SSD will arrive tomorrow. I'll throw a GTX570 2.5GB in and I think about getting the W3565 3.2Ghz Quad CPU. I'll do the speedtest again, let's see what's going to happen then :D

Same result whether using external FW800 7200rpm as the scratch disk or using the internal 5400rpm system disk - but not sure if this makes a difference to this test anyway.

EDIT: forgot that the 8GB RAM I added probably means that the machine didn't even hit the scratch disk; hence the same result irrespective of which drive it was on.

Retried with CS6:
16.03 seconds (tested repeatedly)

My MBP seems to be faster in executing this action with CS6 than with CS5 (see quoted post below).

Not bad for a 3 year old setup. I'll post updated times after a few ram/GPU/SSD upgrades.

Mac Pro 4,1
2 x 2.26GHz Quad Core Xeons
24 GB Ram
3 x 2TB WD Caviar Green in Raid 0
2 x 128 GB OCZ Vertex 4 in Raid 0, each plugged into a PCIe slot using Apricorn Velocity Solo X2 (slots 2 and 4 used)
EVGA GTX 570HD 2.5GB from MacVidCards
Adobe CS6 Master Collection with latest updates installed
OS X 10.8.2 with supplemental update installed.

Average time over 3 runs: 12.4 seconds

Will try this at home with basically the same configuration but MacPro5,1 with 2x2.4GHz Quad Core Xeons.

I'm blaming the PCI SSD for this score, as far as I can tell it's the single most important thing in my machine now.

Average score over 5 runs: 11.2 seconds

I'll run it again later this week once I've upgraded to my memory to 16 GB.

I'm curious to see how the new 27" models compare.

Edit: 16GB RAM upgrade gave negligible speed increases.

I have the same notebook you do with the exception of mine has a Vertex + and it ran in the neighborhood of 40 sec with the DGPU

I don't know to which MBP you are referring. If it's the MBP 8,3, are you are running 16GB of RAM? As far as SSDs are concerned. The one I have was the one that Apple supplied as part of the custom build. If it's the MBP 5,2, then perhaps the Vertex SSD vs the regular HD in my laptop is what accounts for the speed difference.

you right I put the SSD in the 5,2 not where it belongs. With this test the SSD does make all the difference.
