Here are my two setups. The cMP is my backup machine, just incase something happens to my nMP and it needs to go in for service (luckily, nothing like that yet (knock on wood)).

IMG_6268.jpg

This is actually my new setup that I just finished putting together Monday. I got the desk from Craigslist for $10(!!) and it's huge (82"x36") and spacious. The left monitor is a Dell Ultrasharp 3008WFP display (30", 29" viewable), also new to me ($100 on CL). Right monitor is a Dell ST2421L that I got new about a year and a half ago. My keyboard is actually in mint condition, but I have a skin on it to protect it from dust, that's why it looks worn. The iPhone dock to the right (currently holding my iPod nano 7th Gen) is gonna be replaced shortly with it's Space Gray aluminum brother to match my 6s Plus coming on Friday. Not pictured: 2013 Mac Pro (behind monitor #2), iPhone 6 Plus, late-'11 13" MBP, Apple Watch 42mm SS-RSB.

This is my 4,1->5,1 oMP that I poured my blood, sweat and tears into restoring and upgrading. I found it as an almost empty shell (just the case, lobo and processor card) for $40 at an e-recycler, then built it from there. It's now complete, even with an official Apple power cord, and runs like a champ. Display is a 20" Cinema Display I got from the Marketplace on here for $20-$30 (I forget) and the keyboard and trackpad were given to me by a family member who got a new iMac and no longer needed these.

Nice setups you got there.
Ive been thinking about putting together an older Mac Pro system myself but not sure if it'll be worth it?!?!

I'm jealous of this one. Nice Mac Pro! I'd love to find one for a screaming deal and build a monster out of it.

Thank you! If you can find the machine pretty cheap I think it is! The 4,1s are fairly easy to upgrade to 5,1s with a hex-core CPU. If you want a dual CPU machine though, get a 5,1. The cMP was my primary machine until I got my nMP.

Thanks! I'd just keep an eye on Craigslist for one for cheap if you want one. They are a blast to work on! Everything is so easy to upgrade/repair. This was a fluke find too! I mainly went to get a handful of PPC laptops and the guy had a stack of G5s/cMPs and didn't know the difference between them. The only 4,1 in the lot so I nabbed it. The case has some flaws not shown though, and it retains it's old asset tag.

How's that Macbook working out for you, does it reach your needs properly?

I bought the 12'' MacBook because it looks like a piece of art and it's a light MacBook, it was a gamble of buying it because I didn't know if it could handle my needs as a student! Now I have one I am really pleased with it, you're able to do things with it which I thought it wasn't capable of doing it.
This MacBook handles easily Safari (multiple tabs), Word, PowerPoint, Mail, iMessage, Spotify without having any lag! Also I am capable of doing some video editing in 1080p and 4K with FCP and it won't lag!

Everyday I get compliments from people how stunning the MacBook is looking and that makes it even more special of owning one!

Sounds like you bought the right Macbook! I'm a MPR 13'' 2015 owner since a few months, first Macbook ever. I have to say that I'm really pleased with my result as well. I wanted to get the Macbook 12'' but it was too much of a risk since no one near me had one. Must say, hearing from you.. I wish I got the Macbook 12'' just because of the weight of it alone haha.

Before owning this new 12'' MacBook I owned also a MPR 13'' 2014 but as a student you need to walk to different college rooms etc. it was to heavy to carry it all day long in my backpack, so since a few months I bought the 12'' MacBook and having that one in my backpack is a difference between two worlds!! Hahaha you'll like the MPR for sure after using it for a while, but keep in mind that the 12'' MacBook is also an option ;)

Haha, I can relate to that. I'm a student as well and it's quite heavy. Maybe in year or 2 I might consider getting the Macbook 12''. Sounds like a nice piece of machinery :)

Are you running El Capitan GM? I have the exact same MacBook, and if not, you're going to be in for a major treat this week when you upgrade. The speed and usability difference between it and Yosemite is absolutely night and day.

At the moment running Yosemite on my rMB, but Wednesday I'll definitely update to El Capitan! Very nice to hear that you have some experience with El Capitan and that the update improves speed and usability!!

My crazy setup/studio, this is the 9th major revision (if anyone couldn't tell, I modeled the lighting on the TARDIS)

Few questions for you on your setup is that the iMac 5k? And is that the Grovemade iMac stand? How are you liking both? I am considering getting that iMac and love Grovemade products so was wondering your thoughts on them.

Also really like the 12" Macbook would probably get it in the grey because I love that color but awesome to hear people's thoughts on it. I think when they update it I would consider having one of those for my mobile machine since by then my Retina Macbook Pro will be a little long in the tooth haha.

Love both the 5k iMac and the grovemade stand. The wood is really high quality and matches the desk perfectly. The 5k iMac is amazing to use, however, I use a 10 core Mac Pro for video editing now, so my iMac is used for the photo editing I do (36 MP full frame photos)

The 12 inch MacBook is great, however I only use it for web browsing and document editing. If you were to get one, I would recommend keeping your rMBP handy because with a clean install, it should be a good machine for many years.

how's the power bill? :D

Not horrible, not great :D All those lights are LED and believe it or not, I think the stereo might use the most energy out of all that.

Thanks for that, I do some photo editing at RAW but am an amateur photographer so it's not something I do a lot of. My thought would be the iMac 5k for home/intensive work and the 12 inch Macbook for travel since when I travel I don't use as intensive of software. I wish I liked the iPads because I think that would fit the travel niche well also, but I have owned 3-4 through my job and keep giving them to people or selling because I just don't find them as effective as laptops.
