You should start off with looking at different components you are going to need for the type of work you will be doing on your pc-the motherboard, hard drive, video card, fans, cases etc. New Egg has a good video to get you started.

There is also a guy on YouTube who works in a Canadian electronic store called NCIX. He has a lot of I formative videos. The channel is called NCIXcom, he has a few good build guides.

$500 should work for you unless you plan on going for the latest and greatest. Subscribe to Newegg's newsletter as they always have deals on anything you may need. Thats how I got most of my parts.

Thanks for all the info. There are no NCIX stores where I am but there are PC Cyber and Canada Computers stores. I don't think I would want super high end given that I don't care to play games too much. I just think it would be really good to learn Windows (whether MS is going downhill or not. lol) I've used Windows many times but I've never really tinkered with it. I also think it would be cool to "build my own" machine cause I like to mess around with stuff like that. To know how things work and what does what. What I don't want to deal with is all messy wiring that seems so common in PC towers. That's what I love about the Mac Pro. No wires to mess with or get tangled and stuff. I'll look into it and see if it's something I'd really like to pursue.

Your welcome!

And well, as you have seen in this thread, there are ways to steer clear of messy wiring. Cable management and a modular power supply is the best way to go. ;)

Getting a lil back on track, thought I'd post my current setup at work:

IMG_20120529_163102.jpg

Most of it's just stuff I'm prepping for rollout to users (I'm in IT). The dual display setup is mine (connected to a Dell microtower hidden behind the black minitower).

My apologies for getting the thread a bit off track. I Just felt it was the best place to ask my question.

Excuse the iPhone quality and the state of the desk! But this is what my setup realistically looks like when I'm getting things done. In this case, messing about with an Ubuntu install on my old laptop.

Main PC on the left = Acer M3400, 6 core 2.4GHz AMD Phenom II, 8GB RAM, Blu-ray, GeForce 315

Laptop = Sony Vaio VGN-NR10E, Dual core 1.6GHz Pentium, 2GB RAM, X3100 graphics (this thing is actually hackintoshed to a stable degree and no longer runs ubuntu)

Secondary PC on the right = Acer X3200, Quad Core 1.8GHz AMD Phenom, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA 9200 graphics

I gotta say I love the hell out of this thread. Just browsing a few pages makes me immensely happy I went all Mac a while back. I admit, some of those desktop builds look pretty cool and the Dell monitor from a few pages back is allright to the eye, but god damn those laptops are fugly.

Sorry for the bad iphone 4s pic. That and not so good lighting contributed to the poor quality pic. Heres my set up though.

Nice thread... Glad to see that there are non-PC haters here. I love all my Apple products... but I love my PC gaming rig just as much.:)

I'd like to buy a Mac in the future... but I just wanted to build a computer for the fun of it, and to learn and keep up with the technology today.

Here are a few pics of my first and only computer build below. For specs and a lot of pics... you can see build log thread on OCN.

2 last pics before I "upgrade" my gtx 550ti to a gtx 470. Made 20 bucks upgrading it too. :p

Coming this winter are a new corsair sata III ssd, 750w corsair hx psu, and a corsair h60.

Also, modded the case - it's now matte black.
