WOW...this JB was awesome...easiest one ever. FWIW, here's what I did.

Connected my iPhone 3g JB 2.1 to iTunes (newest version) in Windows. Updated to 2.2 through iTunes. Ran Quickpwn, followed the instructions, selected the Cydia and Installer option. Worked perfectly. All my old settings and music are still on the device. Just have to add the JB apps and settings.

That's how it's been for the last few updates. I take it you don't care about a software unlock?

I don't know what you guys are doing but according to BigBoss you shouldn't be straight up updating to 2.2 (if your phone was currently jailbroken 2.1) and instead should be "restoring" your iPhone as new using the 2.2 firmware first. I believe the reason he describes is that doing an update doesn't recover your 500 MB partition used for your previous jailbreak, thus leaving you with 500 MB less space each time until you do a clean restore. My understanding was this:

1. Sync to iTunes and make a backup
2. Download 2.2 Firmware
3. Clean Restore using 2.2 Firmware
4. Jailbreak the phone using QuickPwn
5. Download and install SSH, 5 Icon Dock if you had it before.
5a. If you used aptbackup, install it now
6. Run aptbackup and get your Cydia installs back
7. Restore from previous jailbroken backup

These are I believe the appropriate and "safe" steps to follow when upgrading a jailbroken device...i'll follow this when i upgrade later tonight and see how it goes.

2 questions:

1) may sound very novice but what are the advantages of a soft unlock?

2) how do I keep my modified mobileinstallation file? do i have to get a whole new one for 2.2 and ssh it in?

2.2 firmware too?

I had 2.1 JB.

I just clicked "update" in iTunes. It updated the device and kept all my settings.

I am now running Quickpwn, went fine.

One 2.2 JB iPhone :D

I've got quickpwn downloaded and my phone is still runnning a jailbreaked 2.1......Do i need to download the 2.2 firmware too????

Once i have the needed downloads, do i just click update in itunes without restoring, then once it's updated, just quickpwn it again?

thanks

Yeah, I'm OK with not using software unlock.

In past JB's I built the custom firmware and took the long way. First time with Quickpwn and like I said, easy and worked great.

For those that are getting a failed message

For those that are getting a "Srry, Ihaz Failed" with a kitty picture when trying to create a custom restore file:

1) Go to Expert Mode
2) Under General, increase the root partition to 1000Mb.
3) Then select "Begin"

This should keep it from failing.

Is the new iTunes required for this update? I have to take a laptop and go wardriving for the updates as I'm on dialup at home. I hate downloading a few things, coming home to update and then seeing I forgot one thing and have to drive back out to get that.

Looking forward to this update for the podcast downloading, didn't think it would happen this soon, so happy. Hopefully people will post a few more steps of how they did it for us newbs who want to ask a million questions and have you hold our hands.

Anyways, off to do a little war driving, I'll check back!

Jailbreak 2G iPhone 2.2, any extra files needed?

Hey all!

I am currently on a 2G iPhone (first gen.) with 2.1 jailbreaked using quickpwn for windows. I would like to upgrade to jailbreak 2.2 but I have a few questions first:

I have to restore my iphone to 2.2 instead of hitting the update button, right? Or should I restore to 2.1 and then hit update to 2.2 in itunes?

Also, after I have 2.2 installed (but before running quickpwn), are there any other files I will need to download to complete the jailbreak? I believe I remember needing to do this with quickpwn 2.1...

I realize that its pretty soon after the release, but any help at all would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,
~Crandel

Please help this newbie. I would love to upgrade to 2.2 tonight but I am really confused as to which steps I should take. I used Pwnage Tool to jailbreak and unlock my iPhone 2G because I use T-Mobile. What steps and utilities should I use to take my iPhone up to 2.2 unlocked and jailbroken? Step by step directions would be very appreciated and I am not concerned about losing any existing data or apps on the phone.

Thanks

Ok here is my Sitrep....

Im an O2-UK contract payer so i want the Baseband update! and i also want to have a Jailbroken 2.2 iPhone! I also want to restore to original ipsw so i can go to the apple store and see if i can get some repairs to a "loose/slanty screen"...... So what the best thing for me to do.....?

Is it upgrade to 2.2 then take it to apple store if they tell me to get lost then quickpwn! or do i need to restore it before i take it to the store? Can i use QuickPwn on a late 2008 MacBook? is it only Pwnage tool that doesnt like late 2008 Macbooks?

Thanks

Nope, once you have updated to 2.2, you have updated your baseband and lowered your chance for unlock.

I don't know anything about what the dev team does to get into the baseband, or soft unlock a phone, but it seams to me that it is only a matter of time until they unlock the upgraded baseband, as they have with the previous one. People who buy their iPhones with 2.2 already installed need to have hope too.

Yeah, Cydia. :/

I launch Cydia, I get the screen to choose my filter, I choose Developer (I want to see all options) and then Cydia crashes. Anyone else have this issue?

yes. I've only been having problems with cydia a bit, kind of annoying. I am thinking about restoring my phone and then re-jailbreaking it.

I'm thinking I might need to do that too. :/

I have SSH installed and I was able to SSH to the phone, so one option I was thinking of was to manually delete Cydia and transfer the package again, if possible. I tried browsing the Pwnage Tool 2.2 for a copy of Cydia but I cannot seem to find it. I'll try more tomorrow morning. :)

Guys i used pwnge tool 2.2 and now when i reconnect to itunes it says, any help?

Did you make sure to use expert mode and untick the activate switch?

I'm kinda of curious as to what the baseband upgrade would be good for? I'm on ATT. But I would like to keep the possibility of selling my phone to more people when the next big thing comes out.

To follow up my own post, nobody really answered me so I got tired of waiting and just went for it. I upgraded in iTunes to 2.2 and then used Quickpwn to JB, it worked perfect! I was shocked to see that a lot of my previous JB mods were still intact and it was still unlocked. 2.2 is a lot snappier for me.

Actually untick the activate is the reason why I got that screen, i just went expert and increased the size to 1000 left it ticked and it worked without a hitch, now im running 2.2 on TMobile 3G

If you're going to use PwnageTool don't check Installer.app. It slows the entire iPhone interface just being installed.
