Guilty. And I damn well deserved that jab for making that comment! It's probably one of the stranger things I've posted on MacRumors where it's like.. dang why'd I do that? You guys don't need to justify your stuff, especially not to some random on the internet.

I was making a point on an observation of mine - kinda neat to learn more about it though I admit. And while I don't believe the spirit of my comment was to suggest you were dressed for a marathon while merely going for a jog (that wasn't exactly the point), well.. I don't blame ya'll for seeing it that way. Ouch, makes it sound 10x worse. At least. lol.

The point was that I've noticed people really like to dress for the occasion, eg athletic gear for athletic stuff, golf gear for golf stuff, I mean I could think of dozens of examples. So when I see the mechanical keyboard, I'm thinking "Oh this guy is definitely trying out some games! Maybe he bought half life on steam and wants to become more pro"

Utterly terrible that thought process. It's walked through my mind at least a few times. I passed up buying a mechanical keyboard myself because I thought they were too noisy - but that was after watching damn near every person I know buy one. (Some of them did it for gaming, others didn't).............. so yeah.....

Commonmind, I'm very glad you are able to get whatever you need to get your work done as efficiently as possible. After doing some work over the summer I was able to tie up all kinds of loose ends that had been needing to be taken care of (lol, our computing infrastructure in this household was completely falling apart. every computer was either about to fall apart or had already done so). Did I mention macgyvering sucks? Having some new gear sure made stuff a lot easier... so I can totally see where you're coming from

So I can totally see where you're coming from. Again I want to apologize profusely for making my crappy observation such that you had to justify your hardware. That's terrible on my part :(

Upvote from me - glad to see someone admitting his mistake while also calmly explaining his point of view. This is how all internet/forum discussions should be!

Hey man, no harm no foul. That's why I kept my response descriptive, rather than snarky. I didn't detect any venom in your original comment; I merely felt like explaining that sometimes the uses for, or the purposes of, the gear can often be justified, despite the sometimes ludicrous nature of the setups in these posts.

To completely contradict myself: I too have heard the stories of the lone laptop heroes; in my contract life, I've done work with companies who've deployed projects for Reebok, NBC/Universal, Elle Decor, and Wizards of the Coast. Here we are, snotty devs working in our nicely decorated offices, stacked to the brim with the latest gear, when Nike.com's designers release a blog post about how the new nike.com site (a direct competitor to a project I was deploying at the time) was designed and built on one MacBook Air. Talk about wind out of your sails. I've also read interviews with Skrillex (despite peoples' opinion of the guy, there's no doubt he's successful and has an audience that buys his records) where he talks about his first major album being produced on an old MacBook Pro with ******, blown out speakers.

Either way, kudos to those guys. They are better men than I; true masters of their craft.

And up-vote to you sir, for being a gentleman and keeping it constructive.

Have you ever visited Nike.com with the intent to find and purchase something?

I'm not surprised that it was designed and built on a Macbook Air. Probably an 11" base model, too. At least that explains why it's so awful to navigate and use.

If you're looking for one of their extremely popular products, it's not too bad. But browsing or looking for something that isn't so mainstream.. terrible.

lol on that note, finishline (which is owned by woolworths, aka footlocker/champs/footaction) had a site redesign last year that was promptly pulled about 2 weeks later because of the complaints. xD

It was kinda cool looking, but very unconventional for an online store.

On minimalism: I used to know someone in class that did all their homework (in visual studio, no less) on an eeePC laptop. That was back when they had the shape of a ~13" laptop but they had a black piece of plastic to fill in the extra space around the 10" screen. His code window was about the size of an iphone lol.

I have; and while I totally agree there is some serious user experience concerns, the feat of building a site of that size and scope on barebones hardware is no less impressive; those were UX design decisions that would have failed had they been executed on any type of hardware.

It seems like a lot of sporting goods websites have issues. Or maybe i'm terribly picky.. and I look at those types of sites a lot.

I was mostly joking. I mean, the site is bad, but I know that it doesn't really have anything to do with the hardware that was being used.

My work setup and my home setup.

Work is a 2012 MacPro and home is a rMBP loaded. Both are 2x 24" monitor setups and other misc goodies.

I should probably point out how absolutely ****** I am at picking up on any semblance of humor on the internet unless it contains a OMGLOL or j/k at the end. Like, horrible at it. Which makes it super duper easy to troll me.

Love the look of those speakers, though never heard of them.
Postal address so I can come grab them?

Still getting used to using Mac as a Windows PC, but going great!
old model USB Creative Sound Blaster works with Win/MacOS,
so does the Dual SATA USB dock.

Certainly a step away from this:

Where if it wasn't cool to have two genuine IBM PCs, it was to have two CD burners!
and notice the multi coloured network cables plugged into the router :)
That UPS was discarded by a company, but still good, and could run
the whole show for a long time.

What monitors are those at home? Interesting bezel color.

Acer G24's. Got one years back, love the color orange, went well with my gaming PC setup. Picked a 2nd one up off eBay a year or so later, wanted matching monitors for a dual setup, hard to find when discontinued.

Now I kinda of regret the color choice, but oh well.

Well, apparently, in real life, my sarcasm is so believable that people don't know when i'm being sarcastic.

It wasn't like a haha joke. I just wasn't completely serious about the MBA attributing to bad design.

So it was probably a mixture of me being bad at conveying that i'm joking and you being bad at picking up on it. Let's share the blame!

Close up of the 17'' iMac G4, working as decent secondary desk machine coupled with teleport alongside my i5 iMac, for mouse & keyboard control.

The iMac G4 by Ryan J. Nicholson, on Flickr

I upgraded the ram to 1GB, fitted a faster 80GB HD and gave it a major clean, other than a small scratch on the LCD its in pretty good condition, but I can't really complain since I only paid £29.00 for it.

My setup at the moment.

Obviously my gaming PC with eyefinity. But to the left of it I have a 2009 mac mini and iPod nano. And to the right is my Linux laptop.

Decided it was time to buy a new toy :) Sold the Mini and purchased the Air and i couldn't be happier.

Moved my xbox over to utilise the monitor when the Air isn't plugged in.

Also picked up the Book Arc stand.
