Im running a Dell 3007wfp-hc (30") and 2007fp (20"). The snow lasts no more than .1 sec, its not even 1 second. If I'm not looking straight at it I would miss it. Its hardly a fraction of a second for me.

As long as the OEM cards are doing it, then I should be fine :) I'm hoping new drivers will fix all this! I'd really like it to be much faster now :)

We Are Not Alone !!!

2 pages of people whose new Mac Pros wake to static.

Note that at least one reports that it is only on the MDP side....which is exactly how I get it, except I have a DVI where this would be.

Most of the posts are OEM 4870 cards.....some are GT120s.

Hopefully something we will see a driver/firmware fix for soon.

But nice to know it isn't due to some being flashed cards.

Rominator, thanks for the research and follow up. I don't experience the problem they do, mainly because my computer never sleeps.

I've only seen it happen maybe 3 times, and it happened during the middle of usage. It appeared for less than a split second, barely noticeable, but enough to make me think I wasn't crazy. It looks like the 30" ACD photo with the static screen for sure though.

Hoping 10.5.7 will make it scream even faster!

I have this exact same issue with my MBP 15" Unibody (9600GT). Statics on wake on the secondary display (Dell 19" FPW with MDP to DVI adapter). And i known at least one more case...

Seems to be a generic issue with the last Display Port Macs....

I think that snow comes if the HDCP Handshake hase gone bad :(

I have the same issues sometimes with my new MacMini, if I use a TFT MOnitor without HDCP Support, I don't have the snow problem.

I was looking at the Apple forums on the mouse jump issue...

Another affected user with an Apple OEM 4870 found the problem occured on the DVI port when connected to their selection of samsung and philips monitors. This was particularly interesting as the monitor I was using when I saw the issue was a doublesight display ds-245w which has a samsung panel at its heart.

@ zoppa: what brand monitor were you using???

Anyone else with samsung or philips monitors having problems on the DVI ports? If you have one of these could you do a quick test?

If this is a monitor brand thing then maybe a software fix in the drivers might solve it. This might explain why the issue isn't seen in XP (bootcamp).

LG L1952TQ and a Toshiba 37X3030D LCD TV, which was in standby, but connected

Another 1GB Sapphire 4870 Success!

After having a "fun" time with ASUS 1GB Dark Knight 4870 (note: do NOT get this card for flashing as it does not work at this time), I returned it and bought this card like several others in this thread. Did the same steps as clearly outlined here. Backed up the card's original ROM, then used ATIWinflash in Windows XP Pro SP3 (Bootcamp) to flash the card with the modified ROM. Works just fine in Windows and OS X!

Like everyone else, the card's only getting 2.5/GT in OS X, but hopefully that'll be remedied with newer drivers. We can hope. :)

Thanks to all for this incredibly helpful and enlightening thread! So fantastic to have this blazing fast card at an affordable price. I can only imagine what Apple will charge for "their" version when/if they get around to releasing it. $500? :D

Yeah, 10.5.7 can't come soon enough. I would love to solve the 2.5 link problem too.

I too am waiting eagerly for 10.5.7.

BTW...a guy named xsonicsomethingorother in the "Running 2 4870's in '09 Mac Pro" claims that a flashed XFX 4870 card is coming in at 5.0GTS. (While all of the other makers have switched to cheaper PCB with 3 wire fans, XFX still uses original Reference design)

He also claims some other cool stuff, namely having a 4870X2 running in OSX as well.

I am eagerly awaiting his return with more details.

Is anyone reading this running a flashed XFX 4870 on a Nehalem? Would love some confirmation on the 5.0 GTs thing.

(If I wanted to date myself...I would mention that in my youth, a 5.0 GT was a BAD car)

If I understand this correctly, using the directions provided, the Sapphire card linked from Newegg, and all the appropriate drivers that I could upgrade the again failing x1900 XT on my Mac Pro1,1(2007)?

Seriously, I am tired of dragging this thing to the Apple store for video card replacements.

That's the theory. I have the 1,1 MP and I'll be giving it a shot as soon as I get the card and the power cables. I plan on coming back to give an update as well as including any weird steps I needed to take to get the whole thing to work.

skyhand,

Can you use 2 DVI monitors simultaneously? Thanks for the info.

No love on the dual DVI in OS X. Works for approximately 10 seconds, then mouse movement ceases and the Mac restarts itself. Attempted VGA->DVI adapter, but that wouldn't even bother with a signal. The Mac didn't crash though, FWIW.

I'm pretty sure the screenshot is from an iMac with the optional 4850 module.

Interesting that it has device id of 9444a....perhaps I should mod mine to this, if possible, as now it is 9442 I think.

Would be great to get ROM dump from the 4850....I wonder if it is even possible in Windows?

My Mac Pro is currently being used to do data downloads from a Red Camera shoot, so I won't have fiddle time with it for several days.

There is a Nehalem machine I can go test the 5.0 thing with tonight, if I am not too tired.

I know this is off-topic, but Rominator, would you be interested in posting your experiences with RED at some point? I'm curious as to how the Mac Pros handle it, and I'd like to get a Scarlet (should they ever release it...) in the future.
