Is there a keynote scheduled to coincide with the Americas release? - Wheres Steve Jobs? Is he supposed to be presenting tonight?

The wait really is starting to get unbearable. If they're not implementing a better GPU and better battery life, it will be such a disappointment. I don't see the point in upgrading the CPU yet again, 2.16Ghz is just fine and still better than any other notebook in its price range.

A better CPU will more than likely come along with an upgraded GPU, faster FSB, and a higher ceiling on ram. I can't see them dropping faster processors in there and not going to SR. Hell, they don't need to drop faster processors in there at all, just Santa Rosa. Maybe that's what the plan is.

Is there also a chance the new Macbooks will come with a bigger HDD? It would save me at least €70 since I'll definately need to upgrade. Hopefully there will be support for 5400rpm 200GB HDD too.

Silent Update??

I don't keep to much up to date on the MBPs, but I just noticed this on the Apple website... am I mistaken, or is this a silent update??
Processors:
The new MacBook Pro features Intel’s latest mobile processor — the Intel Core 2 Duo running at speeds up to 2.4GHz with a 4MB L2 cache — making the MacBook Pro one of the fastest notebooks on the planet.
Graphics  :
Promote your ideas on the MacBook Pro’s dazzling new displays. Throw in the color and clarity of the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT with 256MB of GDDR3 SDRAM, and you'll have the power to do it all, anywhere.

See: http://www.apple.com/macbookpro/ for more information.

Unfortunately MBs still look like nothing's changed :(

It's been like that since may. All have the 8600M GT and each but the low-end version has 2.4Ghz.

Don't tell me you thought it still had the X1600:p

These updates were incorporated into the MBPs which were released in June 5th 2007. They were pretty quiet about the updates, but these were some significant ones.

Good point. As I said, I hadn't been following the MBP setup too closely ;)
I had just read the rumor on MacSlice a few minutes ago suggesting they'd update to 8600 GTs with 256/512MB ... I guess they're keypoint was solely the graphics memory?

They probably just redesigned the page to fit the Leopard Style with black background and such i guess *shrug*

Let's just hope they come up with something before the christmas holiday season!! ;)

By the way, what did you mean by "Hopefully there will be support for 5400rpm 200GB HDD too."? I thought in this day and age there was no hardware restriction (or none, that we could breach with current hard drives), capping what you plugged in. So if you were to plug in a 300GB/4200rpm - Fujitsu sells them for € 155 (that's roughly $ 220) - shouldn't that just work fine?

Well on the Macbook's page you can only order a 4200rpm/200GB HDD, so I supposed there was no support for 5400rpm/200GB. But hopefully I'm wrong:)

Well to be quite honest, I'd be a bit disappointed if all you could put in it were what they offer
Seeing as we're (luckily) not bound to buying apple certified memory it should work just fine :)

Fingerprints

I hope that some of those specs are true. Biometrics could be useful in a Pro setting, I have some files that I'd love to lock up even tighter than they are now, and being able to unlock my book from sleep with the swipe of a finger would be nice.

sorry to destroy your dream but fingerprints are not even close to the security of a good password

they are very easy to fake

if you want a good lock use some >128 bit AES ;)

I don't see how anyone gets away with using fingerprints. I've seriously known techs who used that security on their laptops, and got their finger burned/cut/whatever, and couldn't get into their laptop. One even lost his finger all together in an accident.

It's hard to fake a fingerprint when it doesn't exist anymore...

Plus, i'd like better speakers if possible. I think there was even a PC laptop that had a built in subwolfer. How awesome is that idea!!
The company were sued because it was not a subwoofer. A subwoofer needs to be at least 8inches or larger to physically be able to produce such low frequencies.

It's like Bose (Buy Other Sound Equipment), they cannot call their bass modules "subwoofers" as they use mid-range drivers what the awful small paper coned satellites cannot produce.

You got a link to your source? I can think of three notebooks off the top of my head that have subwoofers in them.

Asus W2 series
Toshiba X205
Sager NP5791

I'm pretty sure he's correct. You do need a large cone to produce such low frequencies without considerable distortion. The Toshiba X205 do advertise that the machine contains '4 built-in Harman/Kardon® stereo speakers with 1 Subwoofer'.
From the image here it doesn't look to be a completely accurate description. I can't see a bass port of any nature, or even speakers that look capable of producing substantially low frequencies to be called a 'Subwoofer'. However a Subwoofer can be smaller than 8", but wouldn't produce bass deep or rich enough to truly be considered a Subwoofer. To be completely honest, I don't think a Subwoofer in a notebook computer would be the most sensible idea anybody's ever come up with - I'm not entirely certain how the machine's hardware would withstand the vibrations at such low frequencies.
Also, actually having a Subwoofer built-in seems quite a boring idea when you think that most of the lower frequencies the Subs would produce would not be audible unless played above the volume that the laptops internal amps allow - especially taking into account that the battery life would be significantly shorter than usual, hence making the 'portability' of the laptop reduced to 30 minute or 1 hour bursts.
However, I could easily be mistaken and some clever little laptop designer could've proven me completely wrong. Very possible :)

The computer showcase at my university (Michigan) has put their macbooks on sale- blackbook w/ applecare for 1438... could make it tough to hold out for any minor upgrade that might be around the corner...
