Hi,

i just upgraded my iMac because the Fusion Drive was not the thing i was expecting.
Two things i didn't like about the Fusion Drive was:
1. It was in sometimes noticeable slow. My previous rMBP with 512GB SSD was real fast, so i noticed it immediately.
2. I still could hear the 1TB WD Drive spinning and is was annoying me.

So i decided to upgrade my iMac.
I took out the 1TB WD Drive and build in an Samsung 840 Pro SSD with 512GB.
I left in the Apple Blade SSD with 128GB (actually 121GB) and i will use it as a bootcamp Partition for Windows 7.
I didn't remove the screen completely, so that the adhesive Tape still holds the screen at the bottom.
After the installation was finished, i started the iMac with CMD-R and did all the things you need to do to get a working system.

Here are some Pictures so you guy's can see how i did it.
Enjoy

Wow, I love that SSD adapter. I noticed the package said Hama. Know where I can get one of those?

3770 not working

Hello guys

I have upgraded my 27 imac with a new i7-3770 and a Samsung 830 512GB.
SSD is working like a charm but I have a problem with processor.

iMac does not start up after replacement, I have only beepy sound when I turn it on and the internal LEDs are signalizing no video card installed which is weird.
Processor is OK. I put it in another machine and its working well.

I have tried it to put in and out three times but its still the same.

When I put original processor inside (i5-3470 3,2GHz) machine starts up and all tests passed. (AHT, ASD, EFI, MRI all of them...)

Any guess what might be problem??? :(

PS: I am going to open it again next wednesday, would you like a video of full tear down inc. processor exchabge?

I must say that i wouldn't buy it anymore cause it is just plain plastic an you can't fix it with 4 screws, just 2.

Yes. i would like to see that.
The important thing that i like to see is how to disconnect the video connector from the logic board.
The power supply cable from the monitor wasn't a problem but i didn't want to destroy the video connector.
I am not sure how to disconnect that cable cause the connector looks kinda strange to me.
That was one of the reasons i didn't completely remove the screen.

Sorry that i can't help you with the processor upgrade.

Cheers

I think I will be ready to post you that in morning. (GMT+1)
If you just want to see that video connector.

I am not going to post video of how to cut the display away from aluminium thou. I had it cuted already and my iMac is in opening "stand by" mode :D But I can provide you with a video with everything after this part. I am still trying to upgrade that processor... See picture, no VHB on the display :) I am going to put the tape as a final step when everything runs fine.

Maybe this will help before I post a video :)

Where on ebay did you get the genuine Apple adhesive tape? I might try this in a couple weeks and would like all accessories before I pull it apart.

Ahh ok, thanks for the info! I picked up a cheap metal one earlier in the week that just arrived today. Basic and cheap, but should do the trick :)

I have just used 2,5' to 3,5' metal case from older OCZ SSD (picture).
Make bigger holes from sides to fit it in iMac casing and magic was done.

SATA cable in new iMac is long enough so you can plug it if you move your SSD a little up or down.

Why oh why do people attach huge photo's to a post, I saved this page on my Desktop, it's freaking 14 MB and not all pictures of your post have loaded, next time use smaller pictures please, we don't all have unlimited internet!

Moderator Note:
Please report any oversized images and we will convert the image tags to TIMG to reduce the image size in the forum post.

You can click on the smaller images to open them up in full size.

@Zuri

Thank you very much for the detailed pictures.
That is the thing i didn't understand with the lock.
Now i can remove the connector without any problem.
Thanks again.

@justperry

Sorry... the 14MB (it is actually 31MB) is indeed a big chunk of the daily internet traffic worldwide.
I will reduce my next pics to a 40x30 size so everybody can see the details... not...

But ok, i get your point.
The next time i will post 640x480 pics with a direct link to a bigger pic

Thankx OllyW for doing the job for me..

You can still post full sized images but please use TIMG image tags.

Glad to hear that :)
I have made you a video how to disconnect it already :)

I am going to make a full tear down video as originally planed thou.

Cheers
Thanks! By the way, besides the tape, SSD, and SSD bracket is there anything else I need to complete the job? I'm just gonna replace the HDD with a 512mb SSD. That's it!

You need the tape, SSD bracket and something to open your iMac.
Best what you can get is display removal wheel (part number 076-1419 – Display Refill Kit, iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) but guitar picks will do the job too.

How hard was it to remove the old tape on the computer and screen?

I'm interested too :D

P.S.: Where can I find the complete illustrated manual you posted?

you want to see full video or just the part with display ?
I can send you manual by message.

with wheel removal tool quite easy.
I didnt try it with guitar picks.

What I meant to say was. How hard was it to remove the sticky residue after you removed the screen?

Just a guitar Pick will do.
You have different guitar picks.
I took the 0.73mm version and that was perfect.
Thicker will give some trouble to get it "inside"
Thinner will not give you enough strength to slide it trough the Tape.

You also need a Torx screwdriver to remove the screws.

Best Regards.
