Update- so I've had the Zagg visionguard on all week now and I've noticed a major improvement. I even purposely increased my phone usage and still didn't get anywhere near as much eyestrain as before. Maybe some mild irritation after a while, but not enough to trigger any headaches. Unfortunately though I cracked it lifting up one corner to get a dust particle out, so today I took it off and put on a plain glass one as sort of a final "test". Sure enough, my eyes started jitterbugging after a few minutes. Feel a headache starting right now actually 😂 Back on my 8+ until a replacement arrives from Zagg.

So... yeah. I'm sure it won't work for everyone, but it's something to try.
That's great news. I guess if blue light has an effect on you you've solved part of the issue for your usage.

As Night Shift mode was designed to reduce blue light does this not help you?

Perhaps the Zagg screen filter is reducing the glaring light (feels like a torch being blasted into the eyes) emitted from the OLED?

On paper yes, but Apple’s contrast claims are usually not entirely accurate for a LCD. If that were the case every phone since iPhone 6 would have basically the same display, when I’ve noticed they do typically improve it every year whether it’s color accuracy or warmth — the current OLED displays are incredibly warm, which I prefer but some users may find to be yellowish.

I even noticed the black level on iPhone 7 Plus being superior to iPhone 8 Plus, which was odd and measurements back up. Check Notebookcheck for a more in-depth comparison.

I did try night shift, but it makes everything a bit TOO orangey even when I slide it over to less warm. Just me being picky I suppose. I think you're right about the glare though, my eyes are ridiculously sensitive after the surgery so that would make sense.

Have you tried iPhone SE?

My only question really is why they put a better display on this phone than they did on iPhone 11, but I think I could answer that since the main differentiation between the standard iPhone 11 and the Pro models was the display.

Yup, I have one :) Excellent phone, but I prefer bigger screens so I usually only use it if I'm going to be out somewhere for a while and can't carry a lot of stuff with me, if that makes any sense. I definitely agree that it has an absolutely gorgeous display though, if the Zagg hadn't worked for me and I didn't have an 8+ I'd be happy with the SE as my main phone.

iPhone SE is the hidden gem in Apple’s iPhone lineup. I traded in my 8+ so this is the first new iPhone I’ll be able to keep in over three years.

Just to make myself even more satisfied, I compared the display of iPhone SE to Notebookcheck’s measurements for every Apple LCD released in 2020 and iPhone SE is surprisingly the best overall. It also isn’t using any PWM unlike the previous-generation iPad Pro and even some of the M1 Mac’s at an extremely high rate. I will hold onto this phone and prefer it to the iPad Air for that reason alone.

326ppi is perfectly adequate for a LCD and according to Notebookcheck technically sharper than an OLED at 458ppi due to the way sub-pixels are arranged. There would be a noticeable diminishing benefit at 458ppi in my opinion, but for now this is a surprisingly nice phone.

Now that I’m starting to use it more often I am starting to see the drawbacks to iPhone SE vs a flagship iPhone.

The display can feel cramped for typing and causes me to make more mistakes than usual even single-handed, and the battery needs to be charged throughout the day otherwise it may not last a day of heavy use. I think during the honeymoon period a new iPhone feels better since it has fresh oleophohic coatings, etc. I’m beginning to enjoy iPhone SE less admittedly.

But the point was to reduce phone usage. I am still slightly tempted to order an iPhone 12 Pro even if it would be smarter to wait for iPhone 13 especially since it’s about three months away and the PWM rate may be improved. iPhone 12 Pro Max definitely gave me headaches and migraines so it’s likely iPhone 12 Pro would as well despite having a slightly different PWM implementation.

When I try the displays side by side in store, SE always wins for me in terms of eye strain. I prefer the aesthetics of the 12 mini (colors, squared-off edges, size, weight), but the display and functionality (touch id) of the SE. If I had to buy a phone today, it would probably be the SE even though I know the battery life isn't great and will probably get worse with the next version of iOS.

Who knows, Apple may surprise us with something on the iPhone front next week.

I doubt they’d announce a new iPhone at WWDC. Unless you mean a flicker-free Accessibility option coming to iOS 15. ;)

My last bit of hope was for the SE Plus to be announced in April (that was the rumor). Well, it was speculated by numerous sources that the SE Plus will be a 6.1” punch hole design. The only issue is it won’t be out until 2023. The iPhone 11 lcd somehow bothers my head just like the oled models (dithering?) so now I’m in a bad spot with an aging and cracked 8+. It looks like my only option is the current SE with a smart battery case, but that’s a lot of money for something I don’t even want. Could be forced to go back to Android.

Anyone else following the new SE Plus? I know I wouldn’t be if I could use any of the IPhone 12 models, so I’m sure interest is extremely minor on here.

I’ll tell you this much (which I apologize is of no help)… if Apple stops releasing an iPhone with a home button, my mom will never be able to make a phone call again. Or use the phone at all.

I hate to say it, but I’m kind of over iPhone SE.

It was a worthwhile experiment that put me more in the moment and I think I’ll carry that into my future iPhone experiences. How often the average person grabs their phone and how frequently distracted they are by it starts to become taken for granted as smartphones have become normalized.

This is odd for me to type since at 12 years old (I said 13 previously — I was actually younger) I became one of the very first early adopters of an iPhone, and subsequently became one of the most enthusiastic users.

For all of the benefits of iPhone SE as a lifestyle choice, there are definitely drawbacks: typing on a smaller display leads to more errors and typos and is less comfortable, the reduced pixel density has become more apparent over time, and I wouldn’t mind having a better camera. Not to mention that the battery barely lasted a day of light usage during a New York City trip. Battery life has become one of my biggest gripes, which isn’t necessarily an issue in itself since it causes me to limit my usage but we all know that it isn’t fun having a dead phone battery.

Which brings me to the future: I don’t mind holding onto iPhone SE for a few more months and waiting for iPhone 13, but I’m not overly optimistic that PWM will be fixed on the new models. Currently I have no iPhone option to upgrade. I still wouldn’t be able to use iPhone 12 Pro Max without enduring 24/7 headaches/migraines. It would be nice not to be left out on the next upgrade cycle: I might even go back to annual upgrades if they offer a flicker-free OLED display.

^ Can't fault you for that since just from reading the reviews, I don't think the SE2 is a great phone. It's decent if you absolutely need something, but very unlikely to provide a satisfying experience.

I think for those of us that are sensitive to these kinds of things, we are pretty much screwed moving forward. I'm having trouble even with a new M1 MBA that I just bought. Struggling to find settings that won't cause me headaches. I could go back to my 2019 MBA but that has click-and-wait performance. So basically no good solution. It's the same on the phone front. In some sense it may be good since it will force me to spend less time online.

What do you think iFixit is? All they do is slap their logo on commodity parts.
They don’t even know how to ship products, I’d buy one just about anywhere else before relying on iFixit. Their website is garbage as well. Terrible terrible company.

The Sony Xperia 1 III has got my attention.....a newly released phone that is OLED but has an unusual profile. A long 21:9 aspect ratio. Will try to get eyes on this thing the next few days if I can find one and see if maybe its profile might somehow help with PWM. Expensive phone but not going to be picky since I need a new high end smartphone in the coming months.
