I know Iam late here..but here is my opinion on why some (including) may want to be able to add unlimited apps on the iPhone.

One reason may be that you want to load all the 1000-2000 games out there on your iPhone so when you are on the road you have access to them and you are a hardcore gamer.

That's just one example!

Basically, why should we be limitted on how many apps we can have? We are allowed to have 1 app only so we should be allowed to have 1000 if we want to! The argument where we say you don't need them all does not stand as we want to have the game or apps ready on our phone at all time! :)

1) If you're a hardcore gamer then get a PSP.
2) There is no longer a limit on the amount of apps you can have. There is a limit on the amount of pages you can have, but you can use the spotlight search to find any "spill-over" apps

Just jailbreak your iPhone, install sbssettings dock whatever apps you want to dock and poof the rest. BTW hopefully you updated to 3.0 or 3.0.1. One more thing if I was to I would upgrade and get a 32gb 3gs.

Enjoyed reading this tread.

I wonder why there is a limitation on the number of apps? My guess is that it is a bit/byte issue at this point which can be changed in future release. The Newton had a nice system for organizing applications via a simple drop down menu. Maybe the Phone OS could use something similar.

Personally, at first I used a lot of apps. Now I am using about 3-4 pages. And move apps into that zone for convenience. Some apps that I use are duplicates. For example I have a few calculators. But depending on what I need I choose the appropriate calculator. Works well for me.

One thing I know from my development days, is that users like choice and do not like to be constrained by the OS or application. Hopefully, Apple will update the Phone OS to support more app pages.

There's no limit on the number of apps (apart from storage space), but there is a limit on the number of pages you can have (eleven on the 3GS). You can access any off-page apps using Spotlight.

You're right about the organisation system. I generally have app types grouped by page, so it would be nice if I could zip straight to my "Travel Apps" page.

I can see S Jobs demoing this feature, followed by "BOOM! There you go!". <crowd go wild>

To save users from themselves.

People would just install and install and install and install, and end up with a phone that has 100's (1000's?) of unused, junky useless apps. Stuff they used once that never gets used again and gets pushed back to page #314. Then these people will go "This phone sucks! It's so hard to find anything and get around!"

Sure, maybe some people are "power users" :)rolleyes:) that "need" HUNDREDS of apps on their iPhone, but most people would just fill it up with crap and then complain about the poor navigation.

I agree that the iPhone needs a 'stacks' type of solution, but I'm ok with a limit on the number of pages. Your dock can only hold so many icons, the Windows taskbar can only hold so many icons, your desktop can only hold so many icons. It just gets unwieldy after a while.

I am not a gamer, I am an artist, and I have my iPhone full of art and photography apps, and I use them all. Not every one, every day, but I need more room.

Is the iPad also going to have this short sided limit on usage?

Gosh, why resurrect! there isn't even an issue with this any more!
If you need more room then the storage on your phone is insufficient, not the fact that you can only have 144 apps, which is not even true anymore!

...and how you can be a self respecting 'artist' or photographer and use your phone as a camera/image editor?!?

You are not restricted to 11 pages of Apps whatsoever. I currently have 19 on my non-jailbroken iPhone. Here's a link: http://www.appleiphoneschool.com/2010/01/28/how-to-get-more-than-11-pages-of-apps-no-jailbreak/

Just remember:
1) Install all Apps via iphone, not iTunes
2) Do all your rearranging of Apps on the iPhone and not iTunes
3) Make sure and sync via iTunes before deleting Apps off your iPhone, so that iTunes has a copy

You can sync with iTunes without any problem whatsoever. Just follow the rules above. I have had 19 pages for sometime now and have had no issues. I have not confirmed that this still works on the small update Apple just gave us to 3.1.3. I hope this helps.

I don't get why people need more than 11 pages of apps. I have 9 pages at the moment and they are not even filled. I have my apps pages set as categories, so some pages only have 4 or 5 apps and others are the full 16. Even so, I think I have too many apps already on my iPhone and will probably delete 10-20 of them as it is.

