Purchased New MBP. Will Return Because of Potential Flaws

a friend of mine directed me to this website, and i have to admit that its a wealth of information about macs. i was going to be a new mac user, with a new MBP. I recently purchased it from my neighborhood apple store, but after my friend showed me this website, i realised how bad these macbook pro machines are. the forums are filled with people having tons of problems with the machine.

i also read somewhere that 50% of these machines will have lots of defects. my macbook pro has been running fine without any issues for a week, but i am scared that if a problem comes up, i wont be able to return it. so i am thinking of returning it right now, and buy it when the problems have been fixed by apple.

a mac using friend of mine told me that apple computers are really of high quality, and the users wont have to bother with issues that PC users face... since macs are pretty fault tolerant.... well, it seems that apple has skipped out on this one. He insists that i keep the machine because its not exibhiting any issues, but after paying 3000 bucks, I dont want to deal with several issues after 14days...

so can anyone please tell me when would the next version of the macbook pros be released so that i can buy it then?

Unless you bought the MBP within the last 14 days I think you'll have trouble returning it if there are no problems, unless you're willing to lose money paying the re-stock fee.

If your MBP has no problems now, just enjoy using it.

You only hear about so many problems on this site because people are more vocal about their problems rather than how good their product is...

You're going to return a laptop because some people here have had problems with theirs? If yours is fine, keep it--I REALLY doubt that 50% are defective, Apple sells thousands of these things to people who never post in forums. Either way, you have a warranty for a year if something happens after 2 weeks.

There is a huge potential for a problem to come up... since 50% of the macbook pros have issues.

I purchased it last week, so its still within 14 days- hence the urgency to set my mind on returning it before time expires...

The 50% is a completely made up number by someone on the forums and is complete bull. It is much closer to 10% if even that much. Also, all of the "major" problems people claim to have are visible from day one, they don't show up later, so if you don't have problems now your computer doesn't have problems.

There is no safe time in technology. If it developes "potential flaws" you'll get it fixed under warranty. Thats the way it works, IF things get broken you fix them.

Now thats what I call as the top quality, grade A, prime cut, pure bullcrap pulled off by someone.

I have been using my MBP for quite a while (close to 2months), and its the flawless machine I've ever owned. Listen to you Macintosh using friend. Keep the machine if it is working fine.

Frist: I highly doubt these figures you're quoting (source?).

Second: I bought a DVD-RW drive two months ago. It recently stopped writing discs.
But thankfully, you have a one year warranty.
So, if you're MBP has issues, you can easily have it fixed. I really don't share you're concern. The MBP is a wonderful machine and you're going to love it. Keep it.

Besides, if the number of 50% faulty MBPs was true, Apple would have to start a massive call-back programme. I'm sure if that was the case, we'd all have already heard about it.

It is much closer to 10% if even that much.

Impossible to say with any conviction. Much more educated and conservative estimates of machines with far less problems than this batch were estimated at between 15-20% failure rate. On most consumer electronics, 10-12% is apparently quite a good (low) figure for failure rates.

I doubt it's 50%, but I think it's way above 10%. The number of problems people are having with SR MBPs - even for these forums - is way above normal.

However, to the OP, if you haven't had any problems and you've had your machine for a week, then I do agree that to worry is pointless. Think yourself lucky!

Keep your laptop if it's running fine. If you want to protect against against potential flaws, buy Applecare and you will be set for 3 years.

These MBPs are awesome machines.

I think the consumer reports survey showed about 16% repair in the first year. But seriously, to return one based on potential future problems? Sounds silly, verging on stupid, to me. Most problems people are having are out of the box, so just be happy and enjoiy it all. Please, we don't need more problems here!

As far as the original question goes, no one knows when the next MacBook Pros are going to be coming out. This is really your only gauge for determining when a new product will be released.

That being said I think you are nuts for a returning the computer if it is working without any problems. Just because people have problems doesn't mean you will. You also need to provide a link to where you read that 50% of the computers are having problems. I think it is a made up number from some upset person just wishing to vent.

Forums are no place to gauge the number of computers with problems, everyone and their dog posts here whenever the tiniest thing pops up. Some people will have their computer for years and never have a single issue.

You do realize that there are over one hundred thousand people on this forum, right? So if any product is released its going to seem like there are many people that have problems with it. I have a rev A MacBook pro, probably therev that had the most problems and mine is fine after almost a year. Just enjoy the computer, don't let reading forums scare you away from enjoying your purchase.

keep the machine, most of the problems people are having are coming up in the first week so you can assume that there are no inisal defects. However, if something happens to come up, apple is really pretty good about replacing it.

There appear to be a shortage of the SRs due to supply bottlenecks of LED backlights.

If you return it, you stop worrying about what might never happen.

Somebody, who might have been waiting weeks for an SR gets one more quickly, and one that appears to be without any of the known problems, at a refurb price.

Sounds fine to me.

Hah! Absolute truth.

If your laptop is working fine, enjoy it. Potential problems are all around you, but you shouldn't let that faze you. Like other forum members have been saying, the failure rate for MBPs is far lower than you would assume just from reading threads voicing disappointment with the MBP.

Honestly dude, I'm almost speechless. You say yourself your machine has no problems - keep it. I'm not returning my car for fear of "future problems" because some folks have been complaining on the internets.

I just bought my 2.2ghz MBP SR last week and it works just fine. Enjoy your new machine and read forums less

I purchased a new MBP 3 weeks ago and not a single issue. As everyone is saying, things can go wrong, but that's with anything. Besides in a forum people tend to post complaints more than satisfied people.

I can understand your concerns!

You're paying a lot more money (than for a 15.4" Dell) and you want it to be perfect.

We are told that Apple Macs are expensive (and the warranty too) because they only use the best components and the design feel-good-factor and of course OS X.

There are obviously several issues around the new SR MBP - these will either be down to a batch problem in which case there is a beginning and an end to that batch or a "patch" problem which will be sorted with a firmware update in due course. Anything more general that can't be sorted out with a firmware update then they would have to make a recall!

I feel sorry for those with problems in the meantime but if yours is ok and you bought it because you love it - then keep it!

No kidding -- Apple store employees can't buy them via EPP yet.

The least the guy could do is return it, mentioning that there's no problem with it. That'll give the employees at that Apple store a chance to buy it at "open box" price (minus their usual in-store discount), making it pretty dang close to the EPP price.
