And tea Biscuits?

I would say coffee is the most popular although we do have tea drinkers of all kinds from Earl Grey through to Green Tea. Coke is also sometimes drunk, so all in all a mixed diet of caffeinated products.

Biscuits are always popular as well. :)

RTW for MAC PPC's - Siege Problems

Hello all,

Just wondering if I'm the only person playing RTW on an old G5?

I'm loving the game but wondered if anyone is having the same problems with the siege weapons. I am having no luck at all with putting them against the walls as there is no cursor change, and my catapults don't feel like hitting the gates.

You can only attack cities for so long with a ram!!

Would like to know that I'm not the only one with an ancient mac.

Sorry if this is not the right place to post

I think one of a small handful of PPC players who are playing, I am glad you are after the couple of months of work we spent on the PPC support it's great to hear about someone playing on a G5 or G4:)

The siege towers is an issue but you can usually get them to work but its tricky it involves changing the camera angle and trying to catch the moment that the icon changes.

Catapults work fine here as do Rams (as long as you don't drop them). We don't have a patch planned in the short term but we do plan to release maintenance patches over time and we will see if we can fix the problem with siege towers on PPC for the next patch.

Cheers,

Edwin

Thats great news!

I know I will have to upgrade at some time, but I really appreciate you guys working on getting this version out.

I will be trying out your suggestions as soon as I get home. (no I wouldn't dream of trawling forums in my work place....I'm at a ... friends house).

I still think the catapults only target soldiers, but will perceiver.

Cheers.

(if only RTW had ninja pole vaulters!)

I still think the catapults only target soldiers, but will perceiver.

I know they destroy gates in fact I use them as my main method when playing the game. The normal catapult is pretty inaccurate but will get there in the end. If you use the upgraded catapults they are much more accurate and destroy walls and gates quicker.

i have the same issue with siege weapons - what camera angle do i need to change to in order to see the "flaming tower" icon to be able to attack with towers or onagers, please ?

there's also appears to be an issue with adding crew to siege weapons that have had the original herberts killed (or changing crews during deployment) - there's no working "mouse over unit changes to a hand icon" facility that i can see so replacement troops can "pick up" an abandoned weapon - once the first crew are killed, the ram or whatever becomes entirely redundant....

oh - this also applies to sapping points - never have been able to use them !

pity - otherwise brilliant game, but these flaws (obviously i'm aware that it may be operator error !) make the sieges a real pain in the arse !

We know about all of these issues and they have all been reproduced by our support team in some way however fixing them on the PPC version is not the easiest task in fact getting Rome on PPC was decidedly tricky! We are collecting information on what machines and OS people to try and help with finding a reliable solution that does not have unwanted side effects.

The easiest (most likely to win) way of having sieges even without this issue is using projectile weapons from long range or have a second army and give them all the siege weaponry the AI will use them perfectly. Not a fix but it is something you can do now to make sieges a lot more fun.

thanks Edwin - appreciate the quick response

I take it that getting a second army involved as you suggest is done in the same was as with fleets of ships or standard units - place the second army, suitably tooled up with siege equipment, against the city walls, then instigate the attack with another army under player control ???

Correct!

In other news I have been working away on making the most popular two mods for Rome Total War work on the Mac. I have "Europa Barbarorum" and "Rome Total Realism" working on my Mac and plan on releasing Mac installer scripts for both mods along with a "unplayable factions" enabler.

As all of this is not *officially* supported and is more of a fan effort by Feral employees I can't give an official date but running mods should get easier very soon.

Other Licenses

Now that we have RTW from Feral, has Creative given positive feedback for other licenses?

I assume that is a sneaky way of asking if other Total War games will come to the Mac :)

We have a forum policy of never saying Yes or No on any questions about future games. Other questions I can answer but the one topic that is always out of bounds is questions about what games Feral might do in the future. Suggestions are fine but anything else I will have to give you the boring answer.

Not trying to be sneaky... Thinking that if CA has been pleased with your efforts to port RTW to the Mac, talks may have started for other parts of that franchise and announcements could be made. There is still STW, MTW, M2TW, ETW and NTW to get your hands on. Next year even S2TW

:) It's OK just wanted to let you know we can't answer questions on that topic.

I can say Rome has been very well received by the Mac community and has been one of our most popular titles of 2010 and that's all I will (and can) say on the subject.

Cheers!

Great news! RTW is a great game with a lot of depth and excellent continued playability, but it's great to play these mods.

On another topic, it's OK with me when you decide that the PPC patch is too time consuming and you drop it. It's already cost you guys way more than it will bring in, and the next time there's some unexpected delay I'd encourage you to kill it and move on.

Final testing is just completing now, in fact I just returned to my desk from one of the QA machines testing the installers.

Upload of all the data will take about 7 hours and we leave work in under 6 hours so it might not be until tomorrow.

The initial batch of mods available will be:

  • ModEnabler (This makes your data image read/write allowing you to install Mods and use the level editor)
  • Rome Total Realism - Installs the 1.9 Platinum Edition
  • Non Playable Factions - Enables the Factions that were designed to be AI only allowing the user to play as them. Some text/descriptions will be missing on these factions. (This is not the same as the Unlock All Factions option in the retail game).
  • Europa Barbarorum - Installs the latest 1.2 version (with all hot fixes).

All of these mods are installed using the ModEnabler script which comes with full video guides on what to do, making it (I hope) a painless process.

I am open to making more scripts of popular mods although it is a lot easier for me to add support for mods that support the mod:switch command. If people do have suggestions, download links for the PC mod and a link to the original modders (so I can let them know about a Mac version) will make it easier and faster for me to get them converted.

I plan on posting some information on the Feral Facebook page about the mods first so I can get a few people testing it before we let everyone know on our website etc.

If you would like the earliest access please check out Feral's Facebook page in the discussion area you will find a discussion on modding I will be posting test links to all the Mac mods there first.

P.S. I am using the Facebook page as the initial test area because it is admin'd by Feral making it easier to update when trying out new things like this mod. Once the links have been tested by more people than just the Feral office I will post links in this thread as well. I just want to make sure the mod installers are rock solid before posting links everywhere :)

No you don't need an account to view the page but you cannot post comments in the discussion without logging in first. ETA has gotten better as the upload is going quicker, within the hour maybe!

The mod installer, EB Mod, NonPlayable Factions and Total Realism Mod are all now available to download.

The installer is one link from the Feral site, we also have links on the Feral site for Mac ready images of EB and TotalRealism data which the installer will use.

Read up on how to install the mods etc here

Cheers!

epic piece of work edwin - couple of questions, though:

do the installer/mods work on intel and PPC versions of the game ?

can a mod be applied half way through a campaign, or d'you have to start from scratch having installed one ?

thanks !
