Hi, I like your setup, very clean...and I figured you lived in Europe, I recognize the heater haha typical "old style" European. I was wondering, did you get the laptop stand in Italy or did you order it from the US?

Thanks

You have an eight-core Mac Pro and 3x 30" displays for... photo editing? I dunno, just seems a bit excessive to me, considering I can edit video with my 2007 MBP on my single 28" display (albeit non-professional editing).

And what exactly is "hardcore multitasking?" Is that when you open every app on your computer or something? When would you need to do something like that?

Sorry to sound so critical

What would be an appropriate use for three 30" monitors? Not many people could use all of that space all of the time, I know I don't. I worked to build that setup over time (as you saw), but I never said it was necessary. Sure, I could work on much less, but I would rather be using my setup ...who wouldn't?

Once you accustom to that much real-estate, it's very hard to go back. You "grow into" the setup over time, and I find myself using most of the space at any given moment for something, wether it be work or leisure.

Extravagance isn't "needed," but it is nice for those who can afford it. :D
I may be 17, but all of that equipment was paid for with my (hard-earned) money, not my parents'.

thank you, you're a good observer :p

Anyway, I've found it in a local store and it was an incredible deal: I've paid 50€ for it, while the suggested retail price is 90€!

Well finally got round to sorting the spare room as my study. Took a while to get my sis to collect the wardrobe; but at last I have a little room all for my Mac's, and other stuff that I really don't want in my bedroom.

Still need to get a nice set of speakers in there and some cloth wall hangings (teensy echo at the mo), but otherwise all done.

Here's a photo anyhoos.....

How are you finding the Mstand and Keyboard setup? I'm thinking of doing the same thing as I get neck/back ache due to looking down to my screen (bad posture). Is it too high as all ? I think the height of the screen is increased by 6 inches (?).

I will be getting an external monitor in the future so this will be a great addition to the Stand.

Thanks

Photo editing involves a lot more than using iPhoto. Once you're working in photoshop with files larger than several gigs, a strong workstation is almost a must, especially when time is money.

As for 3x30" displays, it comes down to personal preference. Some can edit with a single 15" display, where as some people need 4-5 monitors. If it cuts down time and increases productivity, I say go for it.

You have obviously never used Aperture. It brings my quad Xeon Mac Pro at work to it's knees and I only have 1x 27". The more real estate the better.

You need to think beyond the iApps to understand. :)

Did you use the first build of AP3 before they fixed the Faces rendering problem? It ate through my (then) 12 GB RAM and brought the 8-core MP to its knees...I could almost hear it crying. :D

No it's all up to date. At my work we use extremely high MP images of up to 1GB or more each. I told them to get the 8 core but the typical money savers the management is they tried to save a few hundred. The quad gets by okay though. Has 16GB RAM.

We build and test giant printers that start at $140,000. They are about the size of an average bedroom.

if you prefer good solid bass go the logitech x250s or x540s. I have the later and are great! Aw I was expecting to see Mr G4. Somewhere! Awsomely neat setup though.

Mr G4 lives in the lounge for now, (has his own desk). As for the speakers - I am thinking about the Acoustic Energy Aego M 2.1's.

Is that an Ikea table and chair? My desk is a bit like that as well, but with a more boring looking chair :p
the chair is from ikea (albeit they don't sell it anymore); the table is not from sweden :p dunno where my parents got it (it was like 10-15 years ago) but I'm quite sure is a piece of italian furniture

For me it's just perfect, not too high at all. see this picture for reference
mstand_ergonomics.jpg

also the screen it's not so distant form the chair, at least for me. and when I think that the text on a webpage is too small, I pinch to zoom on my magic mouse thanks to bettertouchtool :D
