Since getting involved in the whole rumor culture surrounding Apple releases after being turned into a Switcher (minus the hardware purchase), I've been nothing but disappointed.

I would like to second that... nothing but dissapointment.

I've been away from the internet for a few days (yikes) and so when I saw this headline (PowerBooks Delays), but before I read the text, I thought it might be relevant to what's happened to my recent PowerBook order.

Finally tired of waiting for the mythical update for the 15" PowerBook, I went ahead and placed my order for the current 1 GHz TiBook last Tuesday (July 22). Estimated shipping time, 1-3 days. When the order's status changed to "Open", I was notified that it would ship "on or before" Friday, July 25.

Friday came and went, with no change in status. And you know, of course, that I was checking the Apple Store site every few minutes to see if it had shipped yet. Some time over the weekend (while I was away) they changed the shipping date to "on or before" Wednesday, July 30. So now my imagination goes into overdrive.

They're going to announce something this Tuesday. And they're holding off on my shipment because they're going to bump mine up to the updated model.

And then I read this story, and reality takes hold again. The only reason that my TiBook's shipment has been delayed a few additional days is because stuff happens. They're not going to announce an update on Tuesday.

I don't guess I have a point. Just anxiously awaiting my new notebook, whatever it's going to be. But Steve, if you're reading this, I am still open to you guys sending me the updated PowerBook if that works out for this Tuesday ;)

I just saw Thievery Corporation (they were okay) and one of the DJs had a 15" Ti PB. Made me think what the hell am I waiting for????

Well I guess the bright side of these long PB delays is that it must mean we are getting far more than just speedbumps to the 12'' and 17'' ... ok so I'm not seriously expecting G5 PB's, but SOMETHING nice ... but SOON please Mr Jobs??? ;)

Everyone plays on a TiBook! That's part of the reason I'm getting one; it's a professional grade machine with an audio in and out. If I don't do any other "DJing" with it, it'll make recording my mixes a lot easier

So is there a realistic chance that the new 15" PB might ship with Panther installed on it, since its taking so damn long?

if the 15" has not been released by august 15th i suggest we all storm apple hq and take them ourselves..

and then realize the pb's are not actually stored at apple hq...

and then apologise and clear up the mess...

apple - please make the price VERY competitive and this powerbook....and some free games would be nice!

And you expect Apple to do what, get even more mad at Motorola over this? They can't do a whole lot when the chip supplier hasn't made any of the chips. A laptop isn't much good if it doesn't have a CPU.

You were disappointed by the Power Mac G5? You must be very hard to please...

40% faster

100% too late

I'm going to wait for something with a G5 in it. Whichever comes first: iMac or PB.

Hurry up Apple. Watching the spinning blob of death is killing me.

I bet really Steve's reading these forums on his new 15" PowerBook having a chuckle at us. Then as soon as the PowerBook rumors stop...BAM! He releases them.

Maybe I'm just sick of PB rumors

Argh this is in-humane.

I can see Apples quandry, if they tell about the new models then people may not buy any of the current PB's but on the other hand a _lot_ of people know they are comming and are waiting anyway.

I think Apple should just release the specs (and prices) then people can make up there minds if they want to wait or not.

A reseller I spoke to on Saturday even agreed with me when I said that if I decided to go for the 15" inch id wait for the new models.

Please end this madness,

With the new PB's the thing I would love to see obove everything is a pc card slot on the 12 inch. Or even more interesting something in the ultra light, somewhere around 3.0-3.5 pounds. I'm shocked apple hasn't already done somehting around that. The only reason i own a pc is so I can bring it everywhere. I mean my PB is light but not as light as my 2.8 pound pc(running linux).

15in laptops

All I ever read here is why Apple should hurry up with new models. Be happy with what you've got. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither are new computers and the technology associated with them.

It's great, minus the ugliness, but I'm not in the market for a desktop. "Apple Macintosh" anagrams itself into "Laptop machines."

I don't expect Apple to update its products monthy or even quarterly, but it has been more than two hundred days since the release of the old PowerBook and I have the belief that computers are regularly reintroduced with new features.

Actually common mis-conception that, they had very advanced powertools back then :D

It seems this time that it's not Apple's fault (gasp), but still, they're coming when they're coming. Us moaning won't help. If we didn't know about these rumor sites we wouldn't have a clue about it anyway.

You know what, so do I. Through a friend I was introduced to the wonders of OS X just as I figured I should get a new laptop computer. I decided 'this is too cool to pass up, let's buy a Powerbook'.

But hang on a second, how will it sync with my new purchase: the Sony Ericsson P800 .... well, it wont. But with the new iSync, it will! ... is what they promised me. So I decided to hold on for a while. And then the new iSync came and it supports the P800 ... half-heartedly, the rest is 'coming soon'. Okay, that sucks ... hmm, will it sync with Entourage? Because it's marketed as syncing everything with everything, but it doesnt really. So no, Entourage doesnt work either. Hmpf. So I'm still waiting for the iSync update to work properly with what I would like.

