Moved a Mac mini to my office... a rather spartan setup, but one that works quite well.

B&H Photo is blowing out new 2014 2.8ghz/8gb/1tb fusion Mini's for $529, so I just got one to replace the three-year-old 2014 base mini that I use for an iTunes server. I split the internal 128gb ssd from the fusion drive and use it as a startup disk - it clocks about 760mb/sec read and 700mb/sec write, takes about 20 seconds to boot. Very happy with how this is working out - it has a 128gb ssd and 8gb RAM just like a base 2018 Mini, with the 1tb internal hard drive as a bonus. My media is on a 4tb USB 3 hard drive, plus two additional USB drives that I rotate for nightly backups with Carbon Copy. Everything is also continuously backed up to the cloud with BackBlaze.

Of course, the RAM can't be upgraded on the 2014 Mini, and it's not as fast as the base 2018 Mini. But it's more than adequate for a media server and five hundred bucks for a new Mac ain't bad! :D

Mac Mini Core i7, 32GBs of RAM, 256GB

Most recent addition: OWC Express 4M2. Allows me to add up to four NVME M.2 SSD's and
because it's thunderbolt 3, I get the same speeds as the internal SSD. Works seamlessly and starts up automatically when my Mac boots. What's also neat is that I can simply daisy-chain my LG Ultrafine to it so I only have to connect 1 TB3 Cable to my Mac mini. :)

Works fine with a bit of remapping of the windows and alt keys.
Good to know. I have one too that I love (connected to my Surface Book 2). But for some reason I remember reading that it wouldn’t connect to a Mac. I’m not worried about the alt/win keys since it would be the same for any Windows keyboard on a Mac.

I do the same and also have it paired to a Surface Book 2.

No issues connecting to the Mac mini 2018. It just paired like any other Bluetooth device.

My "portable" Mac mini setup:View attachment 841463

It looks like the Mini wrapped in a leather case for protection when traveling - is it?

i3/8/128 is it slow for surfing net, watching 1080p movies, bit of ms office?

Not really - it's powerful enough for all that. I'd bump the RAM to 16gb if it were me. As for storage - the 128GB will likely get full after a bit, but you can a thunderbolt external SSD really easily, and wait until you need to.

What's the black box on top of your mini?

2018 Mac Mini with Asus XG Station Pro and Sapphire Vega 56 eGpu
Asus PB278 1440p Monitor
500 GB USB-C SSD sitting on top the Mini for Final Cut projects
Velocifire M87 Mac Mechanical Keyboard (awesome Mac specific mech keyboard)
Aokeo USB Audio Interface
JBL LSR305 Studio Monitors
Sennheiser e835 Mic on Rode PSA1 boom arm
Ikea gray Alex drawers with 74 inch walnut Karlby countertop on top
Love the look of this. Going for a similar setup and just trying to decide on the eGPU enclosure. How do you find that Asus XG Station Pro? Going to put a GTX 1080 FE in an eGPU exclusively for Windows gaming and the ASUS is looking like the one to go for, if I can find one in the UK!

Mac Mini i7, 256 GB Hd, 16 GB Ram, Connected to Lan Via Ethernet
Logitech K780 Keyboard, connected via Bluetooth
Logitech MX Vertical Mouse, connected via Bluetooth
Samsung 40” 4K TV (UN40KU6300FXZA) as monitor and speakers
2 Samsung T5 External SSD's, connected via USB C

Note - To get the Logitech devices working smoothly over BT, I had to turn off WIFI on the Mac Mini. They worked fine with WIFI on via the Logitech Unifying dongle.

Hi everyone

My Mac Mini is the base model, i3 with 8gb of RAM and 128 of SSD.
I bought it very cheap, NEW at 550 € (40% OFF in my country), and it goes very well.
I have it with Magic Trackpad 2 and Razer Blackwidow, external 4TB HDD, Edifier 2.0 speakers and DELL Ultrasharp U2515H 2K Screen.

I am very happy with the Mac mini.

Moved the Mini from the indoors office to the man cave/pub shed. Nice working area in the evenings!

is that the new LG 4k ultrafine? How does it run on the Mac Mini?
Yeah it’s the new 23.7 ultra fine. Seems to run really well so far. Had to play around with the resolution settings for a few minutes but working well now. Have the 5K ultrafine indoora which I also connect the mini to which also works well. Have 2 sets of the Apple keyboard & mouse so I can simply unplug the mini and move between rooms.

Finally got around updating my studio desk :) started out as an idea to improve my ergonomics but what's also neat is that I can simply tuck away my Midi Keyboard when I don't use it.