I really only use 7-8 on a regular daily basis as it is.
Some apps I only use when I visit family back home in Chicago (Chicago L, iTrans CTA, Southwest Airlines), others are used only during the baseball season (MLB at Bat) I could delete these apps and re-install them via iTunes on my next trip to Chicago or next Baseball season.

I also have a few apps that in all honesty I never even used except for maybe 3 or 4 times in the 18 months or so I've had my iPhone. I could easily delete them too. There are some apps that when I downloaded or purchased them I thought would be useful, but they have proven not to be.

I have downloaded and deleted probably over 100 apps already, but the vast majority of them are still in Itunes, should I find a need to put them back on my iPhone at a later date.

There is something calle editing, and I think that is what many people ned to start doing. They most likely have several dzen useless or unused apps cloging up the pages of their iPhone dashboard.

Ugh, Still people trying to tell me what I don't need.

Look dudes, I have all my screens FULL of apps. It's hard to arrange them, and is a huge hassle. I need more than one page just for "financial" apps for tracking stocks, forex, gold, bloomberg, CNBC, CNN, etc etc etc etc etc etc.

That's one page.

All the apps that "spill over" are VERY DIFFICULT to find. I can't remember the darn names. I just got a cool app, "Voice Band" or something - think I'll remember it's name next week? If I use it daily, yes, but if I want it once in a while it might be hard to find it - it's hidden.

HERE IS AN EXAMPLE FOR YOU:
When every page is full of apps and you download a new app, that app is invisible right away - so you never see the icon, and you MUST remember the name to find it. It's a hassle when you download a bunch of apps in a row and then want to come back to them after you have done a session of downloading.

Spotlight search works, but it kinda sucks in some ways like that.

Please iPhone fans, (and hopefully Apple iPhone developer dudes), fix this thing.

I have spend hundreds of dollars on apps, and I can't remember which one's I paid for and which ones were free - another problem I have.

Apple - again I am asking - make me some way to organize apps at least by categories, or folders, or something.

PS - I have a PSP too - just for the latest driving game with the Nurburgring track on it. Ironically I only play this one game on the PSP lol figures eh?

Don't want to jailbreak anymore. Wastes my time.

I want it in the OS.

Believe me anyone who appreciates this problem has considered all these "helpful tips" on how to cope with it. lol.

YES - this is what we need. Glad some dudes are understanding what we really need and thinking about solving the problem.

You make very good points, but this is the misery I choose and want.

I do have hundreds, and, I love my iPhone. We just need to have organization of the apps.

I have spend hundreds of dollars so far, but if my iPhone can't hold em for some silly reason, it would be irksome. I don't want to have to do major housecleaning in iTunes to organize. That's a huge pain in itself. I just want it to work.

Thanks very much for posting this. I'm going to try it out.

Your post is actually what brought me back to this old thread. Hope it works for me!!!

Thanks again.

I did it! I added another page!

Now to find out if the pages last through an iTunes sync up. I am wondering if it will revert after syncing with iTunes. Hope it stays! I just saw some apps I totally forgot about in that invisible ghetto.

You add the pages one at a time with this trick. If you have a backlog of apps, when you restart the iPhone, you get a new blank page on page 2. Then restart the iphone again, and voila, it fills up with all those lost apps. I have no idea how many I have on my iPhone actually, so I am going to keep doing this until I have 19 pages! Maybe this will be enough? haha, I'll let you all know.

I'm sure this will help others out there who want more pages at least,

But still, we need a categories thingy to organize all the apps please Apple!

VERY GOOD TRICK! THANKS AGAIN!

If you have nine pages of apps, your uncommon. Most people have 2 or 3 pages at the most, hell most consumers are still using basic camera phones.

OK, I added more pages, and it turns out that 17 pages was enough to hold all my apps right now, and have a mostly blank page left over!

(something over 256 apps installed I guess - less than I thought actually)

What a relief to have this!

Before I overrun the pages, I can now pick and choose what to keep and chuck.

