Will it be easier to replace the HDD in a 27" than in a 21.5"? Is there extra room for an additional drive somewhere? Will OWC find some way to drill an eSATA port into this machine as well?

I would certainly like to see some "teardown" porn featuring this machine, and I imagine that I am not alone. Hopefully, one of these lucky early recipients has a penchant for deconstruction and a camera close by.

Right, until OWC does a teardown and has an upgrade service I have to wait to place my order. It is considerably less hassle (not to mention no shipping cost) to have apple ship directly to them (like OWC has done for the past 2 iMac models). With all the warnings out there I am not even going to THINK about installing an SSD or an eSata by myself.

Even better news, people that want a Fusion drive, but don't want to pay Apple the markup, and are willing to open the iMac, can simply add a blade SSD and the system will try to fuse them automatically.

Does it want to do that automagically and not give you a choice? Wavering to keep the SSD and the HDD separate or not since I do not want it to toss infrequently-used apps on my HDD or some such nonsense.

PS - -MacFoodPoisoner is correct, which idiot at apple thought it was a smart idea to remove the vesa mounting.

Same guys that got rid of the ODD. But most members of this forum started screaming at and insulting those of us that use an ODD. I say, LET THEM EAT CAKE!

Based on R.OC's prior posts, I would say it flags it for automatic merger. He would be able to answer better. My guess is you could still rip them apart with the Terminal.

Great work ROG, thanks heaps for photo's, Ill add some of our trial on monday too haha.

Is that a MERC key i notice sitting there in the background :) Nice,

Looking forward to your pics, i'm sure they will much better than mine. I think it might be time for me to get a new camera.

r.og will there be some sort of instructional step by step video/tutorial that youll be doing on this for all of us such as myself who arent as smart when it comes to this stuff as some of you veterans..I take apart my laptop and upgrade without a problem but ive never done an imac and it would be nice to see in real time so i dont mess anything up....either way your the ****in man! r.og for president

Sorry i don't plan to make a video anytime soon since i've already completed most of my upgrades. What i can do is post an ifixit style teardown once i have some free time. NVRENUF also plans to post some pics/videos when his/her imac arrives tomorrow.

Every other slot starting from the bottom.

Hi There, I was wondering what voltage is the Apple RAM 1.5 or 1.35v

On ordered is a BTO 27" coming with 2x4 GB RAM and I would like to upgrade to either 24 GB by adding 2x8.
Questions are:
1. Would this be possible or do all the SIMMs have too be the same GB?
2. Are 1.5 v and 1.35 compatible in same machine?
3. If the 2x8 GB are compatible would it matter which slots they go in? Every other slot or move the 4 GB next to the other 4 GB then put the two 8 GB together?
4. If I was to jack my machine up to 4x8 GB would the voltage matter 1.5v or 1.35v assuming all 4 were the same voltage.
5. What are the advantages/disadvantages between 1.5 vs 1.35v
6. What are your guys preference for other than :apple: ram (other than price) i.e. manufacturer, specs, retailers etc.

I am purchasing this machine to work with Aperture, Photoshop, and Lightroom so more RAM the merrier.

Thanks for your inputs and Merry Christmas.:D

R.OG you are making a bit of an impression across the web on a few sites! http://arstechnica.com/apple/2012/12/autopsy-shows-27-imac-is-positively-austere-on-the-inside/

I am also looking at buying a base model, or near base model anyway to be upgraded with my own sourced blade ssd. I am just waiting to see how hard it is going to be to get this thing back together again. I am going to have to open the iMac at some point to simply clear the dust out so I might as well get familiar with the procedure from day one.

I was going to ask how come the tape you are putting in is just temporary for now? I can't tell from the pictures but I can't quite see if the screen is sitting flush with the aluminium frame!

The screen is definitely sitting flush against the frame, i'll see if i can get better pictures. I plan to open up the imac very soon to install my 512gb ssd so i only used 4 strips of VHB tape to make it easier to reopen.

----------

I second this motion!

Video of the entire thing, including strip placement etc. That would kick so much buttock/s!

Also, anyone figured out a good place to buy the VHB tape from? I wish Amazon had it. :D

I always purchase VHB tap from Drillspot.com or Ebay. I have an external HD that's been mounted to the bottom of my desk with VHB tape for over 3 years.

Great work R.OG. Absolutely love this topic and the great pics.
It answers a lot of my question about what to do when my 27" finally arrives.

I have opened all of my previous iMacs within days of delivery, so I will probably open this one as well. Even if the FusionDrive lives up to expectations, I just don't like HDD's in my iMac anymore. So a big 2,5" SSD will most likely replace the 1TB HDD very soon after delivery.

