Muramasa, I had the same concern, but I think that only applied to the very early models (and more specifically, maybe only to the 21" early models). More recent models seem to have the SSD blade connector on the logic board regardless of configuration. This was the case with R.OG's teardown of a base 27" model.

Quoting R.OG from page 3 who was commenting on his teardown pics on Page 2 of this thread: "Looks like the base 27" has a socket for the blade SSDs."

Zuri, members in this thread have confirmed that they have TRIM working on software RAID 0 arrays using the TRIM enabler hack/mod.

I plan to RAID 0 either a 256GB Samsung 830 + 256GB Apple blade SSD (Samsung 830) - OR - 512GB Samsung 840 (partitioned into 2 x 256GB partitions) + 256GB Apple blade SSD (Samsung 830), leaving the extra 256GB partition for either Windows, or just extra space.

good to know ;)

Awesome job, Zuri. I will definitely reference your video when I install my blade SSD.

Do you recommend for anyone who is removing their logic board to reapply thermal paste to their CPU?

I can only recommend to reapply it.
If you buy really good paste you can decrease temperatures by 10-15 celsius. :)
And make your iMac cooler and quiter :)

Hi guys!
I'm planning to modify another IMac 27".
I have few questions please:
This time I won't go for a 512gb blade + 512gb 840 pro but just 256+256.

Counting that there is just one part number for the Samsung 256gb blade or there is a newest version that I should get?

I read somewhere that since the 256blade is a 830 based is useless to do a raid with a Samsung 840 or 840 pro because the speed of the raid won't change? Is it true? Should I go just for a 256gb Samsung blade + the cheapest 256gb Samsung 830?
(if yes that means I can avoid to waste some money for speed that I will never reach in raid with the 840 versions)

Let me know,
Thanks a lot community! :)

Very nice Video Zuri.
Thank you very much for it!
It helps a lot.
My Tape is coming on monday.

I have a question.

I didn't remove the bottom adhesive tape so the screen is still perfectly adjusted to the casing.
I am planning on letting the bottom tape just stay there and only put on the new side an top strips.
You think that is a "stupid" idea?
Should i replace all of the tape, or will my way work also?
The bottom Tape is still really sticky.

Also one thing i noticed is that i have Light bleeding in the top right corner of the screen that wasn't there before i did the opening.
When i push just with a little force on that corner, the bleeding disappears completely.
I think that it will go away when the adhesive Tape is back there.

I had some backlight bleeding on one of my units too and I did notice that the bleeding would change depending on where I put pressure on the screen, but I'm still not sure there's anything you can do to get rid of the inherent bleeding. I changed screens on mine for this reason.

I don't see how an 840 Pro can *hurt* but you might not see any advantage to the speedier drive in a RAID 0 array coupled with a blade (830) since the array would run at twice the speed of the slower drive. However, if there's not much difference in price, you could always justify getting the newer/faster 840 Pro because if you ever reconfigure your machine down the line and run your OS off the 840 Pro alone, you'll be left with a faster drive (that I'm sure will prove to be just as robust as the reliable 830 in the long run).

I'm in possession of both of those drives right now and I'm debating the same thing as you. Right now I'm leaning towards the 840 Pro but I'll make my final decision once my blade SSD arrives from China.

I think your way that you let the display still on may work but:
I recommend to put down your display because you have better access to all internals.
It is not about the tape and stickiness that bottom tape is very sticky even when you give it away completely. You have to clean it with alcohol.
But it can be quite tricky to put out logic board and all screws while display is still present
You can try it but be sure to hold your iMac in one position and be sure it cant move also put the display on something solid and equally large.

You can give it a shot but I think it will hinder you in process.

About that light bleeding..hm..I dont know I did not observe any light defect while my display was off. Maybe the adhesive and a little pressure it makes fix that but I am not certain in this.
Dont you have broken LED board or connector on the display assembly?

Hi,

Thank you both for the reply.

I wil give it a shot and take of the screen completely.
Both the connectors of the screen are 100% ok.
The only connector i took of was the power cable for the screen.
I only did a SSD Upgrade since i already have the biggest i7 and 680mx.
No need for more power....
I will see the next day's if everything will be ok.
The bleeding isn't that much, but i noticed when i looked a movie and had the black bars up and down the screen.
On a normal day use, it isn't noticeable

can you guys put a stickie or something on the first page to tell people NOT to lift the lower edge of the screen without separating the tape first. Otherwise you'll crack the screen. ask me how I know.

The best way I did it was to, use the pizza slicer on the top, left and right edges and then use a thin flexible card for the lower edge of the screen.

Ouch! What exactly do you mean by lift the lower edge of the screen? Did you try and prize it forward without cutting all the tape first?

Pretty much all 2012 27" iMacs have some bleed, but as you said, not noticeable for the most part.

Does this forum have a marketplace / classifieds section? I saw a mod post about it, but I couldn't find it. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like I can get both of 840 Pros inside my iMac, so I will have to settle for just one. My extra one is brand new in the box, and I kinda wanted to trade it for either a 512 blade SSD that works in the 2012 iMac or sell it to recoup costs. Completely brand new. If there's a section to post this in, let me know. Sorry!

Any update on this? Has anyone tried it?

I emailed them and they're investigating the feasibility of this product. I would contact them on their website and ask for "Drew." If they get enough demand, I think they'll make it.

yep, it seemed like it would come off, but the adhesive is damn strong.

Hi guys, maybe someone could help me here. I accidentally deleted the logical volume group in my 3TB HDD when I swap the 1TB in my iMac 2012. When I installed it internally it tried to fuse with the SSD, I clicked "fix" and it started the fusion process, within seconds I realized my mistake and shut the iMac down right away. When I powered it back on somehow it showed as fused already. I unfused it at that point and ran the commands in terminal from this thread (diskutil cs delete volumegroup command) and that's where the screw up happened. Now the 3TB isn't showing any data. Is there a way to revert the logical volume and possibly restore the original state of the disk? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Thanks, I will contact Drew.

Others should as well. I spoke with several tech guys at OWC right now, and it didn't sound like they aren't going to have something that allows you to use two drives anytime soon. I would assume they are going to be more likely to release a blade ssd that works with the iMac instead.

For those more technically inclined than I, does anyone know if there might be power issues, or any other issues preventing a apple-blade to SATA/Power connector from being developed?

Cheers!

Would love to know this as well. A connector that permits the use of 2x2.5" SSDs in the iMac would be pretty awesome.

An adapter sounds like a great idea but for OWC unless they charge an arm and a leg for the adapter it probably is not a very logical move for them when they rather just sell you the whole blade SSD for a much larger margin of profit.

For all the R&D/testing etc etc they are going to have sell quite a few of them and also the reality is even if a few of us are willing to crack open their iMacs it is not for the faint of heart.

I can see why they did it for the retina macbook because average joe can swap it out but for the iMac its quite abit more mess and risk.
