+1 Billion respect to Valve for giving us who own PC copies of their games free Mac versions in the new system! You, sirs, have continued to earn my loyalty!

I am surprised that Valve didn't give a fee for downloading the Mac versions, I'd pay 10$ just to help cover the expenses that went into porting the Source to the Mac. Overhauling the engine to support OpenGL isn't that easy and definitely not free, so the fact that Valve spent all the hours and expenses with no ROI is amazing as well.

Valve got my highest respect as a developer and publisher. I can't wait to buy Portal 2 and HL2:E3 for the Mac.

Hopefully it'll run awesome on my 8600gtm.

This is cool: "Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge. For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac. We expect most developers and publishers to take advantage of Steam Play."

Great  I just went out and bought another copy of FM10 because I couldn't use my Steam version on the Mac...

Do you think Game will give me a refund on a PC/Mac game? I'm not sure they do?

They don't for PC games. Or they didn't used to, things might have changed.

I'm playing games via bootcamp at the moment, but I find it somewhat user "unfriendly" always having to reboot.

Now that Steam is heading to the mac, prices for games on both platforms will most likely be synchronised.

However, is it possible to, for example in the case of half life 2, buy a boxed copy (for pc) on amazon (half life 2 complete is actually very cheap, cheaper than when you buy via steam) and then import the game into steam ?
As your pc license allows you to play the same game on the mac side, that would be neat.
Same for Civ 4. Civ4 complete is dirt cheap for PC, but the mac version costs three times as much (online or physical store).

"We are treating the Mac as a tier-1 platform so all of our future games will release simultaneously on Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360."

Yes, you can only play Half Life 2 in Steam.

I can confirm that the retail disc-based versions of the Orange Box set (HL2, Ep1, TF2, Portal, CS:S) can all be added to your Steam library via the license keys included in the set. this adds them as full releases and they can be re-downloaded, support the cloud, etc. Since all are Valve games and all use the Source engine you would then get a Mac version of each once this launches in April - and this might be a really cheap way to get them as the Orange Box for PC can be found dirt cheap now...

Just a word of caution though: Steam is known for it's weekly deals and we can't be the only people that have thought of this so I would guess Valve will put the Orange box on sale themselves release week for new Mac users or something...

Ok, in any case, I'll wait until April.

I can see them supporting physically purchased "Valve" games but I hope that that's the case for Civ4 as well.

I like the idea of having a physical box and DVD of a game. I'd buy a mac version of Half life, if it existed but it doesn't.

Civ4 does exist for the mac, but it costs three times as much as the pc version (amazon for example).
Would be great if you bought a game on Steam, that they offered the possibility of having a boxed copy of the game sent to your home (for a small fee of course ; having to burn the game on a DVD and printing a case cover yourself costs money, too)...

Are you guys saying that every game on Steam will be available to play on the Mac? If so I'm impressed. How would they do that?

Don't get your hopes up. Only Valve's own back library and games that already have a Mac version will play through steam.
For future games, it certainly looks rosy, but don't expect to be able to play Supreme Commander or Crysis natively on your mac come april...

I pledge to buy as many games as possible through Steam just to support Valve in their move to the Mac Platform. The fact that they are not only making the move but also allowing those who purchased PC games to get the Mac version for free (in most cases), I was prepared to spend a hundred or two on Mac version that I will now spend on other game ONLY through Steam. This is just my way of saying THANKS!

Sure there is DRM, but damn it, Mac gamers have waited for this day for a long, long time! NOW is the time to show them that it was worth their energy to make this happen, open your wallets and buy as many Mac games via Steam as possible. If we don't, and the developers, after all this, still give up on Mac games, it will be our loss and the end of Mac gaming forever.

Amen.
