OK I see a bunch of External Screen setups in here... What's the preferred option? Mini DP to VGA or DVI or HDMI?! I just got the VGA one tonight and hooked it up to a 22" HP and I wasn't very impressed... is there a huge step from VGA?

My setup...

Well, here is my humble setup-- I am just a lowly college student still living at home, so it ain't much.

I have my mac set up in a bookshelf that sits at the foot of my bed. It is kind of well placed. I enjoy working on and around my bed on homework and essays. When I need to use my windows desktop (CIS major, it's necessary), I just remote desktop using CoRD.

Yeah, it is tiny but I love how nicely everything fits together. There is just enough room for everything to lay pleasantly.

Top shelf: Vintage GE Flip Clock Radio, Controllers for my
entertainment system across the room, WoW discs and Cocoa books.
Bottom shelf: Free Agent HDD (for Time-Machine), Macbook 2.4, LG enV, iPod Classic, and Logitech G5 (on WoW mousepad).

I notice a lot of you guys have that flip clock screen saver on your computers... In my opinion, nothing beats the real thing. ;D

Just thought I would share finally. This is a fun thread.

USB HUB
500GB Time Capsule

On the bottom shelf:

2.53 Uni MBP
100GB FireLite

some cheap speakers that sound pretty decent

Hey for all you MBP/ext. monitor users out there (there are a lot of you, obviously), what made you choose MBP with external display over iMac? Did maybe somebody out there regret this decision?

MBP is faster than iMac.

And you retain portability.

My sentiments exactly - to add, I have found that there are two types of computer users - people that need their "workspace," to which an iMac is ideal; and people that do not. Price is obviously a large factor in deciding as well - you can get a 24' iMac for $1800 while the price of a base MBP and decent monitor can cost around $2200. If you go the all Apple route, you're looking at getting a MBP and 24' LED, you're looking at Mac Pro price territory.

Ultimately, your decision should be based on two factors - the way you work and what your budget is.

Personally I don't really like the looks of the iMac. It might be a widescreen monitor but the entire computer is just a square. But that's just my personal opinion. Portability is obviously a big factor.

The iMacs are actually faster than the MBPs generation-wise speaking. Aka the new iMacs are going to be faster than the current MBPs. It's always been like that.
But yeah portability...

I use to use a MBP with external display but recently added an iMac. If I couldn't have both I would 100% choose a MBP with external over an iMac. The only disadvantage in my opinion (aside from cost) is that you don't have a machine up 24/7. I wanted a machine that was up all the time for downloads, airtunes, and network shares but if you don't need this then it isn't a problem. With a laptop and external you can easily take your work with you whether it be on a personal/work trip or even to the other room.

Dammit. And I was waiting for new iMacs, lol. Oh Macrumors, the tempting words that flow around here.