And while I'm waiting for that, I start reading up on Mac issues ... still somewhat excited about the move to the World of Mac ... just because I like to come prepared. And then I find that the Powerbooks are being pushed forward. For god knows how long now! And now the rumors are 'mid september' ... what!!?!

To top it all off ... there is a new release of the OS coming. Oh goodie, more things to wait for.

I know that at some point I'm going to have to make the jump to actually go ahead and buy things. But thus far, this whole Mac thing has been a big disappointment for me. No wonder they deleted the Switch ad's from the website, they must be giving up on the campaign actually resulting into anything :p

Who here didn't think that a 15 inch upgrade to the Al form factor was going to occur soon after the release of the 12 inch and 17 inch.

If this story is correct, I would bet that Steve is hopping mad at Moto, and will be pushing IBM chips into pb's ASAP. Now, when ASAP is, I'm not sure...

MWSF g5 pbs is not outside the realm of possibility however, in my opinion. But I also bought MacWhispers g5-pbs-in-july story hook line and sinker, so perhaps my opinion isn't worth much... : - /

told you (apple!) so

When all the rumors were flying around before WWDC, I said what Apple should do is release an updated case no speed bump required. This would accomplish 2 tasks:

1. It would satisfy part of the crowd who wanted an update and keep sales moving - esp for back to school. The crowd that wouldn't be happy with no speed bump would bitch and moan anyway because it wouldn't be a G5 so no big loss. It also keeps people guessing by "resetting" the update rumor clock back to zero.

2. It sets Apple up to look good by announcing a speed bump later in August or Sept. Yes, this would piss of some people that just bought their PB's back in June but those same people will also be pissed that they don't have a G5 when it is announced. Products get updated in the tech world quickly (though not always in Apple's case) so most of us come to expect we will not always have the latest and greatest just three months after we buy it.

Both points would have even provided more benefits and better customer relations if they had been done back in Jan or March or May. Please don't tell me hind sight is 20-20. I was saying this (along with some others) back in March-June.

What do you mean by "work" w/entourage? Getting iSync to sync w/your phone or a PDA? I use entourage to sync with my palm and it works fine. I can't speak to syncing with a phone though.

BTW gadg (and other switchers/potential switchers) - you need to just take the plunge. You could play the same waiting for the next update in the PC world too. I will give you the 15" PB is long over due and not something you would normally find in the PC side of things. But, the ibooks, imacs, towers, other PB are all great computers. If you have to have some features in the 15" PB but didn't want buy because it would be updated - well look how long you would have been using your 15" if you would have bought months ago.

That would be nice and L3 cache. Oh one more thing, bump the resolution to something higher than 1024x768.

Sales

For those of you insisting that the delays are killing sales for back-to-school folks, you have to realize that much (no data to specify numbers) of the mac buying public out there don't read rumor sites and have no clue what's happening.
Rather, what's NOT happening.

So, temper your...temper...or provide data to back up your claim. I'm sure that all of your friends know all the juicy mac gossip, but you're dealing with a flawed data set there.

G5 Powerbooks - don't hold your breath.

That said, for those rumor-mongers who are paying attention to the long dealy in 15" updates, I feel sorry for you. I really do. Especially if you NEED a machine soon.

A September release would not help much, except for those who start *late* in September and are willing to wait, but these are sales Apple would have made anyway.
I completely agree. With all of the production delays and problems in getting the 15" PB updated (rumors that heat dissipation problems prevented release in January, and now rumors of Mot delaying it further), I am amazed at the sheer audacity of Apple refusing to even offer their customers some information.

I am completely amazed that Apple still sticks by their guns with the "no future product announcements" policy. At this point, they are losing back-to-school product sales to the Dells of the world, where if they would just announce that "hey, we're having problems getting parts for the new Powerbooks, but trust us, it'll be worth the wait," people would probably wait. It's all of this keeping their customers in the dark that is causing Apple to lose sales.

Steve Jobs and his reality distortion field is sometimes very bad for business.

Hehe... BT just came in concert here (for those that don't know who he is, he's one of the best Trance producers in the world, and contributed music to the Steve Jobs keynote at WWDC for the bakeoff between Logic Audio on the G5 and Cubase on the PC). Anyway, his show was called "Laptop Symphony", and yeah, it was all run from a TiBook (with a boatload of outboard MIDI gear of course). He mentioned in one of his interviews that he composes quite a bit of music on his TiBook when he's away from the PowerMac G4 in the studio.

You'd be suprised how old and ****ty a Powerbook can be and yet still make a great audio production machine. My second Powerbook was a 250mhz G3 (Kanga). Right before i sold it, i did some tests with Logic Audio on it. I was able to;

-Record & playback over 24 Tracks of audio
-Assign a multi-band EQ to each track (24 eq's)
-8 additional Compressors

At this point i was up to about 85% CPU saturation, but it still ran solid without a hiccup.

All this is to say that Powerbooks have for a long time been able to be good audio production machines. Not only that, but I think you'd be equally satisfied with makin' music on an Ibook, the G3 is, and has always been a very worthy processor for audio on a Mac.