I'll still be using Spotlight to find apps many times I am sure, but the best part now is that if I forget the name of the app, I can always scroll through the 17 pages until I find it and remember the name and icon.

This is a workaround cool trick thingy - but it will get me by until Apple makes some way to organize apps better. Hey they must love me as an appstore customer, but if they want to sell more apps to me, they need to make it easier to arrange and organize the apps.

Even if there was a listing of all apps by name or something in spotlight it would help.

You made my day with that link

Here it is again, in case guys are speed reading this thread, and don't want to read all the crap I and others have posted:

http://www.appleiphoneschool.com/2010/01/28/how-to-get-more-than-11-pages-of-apps-no-jailbreak/

EXCELLENT! YAY! GREAT FIND!

Read the thread - I was mentioning how I was tired of hearing people tell me what I do not need, or how I am in the minority of use cases etc blah blah.

App organization will help everyone.

Why wouldn't you want 1000 apps? - they are small, and they are loads of fun, and many are free.

I have 15000 photos, 50 songs, 10 small movies, and something like 270 apps installed. Big deal - I am not such an extreme user really. But even if you fill 8 pages of apps, it gets hard to organize. I gave examples in my previous posts.

What happens when you have 30 pages of apps and you can't find the one you're looking for in the ridiculous mass of apps you have? Then you'll complain about that too, won't ya?

Could you please provide screenshots of the pages and pages of apps that you have. And then comment why you need each one every second of every day.

Once you have done this, then I will believe your desperate need for more pages. Until then, you're complaining about nothing.

Hey, I am not actually complaining. I am asking for a fix to this inevitable problem that I have now and you and others might have soon. I am not really complaining - just trying to get answers.

It's true, it could get unwieldy, but I was in Europe in summer, and I wanted everything I could so I could play around, and for my 10 year old kid on the plane, car, train etc, so I have tons of apps - maps etc etc etc, some of which I have unchecked in iTunes trying to cut back (I really do try to do that in iTunes, but it's unwieldy). Not complaining just hoping for the future. Kinda like "multifinder" back in OS 6 - remember how a mac felt before and after "multifinder"? Anyone even remember those days anymore?

Screenshots coming up - I'll do it to make a point, and hey, feel free to criticize my apps. I can justify having some of them I think! lol.

I'm just in iTunes now trying to arrange my apps again - (with all the invisible apps showing up, my stock tracking apps are the only ones I ever could get straight and they are messed up a bit now after the cool trick was applied for 17 pages.

ALSO - I notice now that in iTunes, you can only edit the position of the first 11 pages of apps - I'll screenshot that so you can see what I mean right now. I'll have to figure out how to get the apps I want to really arrange in the first batch of screens.

Here are screenshots of my 17 or 19 screens I have now. It's a mess after adding all the screens, but I am going to clean it all up and enjoy!

Hope it helps others to understand where I am coming from, and I hope you don't make too much fun of me for having so many apps k? :)

glerk!

I think I got them all :)

HEY - maybe you can tell me which one's to delete? Haha - every time I look at them, I think I want them all, plus about 500 MORE really!

I guess it's 19 screens - Wow eh?

I wonder what happens to the dots when I rap it past 19 screens?

Now, which is more unwieldy - checkboxing apps off in iTunes that I don't really need or having more screens? I'll find out. But keep in mind I might have 100 apps that are unchecked and just stored in iTunes. iTunes doesn't report how many apps (like a finder window does, if I care to go look in my "music" folder where my apps are kept (weird organization of apps in the music folder - don't like that much). (actually I looked in my "Mobile Apps" folder - 629 files, but many of these are version updates on existing apps I think. Still don't really know how many apps I have unchecked and uninstalled "culled" within iTunes - but it's another big load of apps. I don't need an offline map of Rome, Italy every day, but it did come in handy and I did pay a few $ for it - well worth it, but if I have all these gigs of space, I have no problem just keeping it on the iPhone if I can just forget about doing housecleaning. I have the latest 32gig 3GS, and have never really felt pressured for storage space, (yet) it's just this apps organization issue that needs a workover.
