Nope, iSR can operate in Watch-only mode. You can leave the phone at home, provided you have a S2 or S3 with GPS. I'm not sure if the S0/S1 can work in Watch-only mode outdoors using the pedometer to estimate distance.
I just bought it, but don't see the option to install the app onto my watch through the iPhone's watch app. I'm using a Series 2 on Watch OS 3. My phone is on iOS 10. Maybe the app requires Watch OS 4 and iOS 11 (though the app store description indicates that it is compatible with iOS 9.)

Perhaps a restart of the phone and the watch will fix it

That's what I had hoped. But so far, no luck. I've rebooted twice, and I also deleted and reinstalled twice. The app shows up on the phone, but not in the phone's watch-management app. Frustrating, because I did use the app on my phone, and it worked GREAT in exporting to Nike+.

I've sent the developer a message; hopefully they will be able to assist.

Just a follow up on my last post. I ran with the new Nike Run Club app this morning & it was back to how it used to be. I'm not sure if it was the update to the app, or the update to watch os 4.2, or the combination, but the NRC app worked great again this morning.

If you liked the app before the version they launched alongside watch os 4.0 (I think ti was 5.9), then you'll like 5.11. Everything was faster (it still took about 4-5 seconds to start the run from the time I hit the start button, but I've always had that happen, so I'm ok with it), even the quarter mile status updates. And when I stopped the run, and saved it, it saved the data, no issues, no crashes. And this was while running the music app at the same time. As long as it continues to work like this, I'll go back to using the Nike Run Club app full time.

If you weren't a fan of the Nike app beforehand, there's nothing here that will make you like it, but if you enjoyed it before the recent version jacked it all up, it's worth giving it a shot again.

Hope your experience is widespread, and the app is indeed stable again.

I was just coming in here to complain and look for a new app recommendation, but now I see the update you're talking about. Will give it a shot this weekend, thanks.

Unfortunately I have to disagree. I gave new version of NRC a shot and it crashed twice - right after stopping a run and relaunching the app. Moreover, it still doesn't update avg pace - I needed to pause the run and resume to refresh the pace. Also, pausing and resuming takes ages comparing to the Workouts app.

Interesting. You’re using watch os 4.2 and Nike run club 5.11? Pausing worked great for me, though I didn’t try to resume a run. And average pace was working for me as well. I hope that today’s run wasn’t an anomaly. It was great to have the watch working liike it should have again.

Unfortunately Apple was not generous enough to give us a simple option to check Apple Watch App version, but I guess it was the 5.11, since I had new audio guided trainings.

And I wasn't going easy on NRC during the run - pauses, changing playlist in Music, etc. But now I'm comparing NRC to the Workouts which handles this fine.

Apple should've given the Workouts app to the Nike for small rebrand to make it as smooth and native as possible, since it's the only 3rd party app that has special privileges from them.

A quick follow-up on my initial hiccup with iSmoothRun. I couldn't get the watch version of the app to install, so I contacted the developer, who answered that it does indeed require Watch OS 4.

The watch app will match the phone app, so you can check the version on your phone (your initials in the upper left of the main screen, then Settings, then About This Version). They seem to release updated audio runs within the same version of the app, so it may not yet be on 5.11. I'd definitely give it a check & upgrade it manually if it hasn't already updated. The difference between the two versions was night & day for me.

Updated to 4.2 on AW, watch has become noticeably faster, especially Music app. Tried a run with NRC(app is also faster or maybe 4.2 is making a difference?), finished run without problems, unfortunately avg is stuck until I pause the run.

Just one more quick update with regards to the Nike App. I ran both yesterday & today, so three runs total with Watch os 4.2/Nike Run club 5.11 & so far all three have been perfect, with no issues. I'll post back here if I run into any issues, but if not, I consider it fixed & back to how it worked for me prior to watch os 4.0.

mk,

can you describe your set-up? Which AW and iPhone are you using?

Also, when you run, are you using the AW by itself, or AW+iPhone? Additionally, if you're on AW+iPhone, do you start your run using the AW or the iPhone? Lastly, do you use the AW's built in HR sensor, or a BT HR sensor?

Thanks.

