is it possible? I’m thinking no.

Like many of you who were mad when Apple removed the jack (I know I was one) for reasons cited as “courage”, a yr later after iPhone 7, they came out with the X that was thin with edge or edge screen made possible by folding the screen on the bottom to allow screen controls to attached to the screen. The move to remove the jack seems to make more sense. This was a pretty great technical feat for all the dumb headed ways headphone gate was, folding a screen was genius. You can tell it was a difficult design to pull when manufacturers copied the notch 1-2 yrs later but still have a chin to allow sensors to attached to the screen.

Looking at my XS MAXXXX, given how thin the phone is, a 3.5mm jack seems difficult to accomplish. Courage make less sense and it seems more like a necessity not only to push a wireless world but to accommodate the screen technology with their ever present desire to chase thinness. A wireless design seems inevitable in 2-3 yrs in my honest opinion. Wireless charging, wireless streaming streaming.

Now back when the iPhone 7 came out, I think the x wasn’t ready yet, they needed a sequel to the 6s given Apple are resigned to provide an updated model each year or else the stock will likely tank, the 7 and “courage” needed to happen.

Anyway, I was just thinking about this looking at my XS MAXXXXXXX today. I had a dumb encounter today traveling when they have sample headphones you can connect your phone to. Of course I couldn’t attach my freaking expensive phone because of the no headphone port issue.

Typically given the complication of sourcing raw materials and getting so many devices manufactured at the scale apple does after having a confirmed design signed off. I’d say they’re at least 3-4 years ahead in their labs and have a roadmap sorted for at least the next 2-3 years. Which means all of those changes in the iPhone 7 was not random. Everything was planned as you’ve pointed out. We will just never know until apple releases the future models.

Yes interesting right. I’d love to have their team discuss this in a tell all book. It didn’t make sense back in 2016 but 2017 and now having a notch phone it makes sense.

Do you all think having a 7 and 7 plus with a headphone jack, plus come out with AirPods at the same make any difference in sales?

Multiple Apple executives had stated when they deleted the 3.5 mm Jack, it was necessary to make more internal space for Camera/processor expansions moving forward. And Apple commented how the 3.5 Jack was antiquated and the future is with Bluetooth of course with the AirPods as a gateway.

Well, I miss the jack. Can I live without it? Yeah, but it was nice to be able to use any headphones without a dongle, and not have to carry adapters to allow you to use headphones and charge it at the same time... I get why they ditched it, but other phone makers have small bezels and stuff and still have the jack... I have no interest in BT earphones... just one more thing to have to charge all the time... The convenience of "no cord" is negated by having to have a charging cord and charge them every 3 or 4 hours... LOL

It’s time to move on.. no need for tech from the late 1800’s in a phone

Why not? The UI itself and the way you set up your home screens with static icons and no widgets or ability to lay things out the way you want, is from the late 1800's... LOL

In all seriousness, it's nice to not have to charge headphones, and when you lose a pair, pick up a cheap $20 set and plug them in and go... Granted, you can with a dongle, but I get why people miss the jack. Frankly, I think plug in head sets usually sound better anyway...

I didn’t mean to make this a complaint thread.

It just more about me realizing now that it now makes sense to remove it given where the phone design was moving towards. I think it’s imposs to keep it the folded Oled and thinness.

It's the nature of forums. Most of the members, are fans and loyalists. Apple and Android, Ford vs Chevy, Glock vs Sig... Most people look at brand names the same way they associate with sports teams. They get on some level, emotionally vested in "their team" and so whenever you question or criticize something about the brand, they take it personally and it turns into an argument.

I tend to be the opposite... I think that when companies can shovel whatever they want out the door and consumers lap it up, they get complacent... So it's good to question things and be vocal about them.

I am a massive Ducati fan. My wife and I have had 12 of them in the past 10 years and dropped a stupid amount of money on them... but when they make a bonehead decision or in my opinion, go down the wrong path, I call them out on it. Just because I am a fan of them, doesn't give them a pass when they made a bad call. If anything, it makes it worse because if I wasn't a customer, I wouldn't care. But I am, I have skin in the game, so if they do something that impacts me, I feel like as a customer, I earned the right to speak up about it, right?

I get why they did it, and its not the end of the world to have to go get a $10 dongle off of Amazon, but I still would prefer to have it, like other companies still do, as an option...

