iPod Ready to ship: By September 28th

It means that 9/28 is the latest that they will be shipping your product, it may be before then, it may not be, but 9/28 is the day it will have definitely shipped by.
 
They can't possibly ship all orders on the 28th. How many Touch ipods have been pre ordered already? I'm sure its a big number. In order to ship them ALL by 28th they'll have to start shipping some early.
 
Steve said at the event that the Touch would be shipping "This Month." So, the Apple store lists the shipping date as the last business day in September. Hopefully it will be sooner than that. I can't wait for my 16gig Touch.

Works in Canada, and I think we use the screwy European style dates here. The Apple store lists the dates as Sep 28, rather than completely numeric, so unless the API the widget uses sends them in mm/dd/yyyy format, I'd think it'd work OK. This is all speculation, though - maybe somone should submit a bug report to the author of the widget, saying it doesn't work in Australia :p
 
I'd say they'll start shipping them around sept 20th or so. I assume they'll be sending them out in order they were purchased? So if you bought it on the 6th you should get it earlier than if you buy it on 15th.
 
As a person who never used an iPod, who thought they were overpriced and under featured, and as geek, I apologize. I will succumb to the iPod touch. The only good thing about it not being out til the 28th is that I was born on the 29th :) Not to mention I have no classes at uni on fridays. I'll be waiting wherever I can to get one.

On a side note: These forums are awesome. Quick responses and sensible comments.

I preordered as soon as the store came back online and i was charged for it the day after!!!

I have bought many, many things from apple but never have i been charged pre-shipping?

Its strange, perhaps they have shipped it? (Here's hoping! :D)

That is indeed strange, I have spoken to Apple about this before and I am sure they do not charge cards until item is shipped, or about to be shipped. How soon after your order were you charged? I'm going to check my account later see if I've been charged......Its a good sign;)

Australian Apple reseller Next Byte sent out an email advertising iPod Touch preorders which said they'd start shipping Sep 20...Hopefully it wasn't a typo.

Like the poster a few posts above my birthday is the 29th, it'd be nice to receive my 16GB in time :)
 
Just spoken to Apple over the live chat facility (UK). They said that debit/switch cards are charged straight away but credit cards are charged when the product has been shipped. The only logical sense I can see in this is the fact that people ordering by credit card may have to pay interest on a product that they have not recieved until 20 or so days later so therefore they charge them when it is shipped to make sure they don't pay unwanted interest.

But I have a big speculation, maybe they are charging the debit cards right away (this is for the uk, unsure about the US) as they are going to ship quicker than what they previously estimated. Like other people are saying they cannot remember Apple charging their card before they get the item but this then conflicts with my other speculation of the reason why we are waiting for this product is because the price of Flash memory is quite high (especially for the 16GB). As they will be getting loads of pre-orders they can tell exactly how many Flash components they need to buy so when flash becomes cheaper so they would have minimized over spend on the flash units.

Do you think they're actually going to ship all of the iPod Touch's on the 28th? I don't think they'd do that. The text on Apple's website says it will ship BY Sept. 28th meaning that it will ship no later than the 28th. They're probably just using the 28th as a deadline so that they can guarantee that everyone will get theirs "on time". This way, everyone is happy!
 
Just checked and my card got charged on the 6th, I ordered on the eve of the release. I find this slightly strange as Apple do not usually do this neither do other companies. To charge a card nearly 3 weeks before the item is expected to ship is odd...... The explanation given by apple to the poster above doesn't seem to make much sense either.

Didn't some guy on here post saying that his estimated shipping date was the 11th?

There we go. I did read in one article (Macworld, maybe?) that Steve had said international orders would be shipping sooner to make up for the fact that iPhones were not available to international customers yet.
 
I'm off to the bank this evening then, to see if ive been charged.

Be nice if they shipped soon. Heres to hoping.

Mine still says shipping by the 3rd of October. Be chuffed if it change sometime soon. :)

I hope that includes Canada! My CC appears to have been charged, but my ship date is still Sept. 28th :(
 
I've also been charged (UK), I really hope your email is right and we do get them earlier (this week would be great!). I know it sounds tight but it would be cool if we got them before everywhere else, I mean, we rarely ever get anything first!
