It seems ridiculous to me that one of the more generic parts (7200 rpm hd) is making a 4-6 week shipping time. I mean, they can handle the LED screens, custom GPU...but they can't get enough hard drives? Seems like such a long time. If I could have it in even say 2 weeks, I think I would order, but this makes me hesitant...I think the waiting game for that long would kill me.

Uhmmm... more generic parts? That hard drive is the rarest computer part on the market right now. It's the Seagate Momentus 7200.2 drive. Try finding it in stock on the web. I've been searching for weeks and eventually settled for a company that CLAIMED to have it in stock but didn't. Luckily I contacted CS and it ended up coming back in stock momentarily and it shipped today.
These things are HARD TO GET. Out of stock all over the web.
so you're saying a hard drive is more rare then a GPU just for the MBP's, or the shipment of LED screens Apple had to get in? Maybe hard for a consumer to order, but I think the company would ramp up production if Apple wanted a bunch...
When Apple custom orders the parts, they're custom ordering them for mass production. The 7200rpm drives are BTO, which means they're either made and then shipped to you or there's a very small number produced. Seagate only recently released the drive and is obviously seeing very limited production.
Ah if only you were king of the world...Not every company in the world jumps as Jobs snaps his fingers.
Also bear in mind, Apple's not the only computer manufacturer utilizing these drives. Who knows, maybe that 4-6 week estimate is exactly that, a generous estimate.
That's all it is. I am hoping that we will see that 4-6 cut in half, but then again, I'm not making those hard drives. I bet it's not really that long. If so, then I'll stick it out. Plus, it gives me peace of mind knowing I ordered mine already, yet I get to wait and see what happens at WWDC.
Maybe I should just order mine...then again I am kinda torn between a mac pro. Meh, my gut feeling is MBP, maybe I should order one.
All I know is that I'll be happy when mine gets here. As much as I would love for that to be sooner, I've been waiting for so long for this update that I can wait a little longer.
I have stuck with the 5400rpm drive for the moment. It can always be changed later if necessary, if I even use my laptops in a way that'd emphasize the difference.
I quite fancy waiting until some decent capacity SSD's are out, though, and going down that road instead

Probably the production lines currently only build the standard machines. Especially now just after launch they keep on producing standard machines to make sure all retailers receive machines as well (to fill the gap).
When the initial 'pressure' is gone they will probably include the BTO's in the project planning as well. I assume they reserve one production line (dedicated or once a week) for building BTO's.
In addition it's also possible they do not have the 7200rpm delivered at the factories yet...
So, while -of course- I'd like to receive my MBP 15" with 7200rpm also as soon as possible, I understand this delay...

It's just bad market timing. The 7200rpm 160GB part was just introduced. You'll find pre-production reviews, but nowhere has them in stock yet. Apple is probably getting early shipments, but the bottom line is that if a part isn't on the market yet, Apple can't do much more than wait.
I doubt Apple was willing to postpone the MBP updates just to wait for the drives to ship, though perhaps they could have added the 160GB/7200rpm option later, when the drives were actually available to consumers.
I "Chatted" with one of the Apple workers on the website. They said 4-6 weeks is a "worst case scenero" I can't spell so kill me But yea, hopefully it's like 1-3 weeks. All I know is I record bands and I need the fastest thing I can get so I am stuck waiting it out. . .

I would be fine upgrading the hard drive later...if it didn't void the warranty.
To give hope, remember that Apple has a habit of understating (e.g., iPod battery on newer gen) when possible. (rev A/B MacBook Pros battery life, obvious exception!) Better to cover the bases and pleasantly surprise the customer. Better to piss people off BEFORE they receive the product than after the fact.
Apple would have done well to keep the 100GB 7200rpm HD they had as a BTO. I would have gone for that as speed is more of an issue that capacity for me.
I'm also a bit bitter about that because you got a small discount if you chose it and now you can't, the 17" works out more expensive for more even though it got a price drop.

I'm betting the 4-6 weeks might be a system glitch in their online store. As possible evidence of this, I noticed on 6/5 in the a.m. that configuring the 17" with the faster drive in the EDU store said "[Add $135]" but didn't actually change the price shown in the right column when choosing that option. They've probably fixed that by now, but it points to a programming error on the site. The 4-6 could just as easily be an error, especially in light of what you just wrote.
To follow up:
I got curious and checked again (regular non-edu store). For the 17" model, adding the 7200rpm drive option no longer changes the shipping estimate. The estimate remains at 1-3 days now. For both 15" models, though, adding that option still stretches the shipping estimate out to 4-6 weeks.

Is this on a 15inch or have you ordered a 17inch ? - i just noticed your profile says you have a 17inch powerbook aswell. (not trying to be insulting)
Would be cool if 4-6 weeks was worst case scenario !! Please could you give us some more details like when did you order it ?
