This was my work setup but now we're working from home for the rest of 2020 so I moved everything home.
Which Dell monitor is that? Is it a 27in or 32in? I like the thin bezels...Is it 4K? I currently have a cheap Viotek monitor from Amazon...its nice(34in ultra wide) but I miss the 4k monitor I had before but 27in seems kinda small now.

U3219Q

I had pretty stupid high requirements for a display

1. 4K or 5K
2. 27" +
3. P3 and Adobe RGB
4. USB-C
5. IPS Display
6. thin bezels
7. USB Hub
8. fully matte finish.

This fits the bill perfectly. I actually wish it was slightly smaller but if I ever get a MacPro, this is going to be the monitor I stick with and likely pair it with a 2nd one right beside it so they match. This iMac is the top of the line model they still sell now minus the 128GB of RAM (half of that) so I've never felt like I need more power. I think if Apple makes a 30 or 32" iMac Pro 5K or 6K, I'd upgrade to that.

When doing Photo editing and video editing, I default to the Dell because it really is that much nicer than the iMac's screen but in a different way. hard to explain. I've had it since January and I really love it. My favorite monitor since my old school 30" Dell LCD from 2007 that was 2560x1600 I think. HUGE heavy, you could cook eggs on it but many it was beautiful

Here was early 2018.
I coded on that 2012 iMac full time for a good while, and it lives on in a different location.

Then I got a mini, eGPU, and needed to merge my music and coding worlds together :

If you wanted to save to desktop, here's both displays iMac (photo) + Dell (gallery):

Give you an idea of how Lightroom's UI elements deal with the resolution. maximum res on this, a lot of apps simply don't scale. iMessages looks like garbage so I generally scale down the resolution when not editing photos / video.

I think this might be a slightly updated version of the dell monitor I currently have. I have the Dell P2715Q which is also a 4K IPS panel. I just don't know if its really worth the upgrade because of the smaller bezels and USB-C, otherwise I'd assume its similar spec.

Nope, there's a difference. You have a P2715Q monitor. The P-series is a 'cheap' series, whereas the U-series is the Ultrasharp monitors. The Ultrasharps are calibrated to outstanding color values (the blacks: not so much, and the lighting uniformity could be better), but they are very good in color. The P-series, as far as I know, are not from the same quality. In addition, the U-series feature the 4-sided borderless design, while the P-series still have the thicker 'chin'.

Then the numbering: the 27 stands for the size. So you have a 27" monitor, while @adamjackson has a 32" monitor.
The 15 in your monitor stands for the model year: 2015. The 3419 is 4 years newer than the 2715. I'm not sure what the Q stands for, but it has to do with the specs. For instance, the monitor i have, is available without usb-c (U2719D) and with usb-c (U2719DC).

So no, it is not a slightly updated version of your monitor, it is a different line of monitors and it is 4 years newer than yours.

In the BenQ range I use the Q normally stands for QHD (2560 x 1440). U is normally for UHD (3840 x 2160).
If looking for good colour then I’d check out their SW range. The SW271 I use is very good value for money when you compare it to an Eizo.

I agree on the blacks bit. the iMac 5K sitting next to the Dell 32" the iMac has a far nicer blacks and color accuracy to the dell Could just be Apple's own calibration for their software & OS but I prefer reading on the iMac and I prefer editing photos on the dell.

This is my current setup, just picked up new chair and its fantastic.
Yeah the Aeron is so worth it. Lotta people skimping on chairs in this thread, and I think it's actually the most important part of the whole equation if you're logging a lot of desk hours. My last desk job, they gave us Aerons and I just never got tired of sitting in it.

hahaha yeah I think you went to town on that response there.

Obviously I know mine is an older monitor because like you correctly noted I purchased about 5 years ago.
I run my monitor at the same res as the one were chatting about anyway, so not sure if the improvements will be visible to myself right now. I would be upgrading for the small bezels effectively in my mind.

Do let me know if anyone has any recommendations though! I'm open to any monitor brand really. Just something again thats good for the next 5 years, has good screen for photo editing, but also for proper retouch stuff I aint doing, I send it away. So doesn't have to be THE best.

@ncrypt Thinking of adding a secondary vertical monitor myself for some extra screen real estate. Did you experience any issues with your setup with one horizontal and one vertical display?

Not at all, once the monitors were properly aligned in System Preferences the pointer moves really naturally between the two.

I will say though that I do have to stretch my neck a fair bit to see things at the top of the vertical monitor, but I've kept items that I only glance at infrequently up there. I wouldn't want to actually do any work at that height. Both screens are 27" and I keep the horizontal 27" display in front of me at eye level.

I would love some recommendations for monitor riser as I'm looking to upgrade mine too something that suits the look of the setup a bit more.

What type of work do you guys do, if you don’t mind me asking?

Doesn’t have to be specific if you want, just the general field.

Yeah, that's what I'm a bit worried about, too. In theory a 21-23" display rotated by 90° shouldn't be much taller than the 27" iMac but I haven't found a high-resolution (aka 4K) one that rotates yet. It's always either-or.

Looking at the LG27UK850-W now, a 27" 4K display with USB-C for $450. Unfortunately, it is 25" tall when vertical and thus significantly taller than my iMac. So I'm not yet fully convinced.

Have you considered VESA mounting it, since most mounts will allow for rotation? You may have a better chance getting the height exactly as you'd like it next to your iMac as well.

Yes, thought about that too. Honestly I think my biggest fear (and what continues to make me go back and forth and change my mind on that purchase for at least two years now) is that a second display is going to clutter my desk too much for me to feel comfortable with. Been there, done that. I’m a big sucker for clean minimalist setups (see here) and adding a second display will most likely cause my anxiety levels to go through the roof :p.

For that very reason my next setup will definitely feature a single 34” or 49” ultra wide display, so whatever I buy now will be effectively useless in about a year or so when the iMac is depreciated and due for a replacement.

Maybe I‘ll just wait it out. Thanks for your input.

Added a HomeKit LED strip to the back of my monitor. The warm white is great when working in the evening.
