epic piece of work edwin - couple of questions, though:

do the installer/mods work on intel and PPC versions of the game ?

can a mod be applied half way through a campaign, or d'you have to start from scratch having installed one ?

thanks !

Thanks it was a bit of a mission :)

Answers are:

Yes PPC and Intel should work fine

Mods can be applied but mods create their own saves as the game data is different. You can have saves for a mod and the full game and they will not interfere or appear in each others load/save lists.

well - installation, loading and faction selection (on RTR) all work fine, as does the gameplay after a fashion, but the "shift,+" key combo to zoom in to the map doesn't, and it's not the easiest thing in the world to see what's going on when you only have "fully zoomed out looking at things from satellite" view - any thoughts ?

This is a mod made by fans so things will be different to the full game.

I can't spend to much time on trouble shooting as this is a mod that is not supported or developed by Feral. That said I checked and zoom in and out work fine using the mousewheel and NumPad + and - which are the the controls for this as specified in the options menu.

I suggest you have a look at the keys in the options menu as the mods will have slightly different keys to the full game and I think your problem is down to pressing the wrong keys.

Edwin

[EDIT] If anyone fixes any issues for example remapping the keys (the mapping files are in the data as a text file) please send me a PM and I will merge them into my next update.

feel free to drop me a pm about issues you find with as much detail as possible. I am taking a rest this weekend but I will see if I can do some editing of the mod to fix Mac issues in a few weekends time.

If you happen to fix them yourself ;) please give me the instructions :)

Added to the "To Do" list.

Actually do you think that i could make EB run on the Barbarian invasion:confused::confused:

Yes you can if you want to. Just use the mod: options in BI instead of Rome. I have not tested it but the Rome 1.5 and BI code is virtually identical.

Edwin

Oh Nos!

Crash in Rome Total Realism. Fortunately there was an autosave immediately before the battle, so I'll just refight.

Never had a crash in RTW, either on PC or Mac.

Dude, you've been the tech business for long enough to know that the above sentence is equivalent to:
- Don't worry, the safety's on.
- Just put some more lighter fluid on it.
- Here's the credit card, use it only for emergencies.

Here's a data point: I started RTW:BI, entered mod: rtrpe in the advance options screen. The game started, then crashed when I hit continue campaign.

I do appreciate getting RTR ported to the Macintosh, and I do appreciate your individual effort in setting up the mods Rome Total Realism and Eurpora Barbarorum, but still. It's frustrations like this that cause people to just throw up their hands and walk away.

Got an update, i have got rtr to completly on BI no bugs, only annoying thing there is no music playing what kind makes there is no atmosphere in the game, honestly though i may have got rtr to work, but i really want to make EB to work on BI but i cant select a campaign or it crashes if i start a custom battle, if you can get it to work in any way please tell ME!!!!:D:D:D

This is a modification of the game so it might have issues, it is not supported and something that I have done in my spare time with Feral's blessing to make it easier to play mods on the Mac. Mods especially early on have problems that are solved by the community (hence most mods are version 1.9 etc) this is the first ever (semi official) Mac release but I hoped the Mac community would take this with two hands and help polish out any issues some users might have.

Mac users might not be used to Mods but by their very nature they are not guaranteed to be tested or stable on their machine. I am still willing to try and help improve and get more mods working on the Mac but please understand Mods are not part of the retail game, they might have issues and they are only successful with community support. I am only one person so anything Mac Rome modders can do to solve problems and make it easier for other users is really appreciated not just by me but all other Mac Rome players.

Just wondering but do you have any reason why you cannot use Rome instead of BI?

I few ideas that spring to mind include, deleting all your preferences, maybe deleting your saved game information inside the mod folder on the data image. FYI, Mod save game information is saved inside the mod folder not in your preferences folder. Finally make sure your mod: Case spelling matches the case used on the data image again should not make a difference but worth trying.

Thanks for the reply! I did say that I appreciate your efforts, and I still do. Also, I'm the guy who called you "the best person in the universe" so your blood, sweat, and tears on this issue are much appreciated.

I'll put in some effort to track down the cause of the crash - would this be something I report to the RTR group? I tried to do that but couldn't figure out how to contact them - their forum/website is a mess.

What happened before the crash is that I attacked Tarentum and "maintained seige" as I needed to build some rams. So I end my turn and the Greek garrison from Croton pops over to attack me during the Greek turn. This calls out the Tarentum garrison into the field, which makes me happy as those phalanxes are easier to kill out in the open. So I know if I kill all of the enemy, I'll be able to take Tarentum a turn earlier and with lower losses.

So I spend some time (1/2 hour?) carefully flanking the Greek phalanxes, breaking their will, and spilling their blood. The battle ends, and up pops the Occupy/Enslave/Raze option. I pick Occupy, and the game crashes.

So I load the autosave and do the same, and the outcome is the same - I kill everyone, select Occupy, and watch the game crash.

I'm guessing the RTR logic doesn't handle the "win a field battle and get a city" logic correctly.

Thanks again for the RTW port and the RTR and EB mods.

I might be wrong but I am pretty sure the the last time I was in that area the AI code for Mac Rome and BI is identical. But I will try and check. :)

Thanks for the kind words, people helping and being friendly really helps spur me on to do more modding stuff. Your extra description is brilliant and just want I needed to help work out the problems. For the others reading this thread the descriptions of what you tried and how it crashes in PatrickCocoa's post is a great example of a good bug report.

If you PM me I will ping you my email and we can organise you sending me a save game of the battle so I can see what I can do as I have access to a debug version.

Thanks again for the time you put in your work has made it much easier for me to know what area of the game logic is failing. I will check my inbox tomorrow but for now I need sleep :)

I had a similar crash before. I think after one of the updates it was fixed.

Good point you should always be running the latest version of Rome TW. In this case the latest version of Rome and BI is 1.1.1.

Success!

For the others reading this thread the descriptions of what you tried and how it crashes in PatrickCocoa's post is a great example of a good bug report.

I used to work in client support for a software vendor. If you're filing a bug report, pretend you're talking to a bomb-disposal guy over the phone and you're walking him/her through EXACTLY what to do. "Did I say clip the RED wire? I meant the BLUE wire. (pause). Hello? Hello?"

Anyway, I reloaded the game and changed two things and the turn completed successfully. What I did was to 1) allow a few hundred Greeks to flee the battlefield rather than killing almost all out of about 1,000 of them; and 2) select Enslave instead of Occupy.

I was worried that the couple hundred Greeks I let live would go occupy Tarrentum and I'd have to besiege it, but they just evaporated. Since the battle took place right next to Tarrentum on the strategic map, the game offered me the Occupy/Enslave/Raze option. This time (as mentioned above), I picked Enslave and the turn completed.

Of course, this violates the change-one-thing-and-see-if-that-fixes-it rule of debugging, but I wanted to move on with the game.

......but I wanted to move on with the game.

"Problem has workaround" best news I could have right now as freeing up programmer resources to fix unsupported mod issues right now is unlikely as we have a bunch of new games in the pipeline that is taking up all their time. :)

Have noted the issue though just in case someone else in the Mac modding community has a similar issue.

Thanks again!

Edwin
