This might be a bit late for some, but here it is, the official thread of the Early 2019 PowerPC Challenge.

This challenge has been thought of and organized by @Gamer9430 since the Winter 2017 on this forum. They have been great fun and very popular.

Here are links to the previous editions:
2017 Inaugural Winter PowerPC Challenge
2017 Inaugural Summer PowerPC Challenge
2018 Second Winter PowerPC Challenge

------- The event -------

This one week long event is the occasion for us to enjoy and appreciate software and hardware from the past, dust off our dear old PowerPC machines and/or do weird experiments with them.

For one week, except for payed job/work, the participants of this challenge will only be using PowerPC based machines for all their computer related tasks. Be it gaming, browsing the web, watching videos on their computers, all must be done on a PowerPC machine.

Some gray areas exist about the usage of smartphones and tablets. Let's just say that in the spirit of the challenge, such device should not be used, or only for their primary functions (calls and messages). However, they can be a nice "workaround" of sorts for the least committed among us.

The previous editions of this challenge focused on using a PowerPC machine, regardless of the OS. Some people on this forum are well used to dealing with such computers everyday. As a consequence, I propose an additional difficulty.
Each person engaging in this edition will have to chose and announce in which category he or she will participate. Each category allows different types of systems and machines.

------- The categories -------

- Main set -

Basic
: Original hardware on 10.4 and 10.5
Advanced: Original hardware on 10.3>= and 9.x
Power: Original hardware, Kodiak or 8.x>=
Crazy: Original hardware Mac OS X Developer Beta (any)

- Others -

68k: Any 68k mac, any Apple system
Alternative: Original hardware on non Apple systems (MorphOS, Linux...)
Hello from afar: VM anything

------- The dates -------

The dates for the challenge are from Sat. Feb. 2 at 12pm (your time) to Sat. Feb. 9 at 11:59 am (your time).

------- The participants (alphanumerical order) -------
556fmjoe - Alternative - G4 running BSD
amagichnich - basic - G4 running 10.4 and 10.5

Edit about the poll

I know 68k is not a PowerPC architecture, but I can only add answers to the poll, not change the question nor alter already inputted possible answers (if anyone knows a trick :D). I added 68k because some might want to use those machines in a challenge like this, which is, in the end, about older macs. It would be nice to have a 68k challenge, but I don't know how many people would/could join such an event. I'll keep this idea for later though!

Added everyone so far. Added a 68k category, because, why not? After all, there is no 68k Macrumors forum right? :D

I guess @Gamer9430 is no longer organizing the challenges...or wasn't given the opportunity to.

Yes, I guess that I am no longer in charge of organizing these. Not like I was asked by OP if he could take over doing these, let alone anyone else on this subforum... I'll just add this into my ever growing list of why I don't frequent this subforum anymore.

Hey, the fun of all the previous PPC-challenge trips won't ever fade ...
I think everybody here, who did take part in the past is greatful about your initiative to start and take care of the challenge.
It's a big compliment to the roots of the PPC-challenge, that the idea is carried on. Saying this as a father, who is proud to see my sons go one step further ...

I agree with you, I just feel like I should have been contacted by the OP or other interested parties about taking over the event. I don't have a problem with anyone else doing them, in fact, its great to see that there is still interest in doing it. I'm just a bit annoyed that I wasn't contacted about taking over running the challenges.

Sometimes the idea takes over and leaves anything else out of focus ...
So the upcoming challenge(s) would really miss a thing, if the old stager stay off! ;)

Due diligence and common sense, it's running out fast these days for some folks it seems!

I literally have to use an Intel Mac for work, but can avoid using my own Intel Macs. I will be doing basic with my PowerBook G4 (1.5GHz) running Tiger and my PowerMac G4 Gigabit Ethernet (1.3GHz) running Tiger.

Esp. when someone can't even spend 5 seconds on Google figuring out that a PowerBook 170 isn't even a PPC Mac, much less what the specs are...

I knew it wasnt a ppc mac. i knew it a 68k and i figured because there was an option for machines with os's older than 8.6 that it would fit within the guidelines

Glad to see this back again. :)

I'll be doing Basic, with some dabbling in Mac OS 9 during the week! I'm planning to use any of my PowerPC Macs that I feel like, but notably this time around, my newest 12" PowerBook G4 seems to be up to the tasks lately to help with internet duties. My personal goal for this time is to take some camcorder footage of my adventures during the week, and edit the video on one of these PowerPCs with iMovie. :)

Since the 68k topic came up can someone give me the rundown on the Powerbook 520? I'm watching one on ebay. Were they considered good in their day? Decent to play around with or complete garbage?
