What were you expecting for $400, given that the $800 iPad Pro has, I quote, "4-speakers, 4K 60fps, 12mp camera, portrait mode, ProMotion" and FaceID?

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, and that you'd rather pay $600+ for those features on an iPad mini?

The new iPad Air which is a 9.7 inch tablet is going for $499.00 with a nice screen, pencil and A12 processor while the new iPad 7inch with the same specs is $399.00, not sure of the logic of that, perhaps the 7 should be sold for $299.00.

The prices for Apple iPads are either random or unbalanced.

And the iPhone XS Max which has an even smaller screen starts at $1099. Having a larger screen does not automatically equate to higher value. The utility you get from the device is what matters, and in this case the iPad mini's utility is exactly the smaller size while retaining iPad characteristics like Pencil capability and multitasking.

You're also vastly understating the size of the iPad mini. It is 7.9", not 7". Not only that, the iPad Air has a 10.5" screen, not 9.7".

The iPhone is a different beast and has lte in it and iPad mini (which I like a lot) does not...the price is not justifiable in this case.

In electronics, smaller has almost always been more expensive. It been that way for decades.

The iPad mini does have LTE options. If you want to compare prices w/Cellular support the situation doesn't change.
  • 6.5" iPhone XS Max 64GB $1100
  • 7.9" iPad mini w/LTE 64GB $530
  • 10.5" iPad Air 3 w/LTE $630
By your reasoning, the XS Max has the most "random or unbalanced" price of all.

Ugh

Not a big deal but should’ve set my Best Buy order for in store pick up

Mine looks like it will be shipping out tomorrow

I have a mini 3 and do not use touch I use six digit code.

Pencil most likely it gets lost.

Although it could come in handy for me.

it does have 64gb I like it and my mini 3 is a bit long in the tooth. I most likely will buy it.

For the life of me I don't understand why anyone wants touch id or face id. The security risk is huge for either method.
If some one robs me while I have the mini I can simply say the password is 123456 they take it and I am safe. If it has fingerprint to face id and some one robs me while i have the mini it is very likely they will consider taking me along with the mini. So I now have to wait and hope that the 5 allows me to only use a six digit password like the mini 3 does.

four speakers WT..? speakers are so small why do I need 4 little one over 2.

Interesting perspective. I think that password protection is plenty good enough. So many times it couldn't read my fingerprint after multiple tries, then it tells me to enter my password - after it has wasted my time with a frustrating process. I never thought to turn off Touch ID and just go back to password only. I may try that on my iOS devices.

Umm, I think your inability to understand a simple concept (why other people would want Touch/Face ID) appears to cloud your ability to understand that a person robbing you would probably not use the same logic as you when separating you from your belongings, and that the outcome would likely be different than you have predicted.

Secondly, it seems that you don't understand that Face/Touch ID enabled or not, the passcode is always usable if enabled. So there's no reason for anyone to need anything other than the passcode.

So I now have to wait and hope that the 5 allows me to only use a six digit password like the mini 3 does.

No, you don't HAVE to wait. The Mini 5 has been in people's hands for two days now. It's pretty easy to find out the answer to that without waiting. Or you can wait, that's fine too.

I like both Touch ID and Face ID. All four of my iPads allow me to use a passcode, but I use 8 letters rather than 6 digits. Any time I restart an iPad, I have to enter the passcode. I find entering the passcode annoying so I’m glad that I only have to use for a few things. I much prefer Touch I and Face ID.

I also rather doubt that someone wanting to steal your iThing is going to want to take you with them if you use Touch ID. How are they going to know what you use?

I've been on the road for a month and wasn't able to preorder, surprised to see these slipped shipping times. Seems like the Mini is a bit more popular than many MacRumors forum posters would have had you believe over the past couple of years

To those that think finger touch or Face ID is good and secure I hope you never get burned depending on it. As it would mean you are being forced by a criminal to open the gear.

To each their own but you do know how flawed your argument is, right? I agree with the other posters who said you don’t really comprehend how these features work. You claimed the robber would just ask you your passcode and scamper off. Do you really think they wouldn’t check that you gave them the real passcode first? That doesn’t even make sense.

You also know that with these extra features it still requires the passcode be enabled, right? So then you could just give them the passcode which would, in your example, mean you are safe, so that doesn’t make sense either.

Can you cite any article, anywhere in the world, where someone was kidnapped strictly because their iOS device was locked via face or Touch ID? To think no criminal would ever try to force your passcode out of you is just ridiculous as well.

As for the mini5, I mostly just read and do mock ups on an ancient iPad which works fine. The videos I’ve seen make it very tempting to pull the trigger on an upgrade on a new mini. I think I’ll make trip to a store this weekend and play with one. For what it is, and it’s price, I’m happy with features it offers.

Sane at least some one realizes the danger of fingerprint or Face ID with out the password option.

I am happy to see this one will allow me to use password only option and not have to use finger touch or Face ID.

I will most likely be using this mini 5 very soon with a six number password.

64gb should be good. The pencil ✏️ looks like a nice upgrade.

I don’t keep sensitive stuff on my iPads. I would expect a criminal to steal my stuff when I’m not around or grab it from me and run. I can’t imagine them hanging around long enough to force me to open it, and for what purpose?

I don’t think about Face ID or Touch ID being secure, I think of it as a convenience. Besides, there’s no way to get around using a password for some things, and it would seem that 8 letters are even more secure than 6 digits.

I own a Paperwhite, but I much prefer reading on a tablet. Not only can I see more text, I also find the text clearer. Additionally, a great advantage is the speed at which I can find out something. Thus, for example, some time ago I was reading a Swedish crime novel in which a certain town in Northern Sweden was mentioned. I was intrigued to see what it actually looked like. A few seconds later I was checking it out on YouTube. My whim satisfied, I returned to the book. I also am a fan of Kindle X-Ray and immersion reading. Moreover, everything is considerably faster on a tablet. Consequently, I find is so much easier to go back and forth in text.

I like to use my Paperwhite when I'm reading outdoors, or need to save my iPhone/iPad battery. But before I gave my iPad mini 4 to my son I did use that more. And I suspect when my Mini 5 comes in, that my Kindle will be put away and used less often.

But until then, when indoors and in the evenings I put the Paperwhite away and switch to my iPhone or iPad Air 2 - I don't like the colder blue LED tones on the paper white in the evening, as it does disrupt my sleep patterns a little.

My nook screen and iPad can be turned to light up with warmer tones, but I don't like that my nook doesn't have 3G built-in and so I don't buy nook books much anymore.

If someone robs me I will have to introduce them to Mr Sig Sauer or Mr Smith and Wesson, but only if my life is in danger. They can have the iPad.

1) Oh, my grandmother is fully woke.

2) Yes, I've never gone for the theory about the Paperwhite not shining in eyes. If the tablet is set up correctly my eyes are much less affected; my sleep likewise.

My first impression of the mini 5:

- Unbeatable size and weight for portability, no reason not to get the LTE version.
- Huge bezels comparing to the iPad Pro, especially at the bottom side, why the Touch ID button is off centre?

- Questionable value in the age of phones having 6.5 inch screen, of course, the aspect ratio is much better for browsing the web.

Not questionable at all. Put them side by side and you'll see that the mini's screen real estate is much bigger both in terms of perception and reality. Long and skinny really cannot cut it for activities like reading and browsing.

Huge bezels? Perhaps large in comparison to the Pro, but my niece also looks large as compared to Kaia Gerber, but actually she's a size 8 (size 4 US).

All buttons are off centre (just checked my 9.7 Pro and it's quite marked). It's just more apparent with the mini because of the size of the bezels.
