MBP 17" CTO with 7200rpm to arrive by mon/tues?

I posted this in the "has your MPB shipped" thread before noticing this one (not sure it's frowned upon to post basically the same thing in multiple threads) - just called Apple to ask about the 1-3 day estimate now given when one selects the 7200 on a 17", and was told my 17" MBP (ordered early Wed. morn) should be here by Mon/Tues. Huh? Not sure if I believe it, no change on the Apple order details page yet, should have asked them to email me confirmation. We'll see - will be excellent if true! My config:

17" MBP, 2.4 C2D, 2GB, 160GB@7200rpm, Hi-Res Glossy...

I am located in CT

I'm in UT. I can't get any real answers from Apple so I decided to just wait and see.

I ordered the drive from transintl.com for $199 in stock and ready to ship. At least they're not way over retail price like OWC seems to be.

I hate opening up these MacBook Pros, as it takes a bit of time to get in and out--but a lot less than 4-6 weeks, and cheaper too if I sell the old drive on eBay.

I don't really care to void my warranty though. I actually thought about doing that, then I realized my AppleCare would be worthless.

Also, does anyone else have any word on the 1-3 day thing with the 7200rpm drives? I'm still getting a ship date of July 18th, yet if I were to order today it still shows 1-3 days. Apple hasn't been able to tell me why that is, and I have called them about it 3 times now. I think they are getting sick of hearing from me.

EDIT: Just checked my bank account, I'm down to $190. Woot! Apple has billed me three times in the last week. First I ordered my computer with the free nano, but when I got it I decided I wanted the 80GB iPod. I called and they were nice enough to switch my order, put the new one on the same order, and give me a return number. They were even so kind as to email me a FEDEX label so I wouldn't have to pay to ship this nano back! They billed me for my Applecare and the nano, then shipped the iPod that day. Yesterday they billed me again for the 80GB iPod and shipped it yesterday. So, I'm thinking, they billed me today for the MBP, they shipping it today?! Hope so!

So, I just checked the apple store and a 17" with hi-res display and 7200rpm hard drive: 1-3 days.

If that is the case, I wish my estimated ship date would change...but Apple is probably playing it safe and keeping the longer ship date. Just to keep me going crazy.

I can't help but get a little excited again...

Installing a hard drive will not void your warranty, unless of course you break something yourself while you're in there installing.

I've had two separate issues that needed repair in the last 5 years (an inverter buzz and something else). And neither time was I questioned about my upgraded hard drive.

I've put hard drives in these cases since the early powerbook G4s. It's not that involved, but there are a lot of screws to remove and replace. I can understand people's hesitation of the unknown and false fear of loss of warranty, but if you do it once, you'll see there's no cause for concern.

Good to know! I talked to Apple again today and the guy told me that it even though I am showing a 6 week wait on my status still, they should have it shipped within 48-72 hours. He said if I don't get a confirmation by then, to call back. I pointed out to him that the online store shows a 1-3 day delay. He agreed after looking at the store and called a "colleague" to confirm that the 7200rpm HDD was in stock. After he got back he said they surely are and told me the status should update when they ship it.

My bank is still showing a chrage from Apple, so I think it may even be going out today! He did say they take payment from the bank just before shipping. I'm getting a bit excited!

I am going to order the 15'' Maxed out. Even if the wait is 4-6 weeks. The Faster It is now, the longer it will last.

Oh well here goes the wait. But im sure that it will be worth it.

This is for 17 inch, right? I think I;ve decided to pull the trigger on a 15 inch, even if I do have to wait a while.

Well, no change on my order status and no email confirmation as of yet. :( I'm getting kind bummed that all these people are ordering the same computer I did and have theirs in transit already. I ordered on Tuesday during the 4-6 week trial. Anyone else in my boat with no answers?

I'm sitting and waiting for the 7200s to be available too. I spoke to someone in Apple UK sales today who said if I made an order for with the 7200 drive, they should send a laptop case with it for the wait (er.. ok)..

He also said, that there's a high chance that the 7200's would be available before the 4 weeks (providing I made an order over the phone there and then)... Typical sales..

I just checked my status online. I have the 17" with the 7200 RPM drive. Mine as well says the July shipping time. I checked on my credit card statement and there is a "pending" charge from apple so it must be coming soon! I ordered mine on Tuesday as well.

My 8GB (free +$50) Ipod came yesterday so at least that came quick!

Hahaha...exactly. The US store shows that they are available for the 17" MBP with a ship date that is out 1-3 days. They took $3003 out of my bank account early this morning, which shows that they are gearing towards shipment. Why am I getting all worked up over this? It'll be here soon.

My 4GB Nano came yesterday also, but I re-boxed it and sent it back to Apple today. My $150 80GB black iPod should be here on Monday. At least I have that to look forward to! :D

THIS IS WONDERFUL. I WANT MINE TO COME.

I have the free printer i ordered with my MBP sitting here and it's just itching for a laptop to hang out with it.

Ugh, i wish my shipping date would update or something so I could sleep. Post if your ship date updates, or (for that matter) if you get a notice that your 17" has shipped.

I wonder if apple is holding stock for the 17" regarding the 160GB 7200 rpm disk. I ordered my 17" on the morning of the updated MBP announcement. If you configure a 15" with it, it's 4-6 weeks. Sounds fishy to me...

Is it just me who keeps checking their order status :D

Unfortunately it never changes.

Only like 5 times an hour!

Apple has charged my account twice with transactions that are "in progress." I guess that is a good sign as it will most likely be shipping on Monday (unless they've shipped it already and never gave me any notice, which I doubt).

have any of you guys had an apple authorized service provider replace a hard drive on a macbook pro (that wasn't warranty work)? if so how much did they charge you?

i'm wondering how much it would cost if i were to upgrade my hard drive later on without voiding the warranty.

yes, i could do it myself, but i don't want to take the risk.