As a BMW fan, and car enthusiast i cried a little when the new bmw 3 series will no longer come in a manual transmission for the USA market. It’s a bummer.

Yeah, although I think that today's double clutch gearboxes shift faster than most people can manually shift anyway...

I recently picked up the new Panigale in my avatar... I love the bike, will be putting it on the race track in the spring... love the power and handling, etc... But they did some bonehead things... Like to change the front sprocket, which normally takes 10 minutes... Now it's an hour because you have to remove the sprocket cover, the gear lever and quick-shifter, unbolt the left rearset and the entire rear suspension linkage, etc... Real PITA.... I am sure there is a good argument from Ducati about "mass centralization" and all that, but come on... sprockets need to be changed fairly often from wear, or when you want to gear the bike for a specific track... To make it a 1 hour process is asinine...

Then there are the valve intervals... Dealer wants 2 grand! They have to be checked every 15k miles, which is good, but because the bike has no frame... the motor sorta is the frame, everything bolts to that... you have to almost take the bike into 2 halves to get to the valves... Again, they will make the argument for weight savings and controlling flex for optimal traction at maximum lean angles and all that, but 2 large for a valve check? LOL

Anyway, what were we all arguing about? haha

No clue. Wow really that’s a pretty short maintenance interval but then again bikes are not normally driven the same amount as cars.

Ya man I can’t believe I’m thinking about buying an automatic. Specifically I’m in love with the Alfa Romero Giulia. It has the well established 8 speed auto that’s in tons of cars. Plus it has column mounted aluminum shifter paddles! That’s what won it for me. Aside from the beautiful design.

Well, you can't call yourself a true petrol-head until you have owned an Alfa... haha

They are beautiful... Italians really have a flair for design...

Yeah, bike valve intervals are anywhere from 9k miles to 18k on average... When you have a little motor putting out that kind of power, they have to be maintained more... The new Panigale V4R, cranks out 234hp out of 998cc, in a bike that weights 400lbs. It also revs to like 16k on the tach, so every 15k miles those valves need to be checked...

My wife had a Ninja ZX6R a few years back and it dropped a valve into the cylinder going 80mph down the interstate...shattered the big end of the rod on cylinder 1, which then punched several holes in the motor and puked oil and coolant everywhere... So it's one of those things you have to make sure are in tolerances... Luckily it didn't lock up the motor or transmission and she was able to coast to the side of the road, and her leathers protected her from the hot oil and coolant...

I was going by the new Apple ones that launched with the X, where you got like 4 hours of usage out of them before having to recharge them? My point is that it doesn't get rid of a cord, it just moves it to somewhere else in the process. haha

No idea what the 100% to flat battery life is like on the AirPods. I’ve certainly never had mine go flat in any one listening session and once they are back in the case they are charged again pretty quickly.

Not entirely sure, that was just what I read in a review last year... But my point is that you have to travel with another charging cable and the base, so you still have a cord.

I am not against BT, I would just rather have the option, that's all... I would prefer wired, less likely to lose them, and its one less thing to charge and I can cheaply replace them literally anywhere...

The AirPods charge with the same cable as your phone.

Yah I keep hearing that comment about needing to own an Alfa if your a real car guy. I’m a guy in his 30s so I never knew about Alfa’s aside from top gear. Never remember seeing them in person. But the 50-50 weight distribution that bmw have and the giulia also possesses are what is pushing me to that brand. I’m gonna keep buying 50-50 weigh cars from hear on out.
[doublepost=1542897347][/doublepost]
Huh? AirPods charge in their case.

Ya each time you put an AirPod in its case it starts charging. Then the case you charge like once a week (depending on your use). The case has a lighting hole like your iPhone. The case obviously has a bigger battery. It seems like a simple concept but it’s one of apple’s great products imho in the last 10 years. You don’t think about it. It works great. No pairing un-pairing. It sync all of your Apple devices using iCloud so no need to pair your watch, mac, or iPhone. The audio switches automatically. You can’t even turn it off. It’s a genius product.

Samsung is rumored to be removing the headphone jack on the Galaxy S10 and Note 10 phones so I’d say headphone jack will be a memory in a couple years..

Indeed. Just like how how the Google Pixel no longer includes the 3.5 Jack, others will follow suit. The smart phone industry is really competitive, but it’s interesting how they all tend to make the same changes, just not at the same time.
