I have heard stories that amazon sometimes gets things a bit earlier, but im not sure about ipods...

im going to pick mine up at the store, i think they will have it the earliest

Quite possibly what may happen is this. The 28th of September is the latest it will ship. Apple will probably ship all these initial orders direct from China instead of from one of their DC's. They will also upgrade all the orders to free overnight shipping regardless of what you specify when you order.

At least historically that is what they've done with big launches like this with US orders, not sure about abroad.

In the UK we don't get a choice for shipping, it's free (for orders over £66) and it is "fast shipping"

Does anyone here think that if Apple.com says "Delivers by Oct. 2nd" then I will DEFINITELY get it by then? The reason I ask is because I leave for a trip to Florida on Oct. 3rd and I'm having it shipped to my workplace which I will be at on the 2nd. I don't wanna take my trip without it! I'm also hoping for an earlier ship date and I paid for 2 day shipping to make sure I get it before my trip!

Also, does Apple have a history of shipping things earlier than estimated?

I'd love a surprise late next week that its already been shipped :p Probably won't happen but I can dream can't I?

When will they be in the Apple Stores?

When I asked at Regents Street London all they knew was the end of the month. I am guessing they will start shipping about the 15th-20th though, unless there is a delay like the :apple:TV had.......

On a forum I often look at there is a thread about "gadgets" and obviously the iPod touch was being spoken about, and one of the members asked in a UK apple store when the iPod touch would be in store and the reply he got was 'they might be in store as early as next weekend'
Bearing in mind the Apple guy said 'could'

Nevermind all these delivery dates. First to crack one open and find out if there's a CSR bluetooth chip in there will get props from me. :)

I've been posting that pic (from Arstechnica) to show that bluetooth and wireless are not on the same chip on the iphone as was posited by another poster.
