Here is an updated pic of my setup:

Image

Looks slick.

I'm curious what prompted you to go with a mini + Thunderbolt displays instead of a 27" iMac + Thunderbolt display. It seems like they would be about the same price, so I'd be interested to know why you went with this combo... Partly because I think a mini + dual monitors is the best-looking Apple setup you can get, but the iMac seems like a better buy dollar wise. :D

I would do this because
1) both monitors are same hight.
2) when your computer breaks you still have 2 great displays
3) you can upgrade the mini with a new for less $

Three reasons.

1) The mini is so easy to upgrade compared to the iMac. I installed an SSD in 5 mins. Can't say the same for the iMac.

2) I can swap out the mini and it wont cost me much to upgrade.

3) Two thunderbolt displays looks better than iMac + thunderbolt display.

I agree. I don't think you can emphasize #2 enough either. When the ivy model comes out, you can sell this one for not horrible money and buy the new one and know it won't be some outrageous amount. All the while, your displays will be ready to go and already in place.

Did you not consider getting the dual core i7 option though for a bit more processor punch (BTO at Apple.com)? However, if you think like me and simply want to upgrade when ivy comes out, you probably think it's not worth taking the time to do a BTO now and then lose more money when you do swap out the mini at some point.

Honestly, I would love a dual thunderbolt setup. Sadly, I can't even have one thunderbolt display as I do not have room for a display that large.

I originally had the base model mini 2.3Ghz with 8GB ram and SSD drive. Then I decided to upgrade to the mini server quad core i7. To be honest, I didn't feel much of a difference.

That is when I bit the bullet and purchased a 2nd thunderbolt display. I learned the hard way that the graphics card in the mini server could not handle both displays so I was forced to downgrade to the mid level model because that is the only mini that can handle both displays.

I ended up installing the 8GB of ram and SSD into the mid level mini and I am VERY happy.

I updated my desk a few times since my last post.I can never be sufficed with my current desk options.

This was a tentative idea but unfortunately it was just to cumbersome for my needs...and simplicity was not a forte of this elaborate setup

BUT I trimmed the fat off this morning and i really love it,Although i have to get used to not having a dual monitor setup.

Awesome, very neat. Definitely looks cleaner than the tri-monitor setup. You should post a pic of your cable management.

My desk has a built in cable management system underneath that i usually use to my advantage. This is pretty simple since the only cable used is the iMac power supply.

temporary desk set-up:

I have no idea what my old username was on here so i had to create a new account :p

anyways, while i have my office under construction i had to set up a temporary location to get my work done... like our basement. slapped some paint on the walls and, threw down some carpet, and sparked up the power mac G5 to heat my legs:

it's incredibly temporary but it gets the job done. i can't afford to be with out my workspace as it keeps me paid.

for the most part all the wires are hidden and coiled, but all that needs to be done to move this set up is to unplug from the wall and go!

I'm jealous... That walls...

Haha i got to say... those pics don't do these walls justice! but i am thinking about stenciling them a bit to keep me sane while being surrounded by them.

sigh. I want a Cintiq 21ux so bad

one of the greatest investments I've ever made. Was wary of making the leap of buying one while i was in school but it cut down my work load immensely, and has paid for itself over and over now that I've graduated.

Thanks! That makes a lot of sense (especially being able to upgrade the mini to whatever you want). And I absolutely agree with #3! Yours is one of the classiest looking setups I've seen - nice!

I like the dual 27"ers, looks sexy. OTOH, after having duals for a while I don't really think I'd need them.

The 27" definitely looks better than the iMac!
