my setup at school

I love how it looks all high tech and industrial with the brick wall. This is one of my favorites so far, very nice. Thanks for sharing. :)

To those of you who are at school and or have limited space, yet still manage to have such clean setups, well done. I have a lot of space, and my desktop is not messy, but cluttered with um... well I guess toys fits the bill best hehe. :D

Cheers, supposed I should've listed what it is.

iMac 20" 2.16GHz 2GB RAM 256 MB X1600
iPhone 8GB 1.1.4 Unlocked
Macbook 2.2GHz 4GB RAM

The external drives are hidden away under a bookshelf in the other corner of the room.

Can't remember posting it, might have a little dig around to see if I did.

edit:Found it

I have posted before but you can't see much of my setup. I still have the eyes but they haven't made it back onto the iMac yet.

ZOMG! :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:

Same way everyone else does, I'd think... buy a computer, take it to school, and set it up on a desk/some other table. ;)

how?? thats the thing, the principle doesnt care if someone goes and puts their expensive toy on a random table?? i find it odd, or is it just allows to bring in your own system, and you have space limitation

I'm sure they can bring whatever they want into their dorm as long as they follow the rules.

My setup:
Dude! I love it! How do you like that chair? Do your arms get cold if you rest them on the armrests? I was considering getting one, and wondered if they are padded enough/too cold, etc. Love the Air. It looks very classy. Thanks for sharing. :)

Well, that is one MORE than you will find under my desk. I'm kind of fanatical about cable clutter, no matter how little there is. If my desk wasn't such a pain to move, I'd try to snap some shots of my awesome cable management scheme. It works super good.

Nice! I need you to come over ASAP and help me address my cord and clutter issues, please! :) Every time I've tried to do this, I end up getting a new gadget or component (or system), and have the option of starting over, due to my methods, or just tossing hands in the air and refusing to look below the desk. I'm thinking about putting a curtain under there just to hide them the lazy way. ;)

haha! you use your woofer as a foot rest as well?

I don't need to manage cables. my desk hides the mess and the only way to see it is to look above and behind it.

The chair is great, extremely comfortable. As for the armrests I live in Miami so I can't really tell how well it would do up north but the chair is worth it.

OK, I will now reveal my secret. It all starts with some of this....

cubestoragevq0.jpg

You can find that stuff just about everywhere. Its just your basic metal cube storage rack. The metal squares are one piece, then the plastic corner pieces hold them together however you want. All you need is the metal squares though.

Then, what you are going to want to do is measure out how much you will need. I used 7 pieces. There are 3 down each side of my desk, and then another in the middle right in back.

Here is where the real work comes in. What I did was nail that stuff to the top ledge of the desk. Just a couple nails on both sides to hang it on, then I bent them over so it won't come off.

Then, after you have all your metal squares hung, all you have to do is get to routing the cables. I just did a basic weave with them. The nice thing is, if you have lots of slack in some cables, you can just do some loops with it, and its all the same.

Here are some quick pics to show what I have...

No, I should say, there are a couple things that make this work well for me, and why it might not for you.

First off, my desk is wood (duh). If you don't have that, you are either out of luck, or will have to find other means to hang the metal squares.

The second is that the back edge of my desktop and the back of that lower back-splash are separated by about 5 inches. This gives plenty of room for the squares to hang down with room to work and route the cables easily. Also, they don't clank around and rattle, which my "500W Footrest" is known to do. :D

And lastly, that lower back-splash is just long enough that you can't see the metal squares hanging down. This desk was my parents old desk. I just took it because I wanted a new one, not knowing initially how sweet it would turn out to be.

I hope that gives people an idea of what I'm working with. Its slightly messy back there if you get down and look. But really, who does that?? I take the "Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind" approach to cabling. You never see them after you have things wired, so if its a little messy, who cares. But, with my system, even though it might look a little cluttered, if I need to get any of the cables out, its a snap, since they are all routed in separate loops.

If you have any other questions, let me know, and I will try to answer. Or get better pics, if anyone wants. I'd rather not have to move the desk, but if people want to really see it, I can work on that this weekend. Let me know.

So as much as I can tell form the pictures, you have the metal racks monunted on the backside of the desk at the top of the edge. They prevent them from hanging below onto the floor correct? I think I'm looking at this correctly. That's a clever setup.

Sorry. Like I said, the pics aren't the easiest to get with the desk where it is. I would have to move it to get a good look, and that is a pain.

Yes, that is correct what you are thinking. Two nails for the rack to hang out, which I then bent over into hooks, so they don't slip off. The desktop is about 1-1/2" thick, which helps as well. That gave me room to mount these, and yet not see them from the top.
That's a clever setup.
Thank you. It took about 4 hours one day, of mostly trial and error. But, once I figured the system out, it was a piece of cake. And now, I have no wires showing.

Very nice, clean setup, I'll have to remember that in my future setups. I also need to find a way to rig a little system on the backside of the desk to hold wires that are hanging while I take my computer on the go. Little hooks to hold different cables that I would plug into my computer when I dock on my desk.
