Check this out. Here we are hoping for a solution to our problem and possibly micro-LED being the savior.....when this article and several others out today suggest Apple is looking to move everything, including iPads and MacBooks, to OLED.

While the new 8 plus is a good deal, especially as I can get a further discount with cashback - I think your right and know me well on this matter. Will book in for a battery and come back for the dance in Sept/Oct. Then if that doesn't work out, wait for the SE 3 again. 🤦‍♂️

"Patience is not the ability to wait, but the ability to keep a good attitude while waiting. Good things come to those who wait, Better things come to those who try. ... Patience is learned through waiting."

Now I just have to talk myself off the ledge with the iPad Pro pre-orders tomo.........
I wonder if the 12.9” iPad Pro will use PWM. My guess is that with the mini-LED display it will be at a rate of around 720Hz.

This was my dream a few years ago.

I feel the same way, but I wouldn’t put any hope in the fact one 12 model will work when you know the one you tried didn’t
Just wishful thinking. I wouldn’t be the first to try, but it is better to just hold off for iPhone 13. I know deep down my preference is for the Max size anyway. Maybe at this point I’ll try every new iPhone until Apple finally releases a flagship phone that PWM-sensible users can use.

iPhone 12 Pro Max was the perfect phone for me. I find myself frustrated on a daily basis lately since I don’t want an iPad, I don’t want to go back to iPhone 11, and iPhone SE is fine but I’m starting to feel like this isn’t the way my iPhone upgrade experience should be going and that I’m wasting money no matter how much cheaper it is than iPhone 12.

As for the iPad it’s still made redundant by the Plus-sized phones for me, and doubly so for the Max size. I was enjoying my iPad Air until I tried iPhone 12 Pro Max and it started collecting dust. (Which I knew would end up happening.) It’s just better in every way, and I have no issue using the 6.7” display single-handed which is greatly preferred as it makes life much easier. For example, I can sit on the couch and pet my dog or multitask in a million different ways whereas I can’t do that with a proper tablet. Also while the LCD display on the iPad is great OLED is so much more enjoyable for consuming media.

Part of me still wishes I could order an iPhone 12 Pro Max but unless there has been some sort of adjustment (just unfounded speculation) there’s simply no way to use it without getting headaches. It’s not possible to leave it at a specific brightness level or to even use an unofficial jailbreak workaround because a flicker-free setting doesn’t exist in any capacity.

I think people who dislike the XR/11 for its style and 828p resolution and want an 8+ style phone are gonna be disappointed. Can't see apple bringing back the 8+ form factor in 2023, I think they'll just discontinue the XR in Sept 2021, run the 11 till Spring 2023 and then replace it with an SE Plus which'll be based off the 11. Could be wrong on this however, especially with the rumour which suggests there'll be an SE 3 in 2022 with the same form factor as the SE 2020.

I don’t want an 8+ style phone. I wouldn’t be overly excited to see a proper SE Plus, and I wouldn’t be happy waiting for the next SE only to get an iPhone XR/11 with 5G. I just want a flagship iPhone without PWM.

Does mini-led use PWM? Maybe there's a possibility of that being on the pro iPhone models within the next few years. Micro led is ofc a very long time away.

OLED should be technically superior to mini-LED, but I could see them switching for other reasons such as longevity. (Maybe reduced cost?)

The answer is we don’t know yet. It technically could, and my speculation is that it will be at a rate of 720Hz. If it doesn’t it would be great news because that would mean the display team designed a new display and opted not to use PWM.

I’ve spoken to someone at Apple and they’ve once again indicated that there’s no limit to iPhone returns. They are willing to still generate a return for iPhone SE if I wanted to try iPhone 12 Pro.

It is slightly annoying since as far as cost goes once trade-in values are factored in it would only be around $100 more to keep the iPhone 12 Pro until iPhone 13 comes out. (Scratch that — my math was bad on that since iPhone SE comes out to $20 to upgrade after my 8+ trade-in and its current value is factored in.) The Pro did seem slightly better than the Max, but I can’t rule out issues.

