I really need to get some sunglasses. My Wayfairer's died years ago. The other (cheap) glasses I keep in the car are very scratched up now.

I like Maui Jim very much.

........

Today's delivery to my doorstep (from the ever great Mr. Bezos) was a 12" French carbon steel skillet. I've wanted one of these for quite some time and Amazon put them on sale at 25% off, so I jumped on it. It is one heavy ass pan! Now to season it and get to cooking!

(It's still on sale! Quite a good deal for a 12.6 inch pan).
Here it is, if you're interested.

Looks fantastic.

Well wear and let us know how you get on with it.

How do you like it?

I liked the 12 so much I picked up the 8 and 10 too. Thank you for the recommendation.

Ah, now I'm envious.

Again, looks amazing, and well wear.

I take it that these pans need seasoning; how do you guys go about doing that?

I'm returning the Sony 2-ch receiver. It constantly goes into 'protect mode' and I can't figure out why. It has clean power, all new wiring and properly connected and the impedance is properly matched to the speakers. Even at a volume where music can just barely be heard, it will randomly shut off. It's not overheating by any means either. So, back it goes.

I ordered this to replace it.

Indeed. It's even worse this evening after I returned home from a day trip to buy records. Now it will turn on and go right to protect mode. I disconnected everything, the speakers, the CD player, and the turntable and it still shuts itself down.

Very disappointed in this Sony receiver.

So I can't even play the records I bought today until Tuesday when the Yamaha comes in.

So far so good. The Yamaha arrived about 30 minutes ago and I've put a couple of records on and tuned in a few FM stations and so far no issues at all.

That Sony must have been a defective unit. It actually went into protect mode the very first time I turned it on and progressively got worse over the following 7 days.

I've never had a Yamaha before; never had anything against them either. Back when I was a teenager I had a very nice Pioneer component setup that served me well for a long time. I have no idea what I ever did with it once I joined the Marines because it's long gone now. I imagine I must have sold it once I enlisted.

But, anyway, this new Yamaha sounds great and it working wonderfully so far.

Frustrating tale, and the very best of luck and enjoyment with the Yamaha.

I've been so busy that I haven't even had time to season it, yet. Hopefully. I'll get to it this weekend. I've used them professionally in restaurants, but never had one this bleedin' heavy. Can't wait to drop something in it!

Let me know how you get on with it - I hope you enjoy it - and I would greatly welcome advice on how to season such pans.

Added some more cooking implements to my arsenal. Needed some top tier pie pans so I finally broke down and got them. And no-one locally had powdered buttermilk that wasn't a melange of other ingredients. Amazon is my go to. And this morning I ordered some new quarter sheet pans and some pro grade cake pans for my wife. We needed to replace some aged ones with better quality. Also got a new "non-stick" pan from Germany to replace an old Anolon pan I had worn out.

(These pie pans are beautifully heavy! I cannot wait to use them!)

Picked up an Apple Watch Series 4 Stainless Steel with Apple Care Plus for $450 on Offer Up. Sold my series 3 stainless steel for $250. It’s definitely worth the $200 difference

My wife got one a couple of weeks ago. She didn't like wearing anything on her wrists, but she really likes her Apple Watch.

I did a thing.

And now the newly redesigned iMac will launch next week.

Most recent large purchase was a Garmin Forerunner 245. Decided to take physical fitness a priority again as I inch closer to 40.

Had it for a few weeks, running on the elliptical for 6-8 miles a day, 45 minutes or so. Actually started this to catch up on Game of Thrones, started with Episode 1 of Season 1. Now up to Episode 4 of Season 3. Watching one episode a night, already down 9 lbs so far. Hopefully by the time I’m finished with the show I’ll be -25 lbs.

With the new Mac Pro out of my price range, I've finally done something about my storage requirements and have bought a NAS. I'll finally be moving away from "ageing computer tower crammed full of drives" and going to "box full of drives in another room".

Very nice.

Last year I built my own FreeNAS server and its been treating me very well.

You'll enjoy the Synology and their software. I've been using two at work with almost 140TB and they've been ultra reliable. We did have a hard ware issue on one and Synology shipped a new box, let us transfer the drives over and then mail the old one back. One thing I always suggest doing is to turn on the recycle bin on your share drives in the Synology settings. Just so you don't accidentally delete something and it's gone forever unlike deleting it on your computer hard drive.

I haven't even unboxed it yet, but I'm looking forward to giving it a go! It's good to see support for Time Machine, iTunes home sharing, and so on. It even has a VPN server so I suppose in a pinch I could get at my movies etc. from the other side of the world if I wanted to!
