Why put the blame on Apple for misbehaving apps? Perhaps it is the apps fault. Not conforming to a standard that Apple is now enforcing in an update. I would suspect the apps before I would blame Apple. Many apps are poorly coded and Apple blocks holes that apps should not have been using.
some real hole blockers so true…smh

none of the things in the OP are even remotely the typical user experience

Well this is my experience, perhaps I experience things differently from you?

The cameras are phenomenal

I’m sorry but with my use, the cameras didn’t rock my world.

battery is widely considered to be pretty darned good

I literally had to charge it before end of the day. Also runs hot. Perhaps it was a defective unit.

how are updates disruptive

It says I have to install important security updates, that can’t wait, appatently. That would be fine but the phone just starts counting by itself ”shutting down in 5 seconds” or so. On my SE I could always install updates manually.

Let's start with battery life though. Are you running facebook, instagram, x, 100 tabs, playing games and screen at full brightness all day or something? I've had my 15PM for 3 days and have only had it charging while in my car to and from work and my sons soccer practice. Have never had a need to charge it otherwise so far.

Apples default apps mostly like Safari, Mail, Calendar, Notes, Reminders, etc. Third party apps Slack, Disney+, Brain.fm, banking apps…

Now for the camera. This is where I really have to feel like this is satire. The nighttime photo and video ability is literally magic compared to my 12 Pro, at least with the 1X lens. And I've tested it quite a bit with nighttime soccer practice and cub scouts the last two nights and have been floored by it.

Well I’m sorry but it didn’t feel like ground breaking to me. SE photos looked OK to me and 15 photos are OK too.

You can adjust the size in the settings to see more content.

I did that but it was still pretty limiting.

If you find the battery life on the 15 Pro Max insufficient, what have you been doing with your 2016 iPhone SE?

I have swapped SE batteries multiple times. Maybe my 15 was defective but it had worse battery life than my SE.

If you’re not trolling, and find it huge and heavy, you can always pick a 3rd gen SE, it’s much lighter, more compact, and cheaper.

I’m now thinking between SE3 and iPhone 13 Mini

Problem here is between the keyboard and chair, not the phone.

Yes ofcourse Apple is perfect.

Why not consider a much cheaper iPhone 13 mini if coming from an se1 and you like the size?

I will. Or SE3.

Why put the blame on Apple for misbehaving apps?
Because they worked perfectly before update.

I might have created this account yesterday but I have been reading MR for almost a year now.

Sharing personal experiences and perspectives can be valuable to the community, as it allows for a broader understanding of different viewpoints. Dismissing someone’s experiences outright not only hinders meaningful discussion but also discourages users from participating.

I have today returned my 15 Pro Max. I have a loaner XR now. Will be checking out SE3 and 13 Mini next.

I’d love for you to elaborate more on this with your experience and photos of the scratches you’re talking about.

I’m also curious which repairs you’re referring to because the repair cost for back replacements on this phone went down.
Returned it today, didn’t have a chance to take photos, unfortunately. But basically this happened, I put it in my purse and the side got scratched little, just from being in the purse. So my friend suggested I take it to jeweller to smooth put the scratch. I asked for a quote but it would be too expensive so I didn’t do it. Glad I didn’t because I could not have returned it. The scratch is very small, almost invisible to the naked eye. But it bothered me. Apple said it grade 5 titanium same they use in space. So how can it scratch? It’s just marketing, I guess.

You can score the latest SE for about $180 unlocked - but - you have to wait 60 days for that unlock.

I picked one up as a backup.

See this thread for details:

Personally i agree with a lot of your points and have stuck with the Minis

People happy with their iPhone cameras have, fortunately for them, not been spoiled by real modern cameras. The best camera is the one in your pocket but man, compared to my fujifilm, you just kinda stop caring and wish Apple would put the flush lens back in. The difference just isn't spectacular enough. Not to mention in the not too distant future AI will retroactively improve all of our photos 🤓

Lot of AppleHeads trying to dismiss your opinion and experience. Although there’s definitely heft to the newer phones, battery life is abysmal, you’ve got to give it credit in terms of raw performance. It may take some time adjusting and hopefully getting used to.
Not everything that’s they latest, is the greatest. Different strokes for different folks, and that’s perfectly fine. Ignore the AppleHeads who laugh at you.

Apple said it grade 5 titanium same they use in space. So how can it scratch?
The titanium is covered by a coating that gives it a different color. My understanding is that it’s mostly that coating being scratched which leads to more visible blemishes.

