People want triple-A games on their handheld. I suppose we should be prepared to pay AAA prices as well. Otherwise, what's in it for developers?

They can't release the same game on Xbox / PS5 / Switch for massively cheaper on iOS, otherwise they will risk losing sales on those platforms too.

Down the road with USB-C -> HDMI adapters and low-latency bluetooth (if that 'game mode' works with iOS), iPhones have a small but non-zero chance of overtaking or at least competing with game consoles. Game center is a mess though, but if Apple continues to court AAA developers and reinvigorates Game Center I think this could prove at least somewhat viable.

The price is high for now but it will come down via sales. Our Phones are faster than many game consoles now, and soon they will be faster than the highest-end ones so it is a target worth pursuing.

It wouldn't shock me if in a couple of years we see an "Apple TV Pro" that is designed around gaming with an A18 Pro equivalent. Took a decade longer than everyone thought it would, but it could happen.
And a year later there is the A19 ultra with games you can’t play on the A18 Pro. No, apple failed here.

Why is the fact that it plays on M1 Macs not the lead, with the fact that it's playable on the iPhone relegated to also status?

There's no way I'm using my iPhone as my main gaming device and I'm certainly not paying $60 for an iPhone game. But I'll gladly pay $60 for a console quality game I can play on my MacBook Pro, and it only sweetens the pot if I can also play on my mobile devices.
I would guess because even the M1 and M2 don't have hardware accelerated ray tracing which means it won't play as smooth or as high quality as it will on the iPhone. So while it will "play" on those other devices the lead on the story was focused on which device will look/play the best.

Yeah, they definitely should've waited to release the Mac Pro so that it could have that

Why am I not surprised that the people clamouring for AAA gaming titles on iOS are also the ones least willing to pay the them?

Because they're not actually gamers, they're platform-supporters. It's not about the game, it's about the platform. So whatever their platform lacks, they want it available on their platform but aren't actually that interested in paying what it costs to make it sustainable.

The rest of us, who identify as gamers, put the games above the platform. I have too much to play already to wait on some thin trickle of "thank you sir may I have another" options on my Macs and iOS devices. Waste of time.

I'm sure the touch controls will be a joy to use . . . $60 brain aneurysm and a broken phone for me.
I was always a touch control naysayer until I started playing CODM. I absolutely HATE game controllers for FPS games still. As long as touch controls are done right and can be remapped they can be awesome.

$60 considering it's an entire game and not some pay to win IAP bull like world of tanks isn't bad - some people I was up against were spending $100 on a single vehicle.

Some other games (Asphalt maybe?) used to be $49 until they changed to IAP's recently.

M1 Mac’s don’t have the gaming chops yet. They still need to release m3 with ray tracing .
