I "Chatted" with one of the Apple workers on the website. They said 4-6 weeks is a "worst case scenero" I can't spell so kill me :p But yea, hopefully it's like 1-3 weeks. All I know is I record bands and I need the fastest thing I can get so I am stuck waiting it out. . . :(

I never had a problem recording 8 tracks at once on my FirePod with a 5400rpm hard drive. I guess if you're moving more than that 7200rpm would definitely be helpful.

hard to get? - hardly

Uhmmm... more generic parts? That hard drive is the rarest computer part on the market right now. It's the Seagate Momentus 7200.2 drive. Try finding it in stock on the web. I've been searching for weeks and eventually settled for a company that CLAIMED to have it in stock but didn't. Luckily I contacted CS and it ended up coming back in stock momentarily and it shipped today.

These things are HARD TO GET. Out of stock all over the web.

Umm... I just ordered one from Other World Computing yesterday and it's on a UPS truck right now for delivery tomorrow. It's been in stock there for weeks as I had been wanting to upgrade the HD in my 2.16 CD MBP but wanted to make sure I wasn't going to upgrade the machine first, which I didn't.

Is this on a 15inch or have you ordered a 17inch ? - i just noticed your profile says you have a 17inch powerbook aswell. (not trying to be insulting)

Would be cool if 4-6 weeks was worst case scenario !! Please could you give us some more details like when did you order it ?

Thanks
David

It seems ridiculous to me that one of the more generic parts (7200 rpm hd) is making a 4-6 week shipping time. I mean, they can handle the LED screens, custom GPU...but they can't get enough hard drives? Seems like such a long time. If I could have it in even say 2 weeks, I think I would order, but this makes me hesitant...I think the waiting game for that long would kill me.

Just a speculation: As has been discussed on this board, a 7200 RPM drive is not necessarily faster than a 5400 RPM drive, especially if the 5400 RPM drive is running at higher data density than the 7200 drive. I have actually posted a link to a site with specs of various drives where the specs show a 7200 RPM drive having a lower data transfer rate than a 5400 RPM drive.

It is quite possible that 7200 RPM drives at the same high density which would actually be faster than 5400 RPM drives are just now at the point of becoming available. So Apple may have had a choice: Ship with a slow 7200 RPM drive right now, which pleases the crowd who wants big numbers, or wait six weeks until they can ship with a drive that is actually _fast_.

Thanks for posting that for us :) But it a 17inch which doesn't seem to be affected like the 15inch. I'm guessing the 7200 drive in the 17inch is a different drive to the one for the 15inch cause of the height difference.

Thanks though

My laptop is evidence against that, I ordered the 17" High Resolution with the 7200 drive and my ship dates:

Ships by: Jul 18
Delivers by: Jul 23

The 7200 drives are back in stock if I may believe the Dutch web-store.

3 days for delivery it says even when selected the 7200 drive.

Note that it's only for the 17'' ones for some reason; if you select the 7200 drive for the 15'' than the delivery date goes to 6 weeks.

Of course, OWC has had them in stock for over a month. They also charge way more than the MSRP. It's amazing how their price keeps going down by the day, though.

You ordered yesterday, most likely at the $233 price. I paid $175 ($1 under MSRP) and have mine today. OWC now has it at the $219.99. $13 drop in one day because the drives are becoming more readily available. Last month OWC wanted $300 for the drive. A week ago it was $240.

If true, not helpful for me, :(. I will be ordering from US store.

Umm, all laptop drives are 2.5", hence they are teh same physical dimensions.

No, 2.5" refers to the platter size, not the physical dimensions of the drive. There are 2.5" server-class drives designed to reduce heat and power consumption that won't be anywhere close to fitting in a laptop.

9.5mm height drives will fit in the MBPs. The 300GB 4200rpm Toshiba moster is 11.5mm (if I remember correctly) and will not.

Most laptop drives, however, are 9.5mm.

Just checked the US online store...

17" MBP with the 160GB 72000rpm HDD and high res. screen is showing a shipping estimate of 1-3 days, both on the regular store page and with the education discount page. My order status is still the same: Ships July 18, delivery July 24. I'm am hoping that it will be updated later tonight with a ship date of June 8. I'm gunna hop on the phone with Apple again. :D

TThat's lucky about teh 17". I hope you do get updated, that would be awesome. Still showing 4-6 weeks for 15 inch though, :(

As I stated above, I called Apple and talked to the nice lady there. She still shows a 4-6 week wait on all 7200 rpm HDDs. It must be a mistake on the website. I guess I may find out tonight if things change, but I've since put myself back into that "waiting" mode.

1-3 days!

Just ordered online; 17" with the HD screen and 7200 R.P.M. drive, estimated ship time 1-3 days. That's more like it!

What does your order status say? I'm still showing July 18th as a ship date. I think I'll be on the phone with Apple again soon.

i'm just curious what y'all who are ordering the 7200 will be using your mbp's for? Is the speed differential exponentially, noticably different? Is this for design or video editing, etc.? or is a 5400 drive sufficient for those tasks?

Both for graphic design and video editing. I heard it is a lot better for video as it can move large chunks of data faster. I figured I'd wait and get the better computer.

but for 180 bucks couldn't one just buy an external 7200 rpm w/ fw800 drive of the same capacity, in effect doubling what you have and picking where to spread it? or i guess maybe some people would prefer it all in one package?

I plan on also getting an extrenal drive. They say the 7200 is faster at bringing up programs (although it may not be much difference anyway) and stuff like that. I figured, I'm spending all this money, why not toss a little more in the pot and get what I really wanted?

I'm pretty sure the only 160GB 7200RPM 2.5" Notebook drive on the market right now is the Seagate Momentus 7200.2 Drive. Fujitsu is making one but it isn't available yet.

Called Apple again. Very apologetic, but all they said was, "it'll ship on or before July 18th and arrive by July 24th." The guy said it may be sooner. I guess only time will tell now. :(

Update for Canada Buyers

The 15" Macbook Pro is the only one with the huge 7200rpm HD Shipping delay, the rest are 1-3 Days.