I think just having the option of another day or two to decide is going to make me more satisfied with my decision to possibly keep iPhone SE.

Edit: as long as I’m sure I prefer it to my 8+ the most reasonable option might be to keep iPhone SE, then when iPhone 13 comes out I’ll try whatever the best model is as far as PWM goes. After skipping iPhone XS and iPhone 11 Pro I’m going to try every new OLED generation until there’s one that doesn’t cause headaches.

It’s a shame you won’t consider android. I personally was android for life until I got my 8+. I see the good in both of them. iPhones are way smoother, but there’s plenty to like on android that iOS will never allow. At this point I really don’t think pwm will ever be eliminated. Maybe not ever, but for sure in the near future. Micro led is our only hope, and if that uses pwm I think it’s game over

I’m too reliant on the Apple ecosystem. I wouldn’t be able to use iCloud on Android, and my preference is Apple Music which does have an app but is still better on iOS. Also my Apple Watch would lose a lot of functionality if it wasn’t paired to an iPhone.

I do have to say iPhone SE is a nice phone for the money. More so a year ago, but it still holds up in 2021. It is a little annoying seeing that it’s possible to get a more modern bezel-less design with multiple cameras on the Android side for less money, but iOS is what makes the iPhone experience. I did consider the Galaxy S21 recently, especially since the 8+ trade-in is $350, but I just don’t see myself using it.

Even in the android arena, there are very few lcd phones that aren’t budget lines. Hell, I got a $399 oled android phone like 7 years ago. Apple is always way late, which is fine. I will say that typing to me just never feels right on android. On iOS it’s perfect

A budget iPhone may be better than a flagship Android for the right person.

My only real complaint with iPhone SE is that the camera isn’t great, but I won’t use it much anyway. iPhone 12 Pro Max has a significantly better camera system.

I want a new phone. A used mint 8+ goes for $300 or so after how many years? Lol

I think the poster above is spot on. The se plus (if it exists) will be a poor mans xr. I would happily take the 8+ body with the newest processor and 5-6gb of ram. I don’t take pics or watch videos on here.

I’d sell you my red 64GB 8+ with case and accessories. You’d probably want to replace the battery for $49, but otherwise it’s for the most part in mint condition. Let me know because otherwise I’ll probably just trade it to Apple.

Oh I’m ok, my 8+ is still ticking but thanks man. I have new phone itch, and nothing but a new phone can fix it

I get that. The 8+ is still perfectly modern (it has wireless charging, True Tone, etc.) but I also want to upgrade to a new phone even if it’s only a minimal upgrade like iPhone SE.

I’ve noticed an interesting phenomenon: the longer I use iPhone SE the less tiny the display feels. Now my 8+ feels massive — almost too large. It’s as if it’s possible to adjust to any display size and enjoy it almost as much as any other size. This phone is perfectly fine for games, media, etc.

I have found I’m more likely to type single-handed, but that’s also not necessarily an issue as evidenced by the posts here. Maybe more fatiguing so I’ll need a break more often.

In practice (actual use) I do feel the display is an upgrade from the 8+. Even 720p content looks deceptively sharp. Whites are brighter and blacks are ever so darker. Colors pop more.

The battery is going to have to be charged more often (it’s at 18% right now, I could run it down multiple times over the course of a day) so I may have to pick up a wireless charging pad for my car. Besides the battery and the camera it’s not a major compromise. I’d sidegrade to iPhone 11 but I’m making a point not to switch to the modern design until there’s an OLED iPhone that’s usable.

I’d suggest the Apple 7 battery case. It feels great in the hand and adds some juice.

As for the size, my 6.7” android feels way better in my hand than my iPhone now. It’s bigger but also more narrow. On this forum, my 8+ can fit the first 7 threads on the screen at once. My android fits 10. It makes me even more bitter, because all I ever wanted was a big iPhone with a 4000mah battery. That’s the 12 pro max.

