Yeah, I did try this one - it works as long as Im with 10.5.6 (performance very low, seems to be w/o driver - but I get a display and can logon). When I update and the drivers for the 4870 are "built-in" I can´t logon to Mac OS anymore, blue screen - nada.. brrrr

(I´m a freshly converted pc-guru, I´m helpless with OS X)

What's your card ?

Which brand is the best in terms of compatibility, reliability, speed and silence? I'm really overwhelmed with the number of brands out there. I'd really appreciate some help.

I bought the card mentioned at the beginning of this thread, because I think it will work better than the one I returned (the one I mentioned earlier.)

Just to double check, this card DOES do dual-DVI now, right?

Right?

Also, to install the injector, all I do is install ATY_init?

Right well, I can't find a dfc anywhere. I know this has been vaguely covered but can I get a thumbs up that flashing a hfc will do the same job as the dfc? as the hfc is all I can find. Optionally if anyone can find a dfc.....

XFX cards do dual DVI. I don't believe it's working on any of the others. I have a 1GB XFX I flashed (no injector stuff) and dual DVI works great in OS X.

I am owner of an XFX 4870 512MB - thats a useless piece of money atm :)

Mhh finally - I got it running, BIOS+EFI worked, but I need a helper card (ATI Radeon 2600HD) to boot, now I need to figure out how to connect to my display. Sometimes I can login to OSX on first boot with display connected via HDMI, normaly I need to have the other card connected via VGA.

Is there a rule on how to connect the second card, adapters (HDMI, VGA) or any hint how to get rid of the second card ?!?

Did you try with just the OEM ROM?

The "helper card" thing is supposed to be with Nvidia. Don't think ATI works same way, at least not between 2600 and 4870.

Is this normal

I just flashed my 4870 xfx card. However my ATI 2600 does not work in OSX and crashes windows. I have had to disable the card for windows to boot. The card now shows as a ATI 3400. Is it possible I flashed both cards? Does anyone have a link to the bios for the 2600. I also cannot pull the card or OSX does not boot. I am wondering if anyone else has walked into this issue.

I thought I would be able to use the 2600 and 4870 together to drive multiple monitors.

Yeah I know - it should work w/o the other card. Yet I can´t seem to get a login window with just the 4870 (your OEM ROM used..). Waking from standby doesnt work properly and not every boot runs smooth - I will get another card, this is no fun at all. Now aiming for 285GTX from apple :( $$$

I've not had any issues running a flashed 4870 xfx card and an Apple 2600 at the same time to drive three screens. Two connected to the 4870 and one connected to the 2600.

It does sound like you've flashed the wrong card.
When you were flashing it with the command:

ATIFlash -p 0 macxfx.rom -f

Did you make sure that adapter 0 was the correct card to flash?
I think when I did it I had to change it to this to flash mine:

ATIFlash -p 1 macxfx.rom -f

Very freaked out about this.

Hi guys,

I posted a few pages back when I had bought a cheapo Sapphire 512MB 4870. It didn't work when flashed or ATY_init'd or BOTH (kept repeating startup chime over and over and over) so I returned it after reflashing it to stock with my PC.

I just bought the Sapphire 100259 1GB 4870 mentioned in this post:
https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/7473867/

I downloaded the ROM linked to by netkas here:

https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/7271105/

and followed the flashing instructions that netkas posted here:
http://netkas.org/?p=90

Now, I have the Sapphire 100259. I have ATY_init installed, so I first tried to just boot with the stock card firmware. As I suspected, no dice. The card was not recognized in OS X, but it was in Windows XP. I booted into XP, and took a backup of the card using GPU-Z. Then, I booted into my DOS bootdisk and ran the flashing commands (listed above) with the ROM (also listed above) netkas posted. I rebooted after doing this, and bam. I now have the SAME looping startup chime. I leave for college in a week and a day, and I'm really worried I won't have this card to use for more workspace (which I desperately require at college.)

Please, @rominator or anyone else. Can you please help me solve my problem? All I want is Dual-DVI (not even DVI -> VGA) to work on my card so that I can use it with my Mac Pro in OS X.

Thanks so much in advance!

Saphire 1 Gig is single DVI.

You want an XFX 1 Gig or an early, reference 512 board.

Only ones with Dual DVI in Leopard.

May be different story in Snow Leopard.

So I'm screwed? There is absolutely NO way to get a second DVI port working on this card that I bought at ALL? Why is this card even recommended in that tutorial?

As far as I know, the Saphire 1 Gig cards are all single display.

Most people only use one display so they don't care and it ended up in tutorial that way. (I didn't write tutorial....I hate that it says you need 2 cards in while flashing, utter baloney)

The ORIGINAL Saphire 512 board with red ATI cooler could run Dual DVI.

Thank you for your response Rominator.

I also think it's dumb that it says that there should be two cards. It's kind of flawed, but still well written!

It looks like Chas0001 (I already PMed him about this, no response yet) got the card to work with Natit. I followed instructions posted earlier that involved a python script to create a custom .ROM (I forgot who posted them, but they were earlier) and it worked! Chas0001 did the same exact thing. I tried installing this Natit (https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/7643911/) but my dual displays do not work. Is there a newer Natit that might work better that you can direct me to? It would hopefully solve this issue. I was unable to find one.

Thanks again Rominator! Your help is GREATLY appreciated!
