Ah, yes. The 1-3 cup model, or the 1-5 cup model. That has been one of my dilemmas, too.

No, I've not read a bad review about the company or its products, either, and I will be fascinated to read how you find it, as I am seriously debating ordering one when I am next home.

Made my 3rd lot of rice today, I put slightly less water in than the instructions suggest, bringing the water level slightly under the mark in the pan, and the rice turned out perfect for me, being lovely and dry, & not stuck together at all, just lovely.

As for the which size to buy, if I was buying again I would probably go for the smaller 1-3 cup model as each cup of rice swells to twice the size, turning one cup of rice into just about enough for two people. Three cups would perhaps be enough for maybe five servings.

Its the NS-TSQ10 which is the 1-5 cup size model. Wasn't sure whether to buy the smaller 1=3 cup size model as there are only three of us. but chose the larger one in the end.

Its an awful lot of money simply to cook rice, but I get inconsistent results with the traditional method and I've not read a bad review about this brand.

Bought it from this UK supplier..

My wife just bought the NS-TSC10 just a few weeks back. So far it's been great.

Got a 2012 13" MacBook Pro for next to nothing! Rescued it from my local recycling center. 2.5 GHz Core i5, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD!

Great budget set for what you get. I have had mine on my patio for over a year and its been amazing.
I bought one of these for my hotel room on my last business trip. The maid wasn't sure what was going on but 6 weeks is to long to be stuck with a 27 inch lol. Ended up passing it along to the office out on Maui as a thank you

Pretty good picture for the money. HDR content looked great. Very impressed for the $350 I paid for it.

If I was on a budget I would look no further

I eat rice almost daily.

My ratios are

Brown: 1 part rice 1.5 parts water

Basmati, or Jasmine: 1 part rice 1.25 water

White: 1 part rice 1 part water

My old Asian roommates would do just one inch of water above the rice for everything and it came out very well somehow.

Also don't forget to wash your rice. It comes out markedly better without the scum.

I measure mine out and place it in a tight weave mesh collander. Then I fill a large sauce pot with just enough cold water to submege the rice. Then just shake the rice around for 30 seconds and it will take all the starch off.

When I am next home, I shall definitely order one of these; thanks for sharing these stories. My mother is elderly and has advanced Alzheimer's, and we have had a live-in carer for over five years - a wonderful nurse who is Filipina; the carer has a rice cooker, but a basic one, and - as daily rice comes close to being her religion - I would like to get her a better model.

Which specific models - within the 1-3 cups range - (or 3-5 cups range) would you recommend? How do the models differ from one another?

I think there is little difference, other than capacity. Some, like mine, have a steam feature for making cakes and porridge, but I haven tried that yet. The 1-3 cup model I was going to order was the NS-LAQ05. By going for the larger one then your covered if her you want to cook for more people, my larger model cooks one cup of rice just as well as it would five cups. I still don't know if I made the right choice in size, but theres no way I'm parting with mine now :D

Ive just made some pilau rice by boiling a small amount of water in a pan, adding cumin seeds, clove, cardamon pods, turmeric and a bay leaf. Simmered for 5 mins then sieved. Add 1 cup of basmati rice to the rice cooker, add the spiced water and turned the cooker on. 1hr later the rice was perfect...

Thanks for your reply - very much appreciated.

Ah, you used the water, rather than leaving the spices with the water when the latter was added to the rice in the rice cooker? Fantastic - that sounds delicious (and pretty easy).

My wife is Japanese and is religious about her rice as well. Most of the time it's just regular white rice, but she has several other types she cooks or adds packages of "things" to it. (spices or other vegetables).

If it's going to be one or two people, the smallest capacity cookers are probably perfect.

We just cook our rice in a glass bowl. 10 minutes in the microwave. Water one inch above. Rinse well in boiling water.
Works every time.

We don't have a microwave, and - on something as important as rice, especially when you live with someone for whom rice is a fundamental part of their culinary identity, it is important to get it right - the one condition the carer set - or plea she made - when she came to live and work with us over five years ago - was that she be allowed to bring and use a rice cooker.

That's fine until you have real quality rice in a good rice cooker, then you will never do that again.

Agreed. With something like that, do it properly.

Nice! If you don't mind me asking, whats the estimated wait time? I've just been quoted 6-12 months for a no-date Sub :/

I was told that it was unavailable initially by an AD at HK where I was on vacation but I got lucky at Singapore's new Terminal 4 Airport. There was a polar and a black Explorer 2 available.