Well I got my new battery fitted today. Two visits to the store to drop off then collect and while the work on my phone went smoothly, standing in the store was painful. So much new shiney Apple tech with all those huge light boxed graphics - I wanted it all! Those 12 series phone look so good and really are the iphone I've always wanted. I avoided interacting with any of them due to covid situation and because why torture myself further!

The technician who worked on my 7 Plus remarked I'd done well to keep my phone in great condition and that there were no issues with any components - also that my phone could last for years still. I said I'd happily take a 12 Pro Max right now if I could use it - which led into a conversation about why I couldn't. Unsurprisingly the technician had never heard of PWM or the issues it can cause. This seems to be the case with all staff I've spoken with over the years. Then she mentioned that Apple will service their products for 5 years, so I guess I'm on my last battery for my 7 Plus....😩

I have zero confidence that the 13 series will bring the changes we need as Samsung will not be supplying better displays than the one in their flagship S21 Ultra this year and that has terrible PWM apparently (notebookcheck, reddit and Samsung forums).

I'm now tempted to scratch my itch for a new phone by ordering a selection of Android phones to see if I can use any of them - and it needs to be a flagship. I'd start with a One Plus if they had better return arrangements. Samsung would have been my first choice as I can get a top tier device, watch, earbuds etc - but they are the culprits of the current low PWM numbers so that's a bust. A Google Pixel maybe the better option but they don't have an eco system or any desktop backup software.

I've also been considering an ipad all afternoon due to the preorder of the new pros going live today, but dates have slipped hard into July 😳 so there's no way of satisfy the new purchase demon on my back.

Have you considered iPhone SE? I do have to say Apple put an excellent LCD display on it as far as color and contrast goes. Maybe you could supplement it with an iPad.

The 12.9” Pro could be almost as good as an OLED, although we have no idea what rate of PWM the mini-LED display will have yet. I’m assuming 720Hz and hoping none, but a 12.9” tablet is too large for me. I’d hope to get mini-LED on a MacBook Pro.

SE 2020 is nice and solid but I can't give up a large screen and battery. If my iPhone was lost to my today I would buy one over a used 8 plus.

I'm looking forward to the redesigned Macbook Pro's later this year, current rumours look good and if the display is mini led it will be a day one.

Any chance in hell Apple would release another phone the size of original SE (2016)? I just bought refurbished 128 GB version of it to upgrade from my 32 GB, as storage became annoying on my current phone, but unfortunately some buttons were't working and in the process of repair they placed in some clunky 3rd party parts and have damaged the antenna, so I decided to return it. I honestly think there is a market for that size of phone, I know 3 other people who are struggling to upgrade from the same phone, as there is nothing comparable on the market at the moment. I love the design as well.

I heard that the 12 mini, their smallest phone, isn't selling too well, but I think that is in part due to the fact that it doesn't target any specific consumers. It's too big for people used to the form factor of iPhone 5s/5c/SE (all of which I've owned), but it's probably too small for people used to larger phones now. I refuse to compromise on convenience of smaller form factor, even though battery might be a problem to fit, if they could do it all the way back then, why not now?

If anyone knows where to still get a 128 GB 2016 model from non-dodgy suppliers in the UK/Europe, that would be helpful as well :)

freakanzy, I highly doubt that Apple will ever release a phone the size of the original SE/5S again. Your best bet is the iPhone 12 mini at this point. I suggest you actually try it out in an Apple store for yourself, rather than just reading comments about it. It’s in between the size of the SE1 and SE2, has the exact same design as the SE with flat edges, but with a stunning bezel less 476 ppi XDR OLED 5.4” screen. It also has all the premium features of the larger iphone 12. Honestly you are not going to get anything better than this if you want a small iPhone, apart from the SE2 maybe. The battery lasts 2 days for me sometimes. You said you refuse to compromise on convenience of a smaller form factor, then the 12 mini is your answer.
