I just noticed this vertical darkish line on the left side of my XDR that stretches from the top to the bottom of the display. The line is about an inch and a half wide and is completely straight. While the right side of the screen certainly has some vignetting, there is not the same visible line.

I can only see the line on greyish or blue backgrounds. I actually noticed it while zoomed into the sky on a large panorama image I was editing.

Interestingly, from reviewing the other images posted in this thread, I think I can see a similar line in exactly the same place showing on some forum members' screens. However, given these are just photographs, it's hard to tell.

What are your thoughts? Does this look particularly bad to your eyes?

I am considering (although dreading) going through the replacement process now.

Does it go away at higher brightness like 50%?

I have all sort of noise/crap at 1 bars, they go away at 3 bars. My XDR is circa Mid 2019, so it has a ton of hours already.

Unfortunately, I can still see the line when the screen brightness is turned all the way up. It's not as bad, but it is still there.

Thats normal Its Apple quality. When u replace its 50/50 that u will get a better one or worst one.
 
I'm a few weeks short of my 1 year anniversary with my nano texture XDR, and I have to say, this whole thread was eye-opening for me. I remember the day I plugged it in, I felt like what I call "splotchy" banding of dark areas was just par for the course for the nano texture itself. But I think it's for sure a problem with the local dimming zones. I will contact Apple and see about getting it exchanged.

I does sell my XDR and own now 2x 42 Inch LG OLED C2. A way better and cheaper way to go!

Update: About four days before my one year [included] AppleCare expired, I took it in to the closest Apple Retail Store (Apple Support didn't have an option for me to ship this to them, alas), and the technician (RIP Genius Bar) said they would order the replacement part (which he called a "panel") and would try to replace the panel in-store. This seemed sketchy to me, as the idea of removing the panel from its current Jony Ive hermetically sealed home against the aluminum enclosure must be a particularly precarious endeavor. I mentioned that I just figured they'd replace the entire display, to which the technician admitted they may just do, if they don't think they can get it back together to a good as new state. I'm really hoping they just replace the display. I know I would never be happy if I could see panel gaps or otherwise evidence that the panel had been separated from the housing at some point. (As a point of contrast, during the pandemic, I restored a Titanium PowerBook with NOS replacement parts I found on ebay. That was tedius, but doable, but Apple's manufacturing has changed in the past 20 years, and in a good way, generally.)

First had wonky glass, a dead pixel and glue poking out the side of the glass. 2nd dirty screen effect and dead pixels. 3rd more glue and gaps between glass and alu, and dead pixels. 4th no glue issues, glass about 1mm off and dirty screen.

Surely Apple are losing money on this screen with so many replacements from customers.

Strange, I have four myself and not a single one had any significant issues. Two are the nano and two are the normal.

I'm on my second one, and it still has the banding. It's somewhat less than the first panel. I am thinking of trying one last time, as I have a few weeks left on the 90-day replacement window.

Hey you Mr. four XDR Displays... I've recently found that my displays have had a significant color shift.. they dont look identical anymore at all. The black levels on one are really off... Have you ever tried to calibrate one of your displays? And if so, how did you do it? I can not find a specialist with the documented compatible devices for 15k $ each in my area... :(

I've never heard of any issues with the non-nano. My one nano shows some subtle variation but it's nothing really objectionable and it's pretty typical for any type of matte display I've ever owned. I suspect the problem is just the difficulty in getting a perfectly-surfaced matte finish given that I've never seen anyone mention it on a normal non-nano display.

FWIW, I also have 6 of the 27" Studio displays at my office in use by employees and four of those are the nano texture. None of them show any issues either.

Hmm. The two I use side by side still appear identical. I haven't done any calibration, so I can't comment there. My black levels looks fine. Have you verified all of the firmware updates are applied on both and match? And have you tried unplugging it and leaving it unplugged for 2-3 minutes? In my case one time about two years ago I had to do that to force a firmware update and I think it basically serves as a "hard reset."
 
Mine have all been non-nano textured. I ran an hour of a 'dead pixel fix' flashing screen to see if that would help and actually it has somewhat. The DSE is less noticeable, but certainly still there. It's a shame about the 3rd unit I received because other than the dead pixels the panel itself was perfectly uniform. Just with black dots right in the middle of the screen.

Damn, I wonder if QC has dropped since the early units were made. My first two are from the launch and the other two are both at least two years old now.

It's really blown my mind because I've been buying Macs for home and work for 20 years, never experienced anything like it. Several iMacs, MacBooks, cinema/thunderbolt displays, iPhones, iPads. You name it, no issues. I've been to a few Apple stores to check out their XDRs and they're totally fine. I think something's up with production this year. I'm going to stick with this unit and see if the DSE gets worse. I'll be getting AppleCare+ too as I don't want a horror story down the line if something were to go south.

Mhhhh need to check! I noticed it when the screensaver was running side by side and looked veryyy differently..

Make sure both displays are set to the same profile, too. You can have them on different color profiles and that will obviously make things look different, although I assume you've already eliminated this as an issue.
