Why the two computers and only one display?
Money?

really don't understand the point of that comment. Is there really something BAD about products looking nice? is it that hard to understand why someone would want a nice looking product? c'mon, spare me. I'd love to hear the other side of this arguement... Person A: "Yea, I love my dell. Who cares if it's 3" thick?" Person B: "Yea!!! Stupid Apple users, hideous brown Zune ftw!"
PM me if you want to continue this discussion, this isn't the place.

Extremely poor analogy. A £20,000 car will have a different engine, transmission, chassis, suspension, etc. to a £10,000 car. However a £400 ACD has exactly the same components under the aluminium than a £200 LCD has under the plastic.

Almost right, but not quite
Many car companies use the chassis, suspension, engines etc across several models.

Car companies which own different Marques will use standard set ups:
A Jaguar x-type is basically a Ford Modeo with a different body.
The Skoda Octavia is the same car as the VW Passat

The Bridge

I use my computer as a 3D modelling and rendering workstation in the architecture & interior design field, you caught me slacking off ! (ps Sketchup Archicad & Artlantis)

Yah thought it was something like that from the drawings in the back.

That also explains that little joystick thing (I forget what it's called, it was in MacWorld a while ago, no?) that I have absolutely no use for but want one nevertheless!

Are you an architect then? My girlfriend is one and I am curious... PM me if you will :)

Space Navigator

Yeah 3Dconnexion space navigator it works with sketchup (on smaller models) but the real trip is flying in google earth i seriously warn you its addictive like an airwolf simulator

I'll have to get my hands on one then. Speaking of flight sims, do you think it'd work with FSX?

I would love for you to explain this to me

I'm sure you would, maybe you should do a search on the forum because the difference have been outlined by the professionals that use these monitors every day and have to know the differences because of their job.

These threads are normally about the differences between dell and apple, but other monitors that use the same panel are the same.

as I still don't see the justification for paying twice as much to get an aluminium case on the same panel.

To be quite honest, if you can't justify it, then you don't need the better display.

I'd like to see you back that claim up by showing me where I can find an equivalent quality (that's a very important requirement) 20 inch widescreen display for around £199.50 (half the apple cost).

EDIT: There is a good thread called "A Creative Pro's Guide To LCD Screens"

As I have already pointed out, the ACDs use exactly the same panels as many other, substantially cheaper, monitors. There is therefore no functional difference between the ACD & the cheaper competitor, especially from a 'professional' viewpoint where performance comes before how pretty the bezel is.

How about a 20" Dell E207WFP for £191.40? So essentially your choice is this - you can have 1 panel in a fancy aluminium case, or two identical panels in black plastic cases.

Hell, for <£50 more than the 20" ACD you could have a 24" Dell 2407WFP-HC or a 24" LG L245WP whereas Apple currently seem to be charging £600 for a mere 23" - not to mention that it doesn't sport any connections other than D-SUB & DVI - the larger, cheaper, identical-quality 24" Dell offers both of these plus composite-, component- & s-video inputs.

That monitor has a 6-bit TN panel. Crap for color reproduction and accuracy. The 20'' ACD has an 8-bit S-IPS panel.

Anyways, enough ACD bitching.

if you want to talk about it, take it to PM or make a topic in the peripherals section (or use one of the 100 topics on it already).

I agree. People need to do the research before they talk like "professionals"

Apple's monitors are overpriced compared to the competition; however, there is more than just a pretty housing that differentiates them from others.

Did you even read my post that he quoted? I said the difference.

That dell that lost eden posted has a 6-bit TN LCD panel (cheapest type). The ACD has an 8-bit S-IPS panel (best for color reproduction, accuracy, viewing angles).

He said from others, which means more than one. Are you telling me there are no monitors with 8-bit S-IPS panels that are cheaper than an ACD?