The same thing happens on the Windows platform. An OS upgrade breaks some application because the application was doing an improper API call. Or was violating the data standards that were documented of an API call. Apple enforces the standard and closes their hole. That is the application’s fault, not Apple or Microsoft. Finding an undocumented trick is never going to end well for an application that uses the trick.

This has been a problem since the days of big iron. I used to write code that used tricks, work-arounds, that were not officially supported. When a new OS was released my code would crash and burn. Not the vendor's fault or problem, it is my fault and problem.

A poorly coded application is always in danger of going toes up on an OS update. I have no sympathy for the application developers or the application users.

I purchased iPhone 15 Pro Max, and I have to say, coming from original SE, it’s been a frustrating experience. First and foremost, the battery life is bad. I find myself constantly searching for a charger by evening. This has made the phone incredibly inconvenient for daily use. Also phone heats up like crazy and 17.0.3 has not fixed the issue.

The phone is too big and heavy but theres very little extra content shown on the screen. So it’s like just streched regular screen.

The software updates have become a nightmare. It seems like every other day there’s a new update that disrupts everything… iOS 17.0.1… 0.2… 0.3… Not to mention, some of these updates have caused compatibility issues with third-party apps, making them crash or behave erratically.

The camera, while touted as a major selling point, has been a letdown. The pictures are often overprocessed, and in low light, they are downright terrible. It feels like the camera’s capabilities were oversold, and it’s not living up to the hype.

The phone is incredibly fragile, and even a minor scratchinh can lead to a ruined finish. And when it does scratch, the repair costs are astronomical. It’s almost like they want you to buy a new phone instead.

In summary, this iPhone has been nothing but a headache. The poor battery life, huge size and weight without more screen real estate, heat issues, constant updates, disappointing camera, and fragile design make it a frustrating and expensive device to own. I expected more from a flagship iPhone, but unfortunately, it falls short in many areas.

Yeah, ok.

Did you try a fresh install without a backup to see how the new phone fairs?

Have you contacted Apple Support for them to run diagnostics and troubleshoot the issues with you?

It seems crazy to say you regret when you have a buyers remorse window to return it and it sounds based on what you’ve shared that you aren’t interested in seeking resolution or understand they EVERY release is generally followed by like 3 or 4 updated to iron things out.

Maybe I am wrong but that’s just the gist of what I got from your original post.

The weight was the deal killer for me. I don't want to carry around a brick.

5X camera was also really poor. The 15 Plus makes more sense.
What’s this nonsense about the 5x being ‘really poor’? What on earth are these repeated statements about the 5x being bad? Explain!

It's the equivalent of a f/27 lens. TLDR it requires A LOT of light to work well and reportedly still isn't great in bright daylight

AI will overcome physics eventually but it hasn't happened in the Camera app yet

For a second here I thought the person that just wrote an essay on everyone they know with a 15PM can’t make phone calls created a new account.

Yes the phone is heavy, compare it to a 14PM and think yourself fortunate.

iOS updates apply to all phones, not just the 15PM.

Use a case, like 99% of other people that have any mobile device.

Clearly a troll post, but what the hell I took a bite

He is right. I have the exact same things going wrong. I come from a iPhone 4s and the camera is 10 times better on the 4s. I will give away my 15 Pro Max to a forum user for free. Anyone interested?

It's the same iOS and iOS UI as on your SE, the Pros have a higher pixel density making for a sharper picture and can fit slightly more content in the same space. As entry-level as the SE is you might have underestimated the SE's quality, you get a lot of iPhone with the SE already.

For the camera there is indeed an issue with the HDR feature leading to overblown highlights but you can switch to burst mode and it will disable that. But instead of asking how to fix that you just returned the phone immediately making it impossible to resolve anything.

You can try a Pixel 7/8 Pro if you want a fantastic camera but they have similar issues with overheating, bad cell reception and a couple more. You'll find basically the exact same complaints as here with the Pro iPhones. Personally I use both Pixels and iPhones and I've had other phones from Samsung (never again), LG (good riddance) and others, and the iPhone SE as well as the Pros were pretty much the best even with their flaws.

Settings | General | Software Updates | Automatic Updates

You can turn ALL automatic updating off here, and also automatic downloading. The iPhone won't force you to update unless you have them enabled.

At least mine never has with this disabled. Including on my iPhone 15 Pro Max, where I had to manually kick off the 17.0.3 download and installation after happening to randomly find out online that it was out there.
