yeah, i think it is. it may look good on the picture but if you want a good and stable desk, stay away from it.

About IKEA, I'd disagree. I've owned several IKEA desks and they're all stable as can be. The stability lies in their simplicity. Legs, metal frame, wood top. The materials are ridiculously strong, imo. It all depends on the person putting it together. I make sure to tighten everything well and I take the time to build them. The result is a phenomenal desk. We got a desk from Staples that although was more "stylish" than an IKEA desk (i.e. more complex, etc.), but it was the biggest piece of garbage ever. The wooden legs weren't the same length and it was a mess. Gave it back and got another gallant...perfection again.
Now, as that's not your desk, I'd say you are completely unqualified to say whether its stable or not.

Frankly, for the price, Ikea makes some of the sturdiest desks I've ever seen. I know several people who use them and my next desk is definitely going to be one one like then one you're referring to.

Agreed.

And I never understood why people keep posting PC setups in Mac Setup thread... And why people quote images.

My E-Peen is now Shrivelled. I run OSX, but I guess it needs to be made by Apple, to make it a MAC. Sorry, my mistake, I'll make sure I don't post here again.

All the best

you dont actually need an app do do this. just sleep the MacBook by shutting the lid and connect the external display, power and a USB keyboard & or mouse and then press the keyboard or mouse and it will wake up and show the desktop on the external display. you can also use a bluetooth keyboard or mouse by selecting "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this keyboard" in Bluetooth's advanced preferences.

richthomas right, I forgot that I used my MacBook a little different before. Good point on Bluetooth devices, I didn't know that before.

Hi cleanup yes you right it's GMA950 card and yes it's running 1680x1050 with no issues. I only use Photoshop for editing and I have not seen any issues.
I wouldn't worry about performance if I were you. Timing maybe...

To make MacBook work with close lid I had to install special program that won't let it go to sleep I also had a keep one usb devise connected at all time for that to work (mouse in my case) I can't recall the name of that program of top of my head right now but you can do a quick search and find it out...

Hmm. Is it possible to have the MacBook running only the external screen then? I don't mind so much about closed lid mode but I just don't want the MacBook driving two screens at once.

Sure is. Make sure a keyboard and mouse (as well as the VGA or DVI cord) are connected, then close the lid and wake the machine back up with it connected to the monitor. You're done. No extra software needed.

You need it connected to the power source as well for it to work in clamshell mode.

You'd think people would have it plugged in if they're at a desk with all the other junk you'd need

One can never be to sure though, as some people will try it quick and it won't work and then they will come on here and start a topic about how their MacBooks won't work in clamshell mode!:p

You're saying I need to have it plugged in when I wake it from sleep. But what if I have it running in clamshell mode then unplug the MagSafe? Will it suddenly cut the DVI output?

I only ask because I'm pretty anal about keeping my laptop plugged in when it's fully charged.

I thought it was the other way around. If I do not have my laptop plugged in while running in clamshell mode it doesn't seem to want to drive the external display.

I believe that to operate in clamshell mode, the laptop must be plugged in. I think it may say so in the support section of Apple's website.

Well that sucks.

What's clamshell exactly mean? Just that the MacBook is driving an external display without driving its own or that the lid is closed? I could keep the lid open, I just only want the external display and the option to unplug my MacBook when it's fully charged.

Clamshell mode is when the lid is fully closed.

What you're wanting to do is the exact same as clamshell only with the lid open. To do that, you'd have to put it into clamshell mode first and then open the lid for the MacBook's internal display to be off and the external display to be on. Hover, as I said, it's essentially still the same as clamshell, and you might as well be plugged in unless you want to drain your battery.
