Purchasing a C2D MBP? What are you upgrading from?

Ordered my 15"/2.33/160/glossy last night :D... delivery on 11/14

I just thought it would be interesting to find out what everyone has been living with while waiting for the C2D Macbook Pro's to come out. Maybe we can have a little contest to see who's been suffering the most and for the longest time ;). Replies must be realistic and honest... if you say you've been living off of an Apple Newton or a IIE for all these years waiting for a C2D you're full of it (however if there were such a person... they'd be my hero).

I'll start out by saying that I've chosen to live for the past 1.5 years (or however long its been since the Intel switch was announced) with a 12" 600mhz iBook G3... with a 20gb hard drive. Thank God I have it maxed out with 640mb of ram or I wouldn't even have been able to run Tiger. I believe my laptop scored something around an 8 on the xbench :D (and that's with maxed out ram).

Anywho, I'd be interested to see if there are any other mentally insane people like myself who are so obsessed with saving money that they're willing to live in the desolate wasteland of obsoleteness until they're true dream machine comes out.

from a borrowed PowerBook G4 / 400MHz / 256MB RAM / 15" / 10GB HDD / MacOSX 10.3.9 that took 5 minutes to stop slowing down safari while opening "about this mac"
to a MPB C2D / 2.33GHz / 2GB RAM / 15" matte / 120GB HDD

Nice choice of machine, mine has same specs! 160G HD?

I've had the same laptop for 3 years, ibook G4 12" 800MHz 640mb RAM and Panther, it was the first G4 ibook, bought as soon as they brought it out - no way I was going to buy a G3 when the powerbooks had G4's :D

actually my ibook has served me well, it still works great, infact i just got 2 new batteries for it thanks to the recall! I just want to be able to do more image editing and play the odd game otherwise it'd still be fine!

You must have got you ibook second hand 18mnths ago?

Finally giving up on Windows, Microsoft, Sony, etc....hopefully forever...

My current system: Sony Vaio PCG-GRT170 laptop - about 3 years old, and about 3 weeks away from completely and totally dying on me...

My first Mac ever: 17" Macbook Pro, Core 2 Duo 2.33GHz, 160GB 5400 RPM HD, Glossy screen, 2GB RAM @ 667 MHz...

I can't wait!!! Unfortunately, I have to (until mid-November :( )

Hope it's worth it...I'm hoping to have much more success with it ripping my many hundreds of vinyl records to mp3 than I have with my Sony Vaio...not to mention not worrying about spyware/malware, not having to reboot daily, etc...

Happy to be here!!!

My current computer is a Powerbook 1.25GHz 15", which was my first Mac. This PB is going to my daughter (replacing her iBook) as soon as my MBP arrives.

While I rarely need Windows, I do have to test web pages against Internet Explorer on a regular basis - and having an Intel processor will make that much easier. Virtual PC is better than nothing, but it is so slow that I found I got faster results running VMware on a Linux box, tunneled through an ssh network connection!

Yea... I did buy it second hand, as soon as i heard about the intel transition I sold my 17" PB and entered the dark ages.

i am upgrading from nothing. in other words, i am a computer moocher who has used whatever he could get his hands on for . . . five years? before then, i had a girlfriend who owned several computers and was always kind enough to let me use one. after that, any time i've needed to use a computer (i am a freelance writer, every once in a while), i squat on a certain friend's floor and bang away at a laptop. i have used macs and PCs, and have no real preference.

yet i have this dream of being a rock and roll star, so for the good of my band, i have decided to buy a macbook pro with some of the ridiculous money (ridiculous compared to what i'd previously possessed) earned at my current day job (for which the rock band is an escape plan), so i can use garage band to record vocal and guitar tracks to send to the bassist and drummer so we can cut down practice time by about 75%. practice studios in tokyo cost a high hourly rate, and it takes a long time to show your rhythm section a new song enough times so they know where all the dynamics are. so garage band and a macbook pro with 3GB of RAM will very much help me record and tweak multiple guitar parts while also mixing in vocals and drums and bass for the other two guys (the bassist also owns a mac) to listen to and/or tweak.

i chose the 17" C2D MBP because it was the newest and biggest, and i'll be damned if the first computer i ever buy isn't top of the line.

i also want video editing (iMovie) so i can make idiotic videos to host on my website as a hobby. basically, i want to be as cool as the "i'm a mac" guy in those commercials, except without the dirty-looking facial hair. when people ask me what i'm doing this weekend i want to shrug and say "maybe making a movie or recording a song or blogging, making a website, i don't know, nothing in particular?!"

this woman in my office is really proud of me for "switching" to apple, and i kind of roll my eyes at the idea. i tell her, you know, there's not a stamp on my passport that says "PC user"--and she says, well, you never owned a mac before, right? and i say, well, no. i never owned a PC, either--and she says, well, that makes you a "switcher", anyway.

whatever!!

either way, this computer i use at work (it's a WinXP mutt) sometimes makes me want to light something on fire.

now!! if only apple would be nice and make the 17" available already, we'd be in business. i want to just walk into the apple store in ginza and say, "hello!!" and then they'll look at me and say, "hello!!" right back.

the guy in the ginza store told me to write my phone number on this card; said he'd call when th C2D 17"s come in. He passed me over to another guy; both guys had been practicing their english on me. The other guy tries to tell me, "If you like maybe the regular Core Duo, we can sell to your right away today?" and the other guy -- the manager -- barked at him, in Japanese, "LOOK at this guy. He KNOWS he wants the melon."

you see, "melon" is japanese apple-geek slang for "merom". ("merom" is spelled "me-ro-mu" in japanese, and "melon" is "me-ro-n" -- so yes.)

I believe the "up to 7x" for video encoding, anyway. I measured side by side ffmpeg encoding from mine to 2.16 MBP CD, and it was almost exactly 4x difference. Looking fwd to that speed, for sure: my iPod Video library still needs filling. ;) I've been doing the encoding using MP4, because of speed difference. Now, that'll be moot and I can save a couple hundred MB by using H-264.

Though I may still decide to go for the 200GB hd. I can imagine needing lots of space, but I'm not sure about the speed.

Why? Previous macbook pro was 200% crap, whine, won't sleep,ticking noise,... grrrr! Hope this revision takes away all my problems.
