Go Halos!!

You know what I would like to see if anyone is savvy, some cool looking Angels (MLB) wallpapers... The one's I've google'd for the iphone are lame.

please let me know about the quality of these if you have a 3gen. I don't yet, so I can't see how they "actually look"

Should I up the resolution to to 1080 or something or would it be the 264 in the apple specs? in my art program it's set at a default of 72.000. (I guess I mean the DPI or PPI?) I haven't really ever made "retina" wallpapers and I'd like them to be on-par with the high quality that can be had with the new Ipad.

Edit: removed links due to poor quality control *shy face*

Dropbox compresses/resizes unless you retrieve/upload from the desktop site.

Also make sure to increase the default dpi of the canvas from 70

Tutorial?

Does anyone have a simple tutorial on how to make lets say an image like the one posted thats a pretty small jpg file into a version that is both 2048 x 2048 and high enough quality to look ideal on the retina display? I would love to be making these myself and am just clueless what steps are needed to achieve this. Thanks in advance!

oh it does? cruddy, my laptop doesn't always have internet, so I'll upload elsewhere.

Also, I upped the dpi ppi whatever to 264, as per spec on apple's site, so let me know if this one looks better:

http://lost-dove.deviantart.com/art/Pop-Art-Ipad-3gen-Wallpaper-292427112 Pop-Art wallpaper (for ace)

http://lost-dove.deviantart.com/art/Fine-art-Retina-Wallpaper-Ipad-3-292428064 Fine art wallpaper (for ace also)

http://lost-dove.deviantart.com/art/Ipad-3-Wallpaper-USC-Trojans-292431884 - USC wallpaper for SCdad. I couldn't get the others to resize without looking all blurry. So I made you this one... It's based off what ever one had the wood/logo if you totally hate it let me know and I'll try again.

I think it uploaded fully.
If someone could check it out on the 3 gen and let me know how it looks, that would be great :3

Edit to add: Wallpapers made from higher res. stock images.

Why does DPI matter?

xD I don't know. that's what I'm trying to figure out. I'm sure it has something to do with the fine crisp, high-resolution details and lack of blurry-ness when at the full size on the ipad, but since I don't have one in hand yet I can't compare the two.

I updated my above post with some images. If you click on the "download" link on Deviantart it'll give you the full sized image. let me know if they're blurry or cruddy or what not (I promise I wont cry)

also, if they look presentable then I'll make more! It's kinda hard to find larger stock images though V which is what sir. Ruben is talking about.

Okay, Ideally you want the original image to be larger than 2048x2048. Then in a photo package chose 'new' and create a blank canvas 2048x2048. From here you can paste the larger image into the blank canvas, shift it about until its the way you like it and then save it at the maximum quality. There can be more to it than that, but thats pretty much the basics.

As for the image you attached, its small and relatively low quality so it would look awful when stretched to fit 2048x2048.

Id say the key to creating a stunning retina quality wallpaper really does boil down to having a very high resolution fine quality image as your starting point. Anything less than this and you would not get the results you want.

Hope that helps.

Just wanted to say thank you to all of those sharing their work. I'll try to make some as well when I get a chance.

I will hopefully have a few new wallpapers to share with you all later today. Need to do some final editing etc but they look promising and should show off the screen.

As far as I was aware DPI only matters if you plan to print that image. If you dont then I dont think it makes a difference to the quality of an iPad wallpaper. However correct me if Im wrong.

EDIT: Ah here we go, found this on the web which sums it up:

The resolution of a photo is expressed in Pixels (w x h)
The resolution of a print is expressed in Pixels per Inch (or DPI)

"PPI/DPI and photoshop

Dpi (actually ppi) is only important in case of printing. When you open a picture in Photoshop a dpi-number is mentioned. Don’t pay attention to it. It doesn’t tell you anything, you can change it in any number you want, it doesn’t change anything of the picture."

If you're working with a pixel based sizing (which we are here) then the DPI makes no difference, the DPI setting in Photoshop is only for creating print works, for example you want something at 5cm by 10cm at 300 DPI

as long as you set your canvas to 2048x2048 pixels then setting the DPI will have no effect on the outcome of the image.

If you set the DPI to 1 then photoshop will think your image is 2048 inches wide, if you set the DPI to 2048, then it will think your image is 1 inch wide, but both will still output an image that is 2048 pixels wide.

To show you how this works, if we put in the dimensions of our canvas as 7.76 inches by 5.81 inches (the size of the iPad's screen), and set our DPI to 264, we would end up with a canvas that is approximately 2048x1536 pixels in size

but we don't need to enter dimensions and DPI to get our pixel size as we already know we need it at 2048x2048, so we just enter that and ignore the rest.

Luke & Sir. Ruben, Thank you so very much for the info :3 The more you know, and all that. It's nice to not have to worry about all that and making sure it's set or what not now. it also helps me in looking for images to use since now I don't have to care about that number.

Great explanation! I'm sorry i posted such a non-helpful post, i should have explained it right away. Great forum, this.

who painted that, do you know? the image itself was kinda small and got all pixel-ey and icky when I enlarged it. :3 I'll give it a shot when I get to work in a bit.
