around, whereas, in the picture, it shows the silver sides of the phone.

It's a pretty good mount though.

The only problem I had with it was the hole for the headphone jack is tiny. I had to file the hole to make it bigger to fit my headphones in it and they rubbery part around the jack is one of the smallest I have seen. I even went to Radio Shack to get an adapter and they were all too big.

You can get a file for like $5 at the hardware store (if you don't already have one) and make it bigger, though.

Oh, I'm not, and this doesn't effect the value of the car at all (but it sure is doing a number on my bank balance). If anything the value might increase slightly because the only thing that may need doing to the car after this repair is replacing the radiator, assuming I don't go ahead and do that. My 3er is ridiculously clean for a car that actually gets driven.
