If thief has fingerprint and dumps ipad info before I lock it he now has a fingerprint to access all other devices with a finger print.

My goodness are you reaching. Do you really think your average thief has the ability to dump encrypted fingerprint data, and clone it to a human-like hand? Or did you think the thief could just print it out on computer paper with the click of a button and then unlock your device with it? Anyone who can do this, can also crack a 6 digit code using various techniques already used by a hacker group and the FBI a few years back.

As your story continues to change with every post, and you give out completely wrong information, you have got to be trolling at this point.

And thanks to you I have found what I was looking for. Apple support.
Manage your Touch ID settings

Go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode to manage these settings:

    • Turn Touch ID on or off for Passcode, iTunes & App Store, or Apple Pay.
    • Enroll up to five fingerprints. Each new print might make fingerprint recognition take slightly longer.
    • Tap a fingerprint to rename it.
    • Swipe to delete a fingerprint.
    • Identify a fingerprint in the list by touching the Home button. The matching print in the list will be highlighted briefly.
Press the Home button using Touch ID to unlock your device. To unlock your device using Touch ID without pressing the Home button, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Home Button and turn on Rest Finger to
Open

I still won't set a fingerprint as I won't have time to do this if robbed at gunpoint.

My issue with a finger print for security still exists as being robbed at gunpoint means the thief has pin code and finger print which I won't be able to lock that quickly. If thief has fingerprint and dumps ipad info before I lock it he now has a fingerprint to access all other devices with a finger print.

It still leads to more danger of being kidnapped not for the device but for the info on the portable device.
I prefer a code and no finger print but as I said to each his own. I will be buying a mini 5 and not setting the finger print. As I don't bring valuable info out of the home thinking a finger print protects better then a six digit code.

I think most people don't understand my point a 399 iPad is just that 399 I don't care if a theif takes that rather then shoot me for a code or a fingerprint.

And a code has no identity a fingerprint does.

Although I suppose you could use all ten fingers one for each of your devices. So one stolen device does not imply easy access to the other nine. Unless the thief decided to kidnap you after viewing the ipad and seeing how nice your house looks like.

A buddy of mine always has a wad of cash about 300 in 5's 10's 20's he would toss it left and run right. Handing an ipad with a password written on it always seemed like a version of that to me.

I’m pretty sure that is not how Touch ID works. Your fingerprints are all over that iPad that you give the thief, anyway. Touch ID on one device doesn’t make your other devices accessible to the “stolen” Touch ID.

Maybe you should watch this TechRadar video on Touch ID. You are all upset about something that isn’t even a “thing”.

This run of space grey is BEAUTIFUL and the chamfered edges are nice and dark / matte too, here it is next to the weak sauce space grey (12.9 2017)

nope but one more weakness is 5 fingerprints can be programmed so if you have a bad roommate or relative and you lapse they could slip in a fingerprint id. if only a six digit password and only 1 allowed only you have it and can change it when you want.

You don’t seem to understand how the fingerprint scanner technology works and that the fingerprint is confined to that one device even if you have several devices and use the same fingerprint. With a 6-digit passcode set, a “bad” roommate could still slip in their fingerprint if you leave your device unattended and not locked.

If you have a bad roommate or relative, they could probably manage to video you secretly while you enter your passcode. I can’t imagine having anything on my devices so secret that I would be concerned about a roommate or relative getting into my device. Any information as precious as you seem concerned about probably shouldn’t be on a device like an iPad in the first place.

I don’t want to be the one, but isn’t this thread supposed to be for discussing the iPad Mini 5?
I agree and One of the features was fingerprint someone wanted face id. I said I don't want either and needed to wait to see if I can buy one with a bypass option and everyone else freaked out.

I am willing to go back delete all my posts about this. Since I did learn I don't have to use the fingerprint option. I would like to ask if anyone has tried the apple pencil on it and does it work well.

I went back and deleted my posts .
I am in the market for a new mini 5
my mini 3 is long in the tooth.

I wanted feedback on use with apple pencil.