I use a Series 2 Nike edition 38mm watch. I have it synced to an iPhone 7, although I never use my phone when I run.

Runs are done using the watch & AirPods only. I record my HR using the Built in sensor, distance & location using the internal Watch GPS & play music (stored on the watch) to a pair of AirPods.

The distances are spot on and I'm assuming the HR readings are too, though I never monitored my HR prior to using the watch, so I have nothing to compare it against. They do seem like they're in the normal range ^ they have been pretty consistent for the time that I've been using the watch.

Just an update on the Nike App since I said I’d post if I had any issues. V 5.11.2 which they just released seems to have re-introduced the issues that v 5.11.0 solved. I ran with it two days ago and it crashed when I saved the run (although the run waasn’t lost). I RN with it again yesterday and noticed that I hadn’t received any notifications. When I checked, at some point the app crashed and it wasbn’t recording the run (I know it started because I watched the countdown and the beginning of the run).

Today, I am back to using the workouts app.

Sorry to hear that Nike can't get their crap together. But it's not unexpected at all.

At this point, Nike should work with Apple to "re-brand" the stock workout app. Just let the stock app populate the Nike servers. Basically like what RunGap does, but do it automatically. The Nike+ run could even be a different Workout Type card in the stock app.

Why doesn't Nike hire me (or at least keep me on retainer) to solve their problems for them????

The new version (5.11.2) also has completely stopped saving the GPS route map. Now all I get is that weird looking starburst thing each time I complete a run. It's ridiculous that Apple continues to sell a $400 watch branded as "Nike+" when the Nike functionality just doesn't work as advertised.

Why are you struggling with Nike? You have so many perfect workout/running apps that work way better. I have tested Nike app one time, enough to delete it.

Mainly because I've used the Nike System for 12 years, and the Nike App was the best running app when I got my Apple Watch Series 2. I ran with it, problem-free, for about 10 months, until they released version 5.9. Since then, I keep hoping it will go back to how it was & I keep trying every new release to see.

I get why many people don't like it, but for me, Nike Run Club version 5.8.x on the Apple Watch was the perfect running app.

I know I'm just punishing myself at this point. But I've been using Nike+ since 2006, and have logged 27,000 miles with it. I keep hoping it will be fixed. That, plus I bought the Nike+ branded watch, and I expect what I paid for to work as advertised.

I did buy iSmoothRun, which is rock-solid. But I don't care for the interface. My eyesight isn't the best, and the NRC interface is so easy for me to read.

You weren’t around when NikeRunClub was super sweet. Her name was Nike Running at the time. She was the greatest. Treated you nicely. Listened to you. It was the greatest relationship ever.

Then she changed. It started with her website. She didn’t care anymore about it. But we looked past that because she was still sweet and nice, and besides, I didn’t need that great website anyways. Nike Running has all of the essentials that I needed.

Next, she changed her name to NRC. Wow! We thought that it was gonna be exciting, but small problems started popping up. She wouldn’t save runs correctly. She wouldn’t play nicely with the new AW that we all bought. And it got worse. She started crashing ... a lot.

Many of us left her. Some are still with her, hoping that someday she’ll remember all of the good times and great runs we had. Maybe she’ll change her name back to Nike Running.

We can only hope ... and wait.

Fantastic summary of how I think many of us feel!

I still have the old Nike Running app installed on an iPhone 4 that I now use as a poor man's Apple TV. Once in a while, I open the app, admire the elegant design, and remember the good times.

Oh dear God. I ran today with the newest update on AW.
Crashes - 1 during the run, 4 or 5 after run.
Seconds change is clunky, lags for 2-3 seconds, pauses are now also slow, you need to wait few seconds to pause.
Often times when run was paused there was no stats, only 2 buttons.
That's it, I'm done with this app. I even installed RunGap 2 weeks ago, but they released this decent update, so I didn't migrate. But today I wanted to, but RunGap doesn't support exporting to Nike...

completely agree! Version 5.11.0 was good enough that I went back to using the Nike app. Version 5.11.2 is rubbish. It’s like the only purpose of the update was to remove all of the fixes they put into version 5.11.0. The new version is terrible. I’m back to using the workouts app.