Rest of the mods are awesome to follow, keep up the good work.

I manage to get 450/390 out of my external LaCie Rugged Thunderbolt with a 256GB Samsung 840 Pro fitted.

Same here, i keep all my data on a NAS so i don't need a mechanical HD in my imac. The 840 pro speed is definitely impressive but i can't seem to find the 500gb version.

----------

Would like to know that aswell, is GPU upgradeable?

The graphics chip is soldered to the logic board.

Thanks for trying to help, I really appreciate it!

I am aware of the stand, as I'd already researched my options for the 21.5" model. My problem is that I can't lower the mac with this stand as I ll have to keep the foot. The imac already doesn't go as low as I d like it to due to the chin even if it were vesa mountable ( I like to keep my eizo with the fabulous tri stand with the bezel almost touching the desk), with that vesa mod from imacmount you can't lose the foot, so basically you can only get the imac to go even higher....

I am exasperated with apple, really, I am thinking of going with the previous gen imac and getting a macframe after taking off the glass so I can vesa mount it. It's just so disappointing that after waiting and waiting for retina or at least for an imac where they 've taken some steps to treat the glass a la crt's 15 years ago, that they go and eff up so badly with the vesa stand.

Although people had hinted that due to them making it thinner the vesa mounting might have to go due to lack of space... But what can you say about a company who's ceo says with a straight face that he only uses on screen keyboards?

Looks like any iMac is not for you. Get a Mini, but I doubt that will make you happy, so stick with your PC. Your screen name says it all:rolleyes:

how many strips of 3m 4926 vhb tape did you install, and how long were they

I used six 4" strips placed around the frame ( See pic below). I strongly advise against using 3M 4926 VHB tape on the bottom of the glass/frame. The bond is much stronger than the orignal tape, so it will be very difficult to cut if you ever decide to remove the lcd again. I think Apple might have used a weaker tape at the bottom the monitor since it looks different from rest of the tape on the frame.

Fantastic. If I install the strips EXACTLY as you have them, how hard would you say it is to remove them again if needed, down the line?

You remove the tape in a similar manner as the original but you have to apply more force with the plastic pick. The original tape had foam in the middle so it split apart easily. The 3m VHB does not split apart so you have to use the plastic pick to roll it away from the frame.

OK, so I'm wondering if it's better to wait for "better" tape or should I just go for it? :) I'm just very nervous about having to take it apart a second time!

I really want to know what kind of VHB tape OWC is using in their 21.5" memory upgrade kit. I have looked through 3m's entire line of VHB tape and nothing looks similar to what apple is using. If you are nervous i suggest waiting till we find the exact tape to use, hopefully ifixit releases some information on the tape soon. For now you can buy the 3m 4926 tape and practice removing the bond on something else.

R.OG, dude, could you take a shot of vRAM chips the next time you'll disassemble your beauty? would like to know the model and see if it can be OC'ed to 6GHz without any trouble.

And this was in an external Thunderbolt connection, I think internal it would be even quicker.

In The Netherlands it is offered on many websites, but stock seems to be very VERY low with each of them.

I should probably pre-order soon so it will be here when my iMac arrives early January.

I really expect to see some photos from somewhere in the world by sunday of a tear down.

How ever monday when ours arrive.. We will be doing a SSd replacement on both of them.

We will be armed with SLR, GO PRO and will be documenting the whole thing.

Will be sure to post results asap monday afternoon.

Looking forward to this!

R.OG just a quick question regarding the dimensions of the tape. What do you think the ideal width and thickness of the tape is.
I know you mentioned 15mil for the thickness, however do you think anything thicker (0.5mm, 0.8mm, 1mm) would work?
What about the ideal width? 10mm? Between 5mm and 10mm?

Thanks

the tape is skinny I would say 6mm wide.. we have 12mm but it still did ok.

thickness we have 0.5mm its fine no gaps, though 0.4 would have been better.

WD Blue WD10EALX 32MB cache.

What will you do with a 27" screen if you cannot see images?

LOL, no, I can't see the pictures taken of the tear down from this computer, as the site they are hosted on is blocked by our corporate filters. I can see them from home, but was interested as to the drive model. I actually wanted to see how large the cache was... Silly... But I wanted to see if it was going to be quick enough for windows to run off using bootcamp (I ordered mine with fusion) and if not I may get a thunderbolt SSD just for windows for gaming (which might be a waste)!

How about 3M RP16 VHB Tape? 3M double-sided pressure sensitive adhesive gray foam tape for bonding a variety of substrates including many metal, plastic and painted materials. Thickness: 16 mil (0.016 in. / 0.4 mm). 3M website