Do you have a store that you can go to and try it? I played with the pencil in Notes for a few minutes and liked the experience. I think I will end up using the pencil more on the Mini 5 than I have on any of my iPad Pros. You’re the only one who can really decide if it works for you for what you want to do.

I wrote with ink and pencil, changed pencil color. I didn’t notice any lag and the writing looked like my normal writing with a pen or pencil.

yeah I am 15 miles from an apple store.

I did find logitech makes one for less but I am pretty sure I will be wanting one or the other.

My iPad mini 3 was a very nice piece of gear worked for years with zero issues. This mini 5 will be a good update

My local store had a pencil set out with nearly every display Mini. I was the only one there trying them out. I have no experience with the Logitech. You should be able to find some reviews comparing the pencil and the crayon.

I'd be happier if I didn't keep getting an iMessage/FaceTime verification fail message, when I log in!!

We all thought the mini was dead. just be happy they upgraded it.

What does everyone think about the release and design of the mini 5 here? I honestly can’t stand the home button look or (the home button period,) but I’m more annoyed they didn’t add 4-speakers, 4K 60fps, 12mp camera, portrait mode, ProMotion... and they still have the mini at a ridiculous high price (especially compared to the 2018 iPad.)
I think I’d have ignored the home button design IF Apple had added those features and especially 4-speakers and Promotion.
Lately it’s seeming like 2018-2019 for all Apple products (except iPhone) have been/will be regurgitated designs with just spec bumps.

If I could get the iPad mini 5 for $250-275... I maybe would grab one then. But part of me wonders if Apple will upgrade the mini ever again and if I should wait still.

Anyone thinking in 2-4 years Apple will give a true redesign and upgrade to the mini 5, and are any of you thinking you might wait?

K.

No problem, thank you for being understanding. The discussion seemed to have taken a left turn thereabouts.

If you read further down, you see I catch myself nitpicking and forgot I wanted this exact iPad Mini... what was the point of your post, since I already adjusted my initial thoughts?
Anyways, back on topics folks... have you received your iPad Mini 5, and is it awesome, meh, or lame?

I received my mini three days ago. It was splurge; I didn't really need to upgrade my older mini 4. But I'm surprised how much snappier it is, how much quicker Touch ID is, how much brighter the screen is, and I'm quite happy with it.

I was just looking at both, side by side, and from some google source it does look like the screen nits increase from 450 to 500... But I really can't tell the difference in the brightness.

The speed is better, extra-buttery - especially for doing processor intensive things (like ToucID?), but I have to say, the mini4 is still very usable.

To me, the big difference is pen support. I used to think the pencil was kind of a gimmick and of little practical use... but now I use it every day.

If you were thinking of a phone, I'd recommend that you at least seriously consider Samsung. For a tablet, Apple is the only way to go. Android for the most part is a dead duck in that regard. Even the Tab S4, which is at the very top of a really lousy heap, misses the mark by a country mile.

The mini 5 vs. the Tab A, in movie terms, is akin to a boxing bout in which we have Sylvester Stallone as Rocky in one corner pitted against Paul Reubens as Pee-Wee Herman in the other.
I understand that is a common thing to believe. But I have extensive experience with iPads (since day-1 of gen-1) and Android tablets produced within the past 2-3 years and depending upon the use case (that is the important point) they can be on-par or even superior to the iPad (even the iPad Pro).

This is a great release imo

'Boring' Apple is my preferred Apple

A12, P3 screen, headphone jack+lightning+no need to buy another pencil, a solid space grey color, and under $400 ($375 for preorder)

Even battle-hardened Android reviewers have given up and invariably tell their followers to buy iPads. The Android tablet is dying and there's no way it can be brought back to life.

She's a fabulous nerd.

More than that I really like her as a person. Such a sunny disposition. Absolutely no side to her. And yet so artistic and disciplined and smart.

What's interesting? The speed difference? Or am I missing something obvious?

Oh well, it managed to satisfy at least five other punters. You can't win them all.
